Chapter 347 The Unfavored Son-in-law Meets Grandma
Kenny glanced at Thalassa, clearly restless.
The sun seemed to favor his beloved, casting a glow on her face that made her look even more radiant than the diamonds she held.
His gaze finally swept over Thalassa's lips.
Without a trace of emotion, Kenny withdrew his eyes, fingertips absently tapping on the steering wheel.
Kenny hadn't had the chance to act on last night’s thoughts about kissing her again today.
"You seem nervous," Thalassa observed, teasingly looking at Kenny while placing the diamond brooch inside a velvet box and slipping it into her pocket.
"Yeah. I'm worried Grandma might not like me." Kenny played up his concern.
Thalassa tried to reassure him. "That's not possible. Didn't you introduce yourself to her last time? She seemed quite pleased with you."
"But I'm younger than you." Kenny continued to feign a lack of confidence.
"Grandma was a progressive educator. It doesn’t matter that you’re younger. Even if you were a girl, she wouldn’t mind at all," Thalassa said, her fingers roughly ruffling through Kenny's hair.
"Don’t worry. Plus, you have me to back you up."
That made Kenny's smile even brighter.
Thalassa thought, ‘why can't it always be like this with Kenny? Just a simple ruffle of the hair, and he's shining with joy. He’s adorable.’
Thalassa and Kenny left the house, avoiding the morning rush.
Soon, they arrived at the hospital where Grandma Carey was staying.
She had nearly fully recovered and would be discharged in a few days.
Grandma Carey had told Thalassa not to come at first. She knew that Thalassa had just returned to the country and would be busy, and she didn't want her to neglect work because of her. They could always celebrate her birthday later.
But Thalassa insisted on celebrating on the actual date of her birthday, saying it wouldn’t mean the same afterward.
Grandma Carey couldn’t talk Thalassa out of it. She considered checking out early but was firmly dissuaded.
When Thalassa and Kenny arrived, Grandma Carey had been waiting for them eagerly.
Thalassa asked Kenny to wait at the door while she entered the hospital room with flowers and a cake in hand.
"Happy birthday, Grandma!" Thalassa exclaimed.
Grandma Carey smiled so wide her mouth could barely close, but she still playfully scolded, "You should have just come to spend time with me. Why did you buy all those things?"
Grandma Carey had always been a romantic.
When she saw the flowers, her delight was evident and impossible to hide.
"Gifts are always welcome," Thalassa said as she arranged the flowers and glanced outside the door before sitting down next to Grandma Carey. "But my gift isn't flowers or cake. Grandma, there's someone I'd like you to meet."
Grandma Carey shot a look at Thalassa, her cheeks flushed with a shy grin. She immediately said, "Sure thing, where is he? Is he here?"
"Just a sec."
Thalassa stood up, her footsteps echoing as she dashed out. Spotting Kenny leaning against the wall, her smile blossomed instantly.
Kenny caught on to her sudden joy and mirrored her smile, asking in a hushed tone, "What's up?"
Thalassa reached out and took Kenny's hand. Their fingers intertwined effortlessly.
Kenny gripped her hand in return, his reaction seamless.
"It's time to give grandma my gift," Thalassa said, leading him toward the hospital room.
All of Thalassa's attention was on Kenny; she noticed nothing else.
Chris, dressed sharply and holding a bouquet of flowers, stood at the end of the corridor by the elevators, witnessing the entire scene. He saw Thalassa walk out of the hospital room, stride over to Kenny, and look up at him with a radiant smile. She reached out for Kenny's hand, and together they walked back into the room.
Chris remained there, feeling the warmth drain from his body inch by inch.
He remembered...
Thalassa had never smiled at him like that. It was completely relaxed and free of any other sentiment—just a carefree, unburdened laugh.
Inside the hospital room, Grandma Carey eyed the tall, handsome, and affable Kenny next to Thalassa.
"Ah, you must be Mr. Walker." she said.
Kenny had taken the initiative to visit the hospital room and introduce himself thoroughly, even detailing his family background. Grandma Carey remembered it vividly.
She had known then that this young man had his sights set on her granddaughter. But back then, Thalassa seemed completely indifferent.
Who would've thought that it wouldn't take long for them to start dating?
"Yes, Grandma, my name's Kenny. Just Kenny is fine," he replied, graciously and respectfully.
Grandma Carey beamed at them then turned to Thalassa, "You're a few years older than him, aren't you?"
"Mmhmm," Thalassa nodded. "But Kenny is mature in his thoughts and actions. I don’t really feel the age gap!"
Grandma Carey's eyes crinkled into a smile. "He's mature, and he may be younger, but if you're in love, then love well. Just don't go bullying him, you hear?"
"You're playing favorites already, Grandma?" Thalassa chuckled with a playful grumble. "And just for the record, we're not dating or anything."
"Oh?" Grandma Carey exclaimed in surprise.
With a beaming smile, Thalassa pulled out two marriage certificates from her bag and handed them to Grandma Carey. "Actually, we're legally hitched."
A wave of shock passed over Grandma Carey as she eagerly took the certificates, opening them for inspection
She glanced back and forth between the certificates and the couple in front of her several times, as if confirming the reality of what she was seeing.
"A whirlwind wedding, huh?" she summarized.
"Yes, but don’t worry, Grandma. I cherish your granddaughter with all my heart," Kenny assured her with solemn sincerity.
Grandma Carey turned her gaze to Kenny then back to Thalassa with a more serious look. "This isn't like you, Thalassa. You’re not usually impulsive. What's really going on?"
"It's fate," Thalassa said earnestly. "I just felt it was time to settle down, and then Kenny showed up. He was so genuine. I just knew he was the one."
Grandma Carey's heart clenched with a pang of sadness. The date on the marriage certificate was when she and Maria had their falling out. Her eyes started to well up with tears she fought to keep at bay.
"Grandma..." Thalassa moved closer, concerned.
She had assumed her grandmother's progressive attitude would ease the surprise of the sudden marriage, especially considering Kenny's evident worth. But to her dismay...
"I should have been there for you," Grandma Carey said, taking Thalassa's hand with teary eyes. "I shouldn't have let your mother take you away to start a new life and let you endure so much hardship."
Thalassa embraced her grandmother, gently patting her back, then whispered, "Don't be sad, Grandma. Kenny is really, really good to me, I won't have to face those hardships anymore."
Grandma Carey looked up, her gaze drifting to where Kenny stood with a gentle smile. She nodded in response to his warmth and hugged Thalassa tightly, echoing her whispered assurance. "Even if there are hardships, Thalassa, don't be afraid. You can always come back to your grandma."
