Chapter 538 Excessively Clingy
His voice was choked up and his eyes shimmered with unshed tears.
Fiona couldn't help but feel a bit helpless, yet she nodded in agreement.
In the next second, Darwin wrapped his arms tightly around her.
Fiona hesitated briefly before gently embracing him back. "Darwin, let's make sure we have a good life ahead of us."
This time, she didn't lay out a list of conditions like she had before.
There was no point of saying so much.
What was meant to happen, had happened.
Darwin nodded vigorously, burying his head in the crook of Fiona's neck.
"I won't let you down again," Darwin said, his voice choked with emotion.
"Mr. Darwin, you're a grown man, are we really going to cry about this?" Fiona said, patting his back reassuringly.
"It's just—I'm so happy," Darwin paused, then added with a touch of hurt in his voice, "I was really scared you'd never forgive me, that you'd be cold to me for the rest of our lives."
"Being cold to someone you live with day in and day out, that would make life pretty miserable..." Fiona said with a sense of resignation, "Darwin, there are some things I can never forgive, I just... I want to move forward with you."
Darwin tightened his arms, burying his head even deeper.
"I'm sorry..." He had so many apologies to make.
"It's okay," Fiona said, patting him. "you're hugging me so tightly I can hardly breathe."
At her words, Darwin immediately relaxed his grip but held on to her nonetheless.
"Are you okay now?" Fiona continued, "If you're fine, I'm going down to enjoy some barbecue and fruit tea. It's been such a tiring day..."
"Just wait a bit longer, those lovebirds are probably up to something sweet." Darwin looked up, and then planted a kiss on Fiona. "Let's revel in our own little world for a moment."
"Stop thinking about certain things, I have to get up early tomorrow," Fiona said, her palm resting on Darwin's cheek.
"What things? What are you referring to?" Darwin asked with a sly grin.
Fiona just looked at him speechlessly, then pulled him closer by the collar. "Of course, I mean what we didn't get to finish in the wine cellar because of your hesitation."
Darwin had meant to tease Fiona a bit.
However, she turned out to be too formidable an opponent.
With one move, she had him under control.
He resigned himself to burying his face in her neck again.
After kissing behind her ear, he whispered, "If I had to choose again, I still wouldn't want that day to happen. Honey, to me, you are the most important, children included."
His voice was soft and serious.
Fiona believed him; she felt in her heart that his words were genuine.
She raised her hand and caressed his head, "I know."
Fiona had had a hectic day — looking for someone, arranging locations, setting up video equipment, and decorating the venue.
She was truly exhausted.
When she returned to her sanctuary, fatigue swept over her like a wave.
As tempting as the barbecue smelled and as refreshing as the fruit tea sounded, she should be enjoying her contentment. It was all Darwin's fault for being so clingy.
Fiona struggled to get up and took a shower. She had wanted to stay awake until her hair was dry but couldn't make it. After seeing she had fallen asleep, Darwin quietly brought over the hairdryer, turned on a gentle warm setting, and carefully dried her hair for her. Then, he lay back down beside her, pulling her close.
Kissing her tenderly, he eventually fell asleep, content and satisfied.
The next morning, Fiona woke up first. She stirred in Darwin's arms, and he woke up instantly.
"What time is it?"
Fiona's hand was still resting on Darwin's waist when he checked his phone for the time. He returned it without looking away from her, planted a couple of kisses on her, and then replied, "Half-past seven."
"Charles should be up," Fiona said, patting Darwin. "Go check on him."
"Alright," Darwin agreed. "You get some more sleep. I'll wake you when breakfast is ready."
Fiona nodded her head.
Darwin showered her with a flurry of kisses before getting out of bed, energized. Fiona caught herself smiling as she listened to him hum a tuneless song.
Stepping cheerfully, Darwin entered the children's room. Not only was Charles awake, but it seemed like Chicago was up at that hour, sitting in bed with messed-up hair and a bewildered look.
"Morning, pumpkin," Darwin greeted as he tousled her hair.
"Where's Mommy?" Chicago immediately asked about her mother.
"Mommy's still sleeping. Let me tell Chicago." Darwin couldn't wait to share the news. "Mommy forgave Daddy."
Chicago's eyes lit up. "Really? Did you guys kiss?"
With adorable curiosity, she kissed her own fingers.
Darwin nodded proudly.
"Embarrassing!" Chicago giggled and playfully shrank away.
Downstairs, Charles was already talking with the family doctor, who visited every morning to check on his post-bone marrow transplant recovery.
As Darwin carried Chicago downstairs, the doctor was asking Charles about how he felt yesterday and looking for any signs of complications.
Charles, spotting his dad and sister coming down, spoke up somewhat resignedly, "You've got to let her walk on her own."
"Just this once," Darwin responded immediately.
"I'm telling, this isn't the first time," Janna chimed in from where she was reading the news, mercilessly exposing the truth.
"Oh, Grandma..."
"Grandma!"
Both voices, one exasperated and one playfully fierce, rang out.
Even the family doctor couldn't help but laugh.
"Mr. Darwin, Charles’s condition remains stable," they confirmed with a smile.
"That's good, thank you for your efforts," Darwin said with the same aloof disposition of Mr. Darwin he exhibited around others.
The family doctor finished his duties and left.
Shortly afterward.
Charles also learned that Darwin and Fiona had made amends.
Naturally, it was Darwin who had told him.
"This is your last chance," Charles said coldly. "Cherish it well."
Darwin immediately assured, "I definitely will!"
At that moment.
Carey emerged from the kitchen.
She wasn't comfortable doing much with the staff around.
After preparing Thalassa's favorite cream of wheat, she immediately came out.
Meanwhile, Kenny had come downstairs.
"Grandma."
"Kenny, you're up?" Carey greeted him with a warm smile.
"I have to go to work soon," Kenny replied politely. "Thalassa probably won't get up until after eight; she went to bed late last night."
"You know I wouldn't blame her," Carey fondly remarked on Kenny's protective instincts toward Thalassa.
Kenny, Darwin, and Janna each had to head to their respective offices.
Charles and Chicago also had plans to go to Solomon.
So, they all had breakfast together.
Just before heading out, Darwin went up to speak to Fiona.
"Honey, I'm taking the kids to work," Darwin whispered close to Fiona's ear. "Breakfast's ready. Get up and eat whenever you've had enough sleep."
"Mhm," Fiona responded. "I'll join you for lunch after I'm done with my tasks."
"Alright." Darwin planted a kiss on Fiona. "Xavier will be with you, so feel free to ask him for anything."
Fiona nodded and waved at him.
Darwin caught her hand and kissed it again before leaving the house.
