Chapter 16
Fiona began by mentioning the Swiss bank account opened in the name of Donald's mother. She then brought Mr. Shepherd from Harvey’s into the picture.
She didn’t include him intentionally in her words, which caught Donald off guard. Throughout the afternoon, Donald had been feeling uneasy. He vaguely sensed that blaming Fiona was no longer a viable option.
However, he was confident that he had covered his tracks perfectly, leaving Fiona with only suspicions. What use were suspicions without evidence? Donald had long prepared himself for Fiona's pushback.
"Donald, is what she said ?" Tony paused for a moment, looking at Donald in disbelief.
Donald was someone he had personally trained. After the incident of data tampering, he suspected everyone except Donald. But now, thinking back, wasn't it Donald who went to the CEO’s office to get the data?
"Boss, it wasn't me!" Donald denied outright, then pointed at Fiona with a stern look. "It was clearly your own mistake, and now you're trying to frame me!"
"We both know if it's framing or the truth."
"Ms. Fiona, I know you've suffered greatly from this incident. Give me some time, and I will give you an explanation," Tony stepped forward.
He hadn't worked with Fiona for long, but Tony, being an intelligent person, could tell that Fiona was cautious. Without concrete evidence, why would she openly accuse Donald in a public setting?
After all, Donald was someone he had personally trained, and he was young, just in his twenties.
Tony felt helpless, but he still wanted to help.
"I'm sorry..." Fiona shook her head.
At this moment, the sales department suddenly became restless. Before Tony could continue to persuade Fiona, the glass door of the department was pushed open and the cops came in.
"You called the cops?" Donald raised his voice, filled with anger and fear. "Fiona, are you that ruthless?"
"Are you Donald?" The leading officer presented his identification. "We received a report that you were involved in a case of unethical competition and bribery. We need you to come with us for some questioning."
"Boss! Boss, please save me!"
Donald was extremely frightened, grasping Tony's arm in a desperate plea for help.
The investigation team was all deployed, and Tony knew that there was no turning back now.
He was furious and slapped Donald. "With such a high commission for salary, why would you do this?”
Donald covered his face, his eyes bloodshot with fear and anger, making him look terrifying.
"Why? How dare you ask why? If it weren't for you pressuring me to be your assistant all the time, I would have climbed up the ranks long ago! I have a family to support and my three children need to go abroad to attend good schools! I need money!”
Fiona gave a few instructions to the head of the investigation team. She then prepared to return to the CEO’s office and submit the pre-prepared incident handling report.
Meanwhile, the investigation team took out handcuffs to put on Donald while Fiona also stood by the door to watch. But just then. Donald suddenly erupted like a mad dog and violently pushed away the officer beside him. In a swift motion, he grabbed Miss Ford's sales champion trophy from nearby and smashed it toward Fiona's head.
"Oh my god!"
"Ms. Fiona!"
Screams filled the air.
Fiona felt something flying toward her from behind. Instinctively, she squatted down.
With a loud bang, the glass door shattered. Even though the material of the glass door wasn’t supposed to break even during an explosion, unfortunately for Fiona, this door had been somewhat broken before. However, the sales team had been focused on R&K's project, and it hadn't repaired the door in time.
After the glass door was smashed, the entire piece of glass detached from the door frame and directly hit Fiona.
“Ms. Fiona!”
People exclaimed in shock and hurriedly rushed over. The investigators also pinned Donald to the ground. Darwin arrived just in time to witness this scene. He didn't even have time to react, losing his usual composure and elegance as he hurriedly ran over.
“Oh my god, there’s so much blood!" Miss Ford was closest to Fiona. Seeing Fiona covered in glass shards, especially with a piece of glass embedded in her left and right hands, was terrifying.
"It's nothing..." Fiona was in so much pain that she was about to faint.
“Miss Ford, please help me call…”
"Fiona!" Darwin's anxious voice interrupted Fiona, making her look up in astonishment. Darwin was already half squatting beside her, holding onto her bleeding hand.
"You bitch, you only rely on Darwin. Without him, you're nothing! Just wait for me, as long as I'm alive, the first thing I do when I get out is to kill you!"
Donald was still shouting while lying on the ground. Darwin had already roughly figured out the causes and consequences of the data manipulation and gave Donald a fierce look. He was about to lift Fiona up. Fiona, with a mix of astonishment and gratitude, reacted after she understood his intentions.
In recent years, everyone in the company had been aware of Fiona's and Darwin's relationship but Darwin had always avoided interaction as such in public.
“Oh my God, what’s going on?”
Even the surprised voice sounded pleasant. Fiona was instantly brought back to reality. Instinctively, she looked at the person behind Darwin who was bending down to look at her.
The woman had blond hair, blue eyes and fair skin. Her face was one Fiona had seen on the internet before.
She was Hathaway Ross, Darwin's fiancée.
“Mr. Darwin!” Fiona immediately stepped back.
“It’s just a scratch on my arm, I can handle it myself!”
As Fiona spoke, she subconsciously grabbed Miss Ford’s arm and stood up. Soon, Darwin’s embrace was empty.
Fiona’s bleeding left hand hung down, with sticky blood dripping in front of him.
“Miss Ford, could you please accompany me..."
“Alright, alright! I came by car, I’ll take you to get your wounds treated immediately!” Miss Ford was on the verge of tears.
Fiona thanked her and then hurriedly left the sales department, as if she was fleeing from something. Fortunately, there was a hospital less than a kilometer away from the company.
Miss Ford drove as fast as she could, but the traffic lights were a nuisance and it took ten minutes for them to arrive at the hospital. Fiona remained silent the entire time, looking frighteningly pale.
She had only one thought in her mind. She hoped that losing so much blood wouldn't affect the baby.
Soon, they arrived at the emergency room. The glass was deeply embedded, so they were preparing to use anesthesia on her. Fiona made an excuse to keep Miss Ford away.
Then she shook her head at the nurse, “No anesthesia, please.”
The nurse was startled. “It’ll be very painful.”
"I can endure it."
Time dragged on painfully as the nurse started from disinfection, removal of glass fragments and debris, and finally stitching.
Fiona only shed tears and didn’t utter a sound. She remembered how Darwin drove his car in the afternoon. So, it turned out he went to pick up his fiancée.
Fortunately, she cleverly cleared everything in the car related to her. Ms. Hathaway looked even prettier in person than in the photos and videos online.
Darwin, that scumbag, got a real bargain.
