Chapter 206 Rival in Love

"What's wrong?" Alice frowned slightly, instinctively glancing at Chris with a nervous look.

"What, are you so preoccupied with your grandmother that you don't even care to inquire about the person she injured?" Ashton asked.

"Is the injured person someone you know, Ashton?" Alice inquired.

"Yes! The injured person is my own grandmother!" Ashton replied.

"Go and see to your grandmother. I'll handle things here," Chris told Alice.

After a moment of silence, Alice said, "Ashton, we're soon to be family, and I believe we should speak frankly to each other. I feel guilty about your grandmother's injury, but have you sought to understand the circumstances of what happened?"

"Circumstances?" Fiona chuckled, "Tell me, what are these 'circumstances'?"

"My grandmother was a teacher back in the day and has always been very gentle. She never hurt anyone, even when she was ill. How could she have hurt your grandmother without any reason?" Alice asked.

Ashton exploded instantly.

"What do you mean? Are you saying it's my grandmother's fault?"

"Ashton, calm down, she didn't mean it that way," Chris said sternly, stepping forward to reach for Ashton's wrist, "Come with me over there..."

"Don't touch me!" Ashton slapped Chris's hand away.

"Chris, let me tell you, my grandmother means more to me than anyone else. Since Miss Alice feels wronged and thinks that it was my grandma who started the trouble, I will investigate. If it turns out that it was not my grandma's fault, I will pursue justice to the end!" Ashton's eyes reddened, tears swirling in her eyes, but she held them back, refusing to let them fall.

Don't cry if you've been told not to.

Why should she cry in front of Chris? Why in front of Alice?

"The surveillance system is down," Chris replied.

Ashton was stunned.

She looked at Chris and suddenly thought of something.

Her gaze lowered and then she laughed, "Chris, you really go out of your way for your fiancée, don't you?"

Chris stared at Ashton with furrowed brows.

At that moment, worried about Ashton, Grandma Carey also came out in her wheelchair.

Ashton suppressed her emotions, turned, and hurried towards Grandma Carey.

"Grandma, why did you come out?"

"I'm really fine."

"Four stitches and you call that fine?" Fiona suddenly interjected, then looked at Chris with a smile, "Chris, don't depend too much on the surveillance stunt you pulled. It's not like it can't be recovered if it's been deleted. Alright, we won't disturb you anymore with our familial duties."

After Fiona finished speaking, she started walking towards Ashton.

Then, as if she remembered something, she glanced at Chris, "Oh, and you better not let Auntie hear about this incident."

"I won't," Chris replied.

Fiona was silent. She withdrew her gaze and went over to Ashton's side.

Together, they pushed Grandma Carey back to the ward.

"So, you must be Chicago and Charles's mother, right?" Grandma Carey looked at Fiona affectionately.

Fiona smiled and nodded, "Grandma, I'm sorry for not visiting you earlier. I've been swamped with work recently."

Grandma Carey replied with a smile.

Ashton held the elderly woman's wrinkled hand, pressed her forehead against the back of her hand, and could no longer hold back her tears as they fell.

"Look at you! Are you embarrassed to cry in front of your dear friends? I really am okay! It doesn't even hurt," Grandma Carey said, her hands flustered.

"I should have just barged in and smashed her head in!" Ashton gritted his teeth in anger.

Why did it have to be Alice's grandmother?

How could Chris be so cold and heartless, completely siding with her?

"Dummy, then you'd go to jail!" Grandma Carey slapped Ashton on the head.

"Grandma," Fiona spoke up gently, "How about we switch to a different hospital?"

The Rhoads family also owned a hospital.

"That seems...like such a bother..."

"It's no bother, my grandma made sure to remind me and Ashton to take good care of you before she went home," said Fiona.

Grandma Carey pondered for a moment.

She smiled, knowing that her continuing to stay would only worry Ashton.

"I'll go handle the paperwork!" Ashton lifted his head, wiping away tears.

This place was a private, elite hospital, but it was disgraceful!

"Go on, I'll chat with grandma," Fiona said softly.

Ashton nodded.

She took a deep breath and left the hospital room.

Someone was waiting outside.

Ashton ignored them.

She walked away quickly, but the person followed.

A moment later, in a secluded area, her wrist was grabbed, "Ashton, can you calm down a bit, let's talk."

"Talk about what?" Ashton looked at him. "About how you had the surveillance deleted? Or how your fiancée framed my grandmother?"

Chris's brow furrowed deeply.

"I didn't know she was your grandma," he replied.

"And now you do?"

Chris pressed his lips together tightly. He did that when he was upset.

"If you're just here to spout nonsense, then please let me go," Ashton said, word by word.

"I've seen the X-rays of your grandma's injuries. Nothing vital was hit. Can we...let this go? I'll make sure they compensate..."

Ashton's hand, almost instinctively, slapped Chris across the face.

Chris was taken aback, looking at Ashton in disbelief.

Ashton's slap was fierce and now, her hand was numb.

"Ashton!" Chris pushed her against the wall, anger rising in his eyes, "You're the one who wanted to break up, and you're the one causing a scene now. What exactly do you want?"

"A scene? Now it's her grandmother who hurt mine! Even if it's just a minor injury, that's still due to my grandma's luck! Even if it was just a scratch, I wouldn't let it go, and she needed four stitches!" Ashton was adamant.

Just as the two stood opposed, a voice rang out not far away.

"Ashton?"

Ashton looked over, startled.

Chris, on the other hand, released Ashton's hand.

"What are you doing here?" Ashton asked in surprise.

Kenny looked mature in a suit yesterday.

Today he was in a pale grey suit, his hair looking soft and touchable. Wearing a pair of gold-rimmed glasses.

The words "golden retriever with glasses" popped into Ashton's mind.

"Here to visit the sick," Kenny approached with the unmistakable air of a young master.

"Come here," he beckoned her over lazily.

Only then did Ashton realize she was still by Chris's side, and she promptly moved to Kenny's side.

Chris's brows were deeply furrowed.

"And who is this?" Kenny glanced at Ashton's reddened wrist with disapproval before turning his gaze to Chris.

Ashton lowered her eyelids.

Who was Chris?

A brother? An ex?

Or the husband of the granddaughter of the person who caused the accident?

Finally, she spoke…

"He's my stepfather's son," Ashton answered.

A flicker passed through Chris's eyes.

Kenny raised an eyebrow slightly, a look of understanding on his face, "Sir, if there's a problem, we can talk it out nicely. Being rough with a lady is not gentlemanly."
