Chapter 77 Breakfast

Fiona didn't catch much shut-eye that night.

Darwin's few muttered words before bed turned into the stuff of her nightmares.

Just as dawn broke, Fiona woke up.

Darwin was still clinging to her. She tried to wiggle free, but he just held on tighter.

"What's up?" Darwin croaked, waking up.

"Bathroom!" Fiona smacked his arm. "Let go!"

Darwin grumbled and let her go.

Fiona freshened up and, while he was still out cold, headed to the living room. She dug through her bag for her pill organizer and popped her vitamins and folic acid.

Just as she swallowed them, Darwin's voice came from behind. "Why are you taking meds?"

Fiona jumped, choked on her water, and started coughing like crazy.

Seeing this, Darwin rushed over and gently patted her back to help her catch her breath.

Fiona's face turned red from coughing, and she angrily punched Darwin. "You scared me half to death!"

Darwin didn't get mad; instead, he looked pretty pleased.

That punch was kinda cute and sassy.

"Spill it, what meds are you taking?" Darwin asked.

"Last time during my check-up, the doc said I was anemic and needed to load up on trace elements," Fiona replied.

Darwin frowned. "You're anemic and still not eating right?"

Last night, Fiona barely touched her food.

"Most of the time, I do eat right, unless someone ticks me off," she shot back.

Annoying Darwin went quiet.

"It's just past six, come back to bed for a bit." He scooped Fiona up. "Sleep is the key to good health!"

Fiona was exasperated.

"You sleep by yourself, I gotta make breakfast." She pushed him away.

"I'll have someone deliver it," Darwin insisted.

"I already bought the stuff!" She had ordered it with the meat yesterday. "Besides, I wanna eat what I make!"

Darwin reluctantly agreed.

A bit later, Fiona was chillin' in the kitchen, making thick French toast.

Darwin trailed her, sometimes resting his chin on her shoulder.

"The soup last night was bomb, when you making it again?" he asked.

Fiona was surprised.

Darwin had actually changed his taste.

"Probably not anytime soon," Fiona replied.

Darwin frowned. "Why?"

His tone was pretty annoyed.

"My boss is riding me hard, and the job's so tiring, I don't wanna cook anymore," Fiona replied casually.

The morning was quiet.

The smell of food filled the air, making everything feel better.

Fiona could even joke around with Darwin.

Darwin was quiet for a moment.

Then he snorted, "Your boss is a real jerk. I'll go talk to him and make him let you come home to cook soup for me!"

Fiona rolled her eyes at him.

Darwin thought he might really be losing it.

He found her even more adorable when she rolled her eyes.

She was so cute that he wanted to kiss her.

Fiona got kissed out of nowhere.

She glared at Darwin and stopped talking to him.

The French toast was ready.

Fiona heated up two glasses of milk and made a stomach-soothing drink for Darwin.

Darwin was content watching her bustle around under the dim light.

He had almost lost such an ordinary daily life.

He felt a pang of fear.

"In a bit, I'm not heading to the office with you," Fiona said, taking a bite of the French toast.

The crust was crispy, the inside soft and milky—totally delicious.

"Why?" Darwin frowned.

Back when he lived here, they always went to the office together.

"Why? Seriously?" Fiona looked at him, dragging out her words.

Darwin hesitated. "Before..."

Fiona cut him off, "Before, you didn't have a fiancée. You were single. I was single. Even if people thought I was sleeping with you, worst case, they'd call me a gold digger. But now you have a fiancée, and if I still go in and out with you, what will people say about me?"

"Do you really care that much about what others think?" Darwin asked.

"Yes, I do!" Fiona's tone was firm.

They stared each other down for a moment.

Darwin finally caved. "Got it."

Fiona didn't say anything, finished her breakfast, then went to change and put on makeup.

When she came back out, Darwin had also changed into his suit.

He saw Fiona and handed her his tie.

Fiona walked over and, as usual, helped him tie it. "You should rethink the CEO thing. There are more experienced folks in the company. Handing it straight to me isn't really fair."

She was just being honest.

"This is settled, no need to bring it up again." Darwin was always decisive. He'd never gone back to his words.

Fiona was a bit ticked off.

Why did he go back on his word about ending things with her?

"What are you thinking about?" Darwin flicked her nose.

"I have makeup on!" Fiona reflexively slapped his hand away.

It was pretty loud.

Fiona's own hand felt a bit numb, showing she didn't hold back.

After hitting him, she realized, 'Oh no, he's gonna be mad again.'

But to her surprise, Darwin wasn't mad; instead, he laughed. "So fierce."

Fiona blushed. "You should go! I'll leave after you!"

"Kiss me." Darwin bent down.

Fiona was a bit exasperated.

She quickly pecked Darwin on the lips.

Darwin, satisfied, left the car keys for Fiona and happily left.

Fiona stood at the door, a bit dazed.

Why did Darwin seem like a different person?

Could he be possessed by a ghost?

The thought made Fiona shiver.

Five minutes after Darwin left, Fiona also headed out.

After parking the car, she had just opened the car door.

"Fiona!" A venomous voice called out behind her.

Fiona turned around.

She saw Bella getting out of another car.

Her hair was a mess, no makeup on, and it looked like she'd been crying. Her eyes were swollen like walnuts, and her face was puffy.

"Were you beaten?" Fiona asked.

"Despicable!" Bella, reeking of alcohol, raised her hand to slap Fiona.

Fiona dodged.

Bella lost her balance and fell onto the car's hood.

The car had just been turned off, and the hood was still hot.

Bella screamed and got up.

"Are you crazy?" Fiona frowned and asked.

Bella shouted, "Yes! Driven crazy by you! Didn't you say being by Darwin's side was your job? Why! Why did you come back! I got kicked out of the Atlas Group because of you!"

Fiona didn't know Bella had been kicked out.

But she instinctively felt it had something to do with that notebook.

She kept a cold face.

Just as she was about to say something, a gentle voice sounded. "Ms. Woods, is something wrong?"
