The PR department immediately messaged back, "Understood." Darwin tossed his phone aside. Since she had run back to Simon once again, he would feign respect and well-wishes, hoping Lilian would forever be chained to Simon.
Simon's hatred for Darwin had probably begun when he spiked Lilian's drink with a little something, and she had gone out of her mind and clung to him, crying out Darwin's name. It was doubly ironic because during those days, Darwin's company, Solomon, was making waves in the investment world, becoming the talk of the town as a rising star in the business sector.
Simon had dug into Lilian and Darwin's past and learned that she had left Darwin, who was then a vegetative shell of a man, to marry Simon. It was a relief for him, a release of pent-up frustrations. But his torment of Lilian only intensified, a punishment for her and a twisted reward for his injured ego, as he believed himself truly in love with her while she harbored feelings for another man.
As for that young, up-and-coming "white boy", Simon never gave him much credit. But year by year, that upstart grew stronger and increasingly hard to ignore.
Simon had even hired hitmen to take out Darwin on several occasions, but all those attempts had ended in failure. The assassination nearly succeeded the last time when he was on a work trip with a secretary who bore a striking resemblance to Lilian. The international crowd seemed more clued in on this couple than the people of Armie Country. While “#WhoIsPrinceSimon” still trended there, the rest of the world had moved on to revisiting old tales of Simon's trysts with three bombshells, and the once nightmarish sight of the Eastern queen weeping drunkenly in the streets.
Lilian wasn't new to shaping her image through press releases. Her exotic allure and Simon's dashing figure had been the highlights even when she first joined the European circles. Her story as the 'Mysterious Eastern Beauty' had spread far and wide.
And now, rehashed on the world wide web, these narratives took on new life. The slap nearly left Lilian's cheek swollen.
"Wow, Lil really showed her moxie, didn't she? Dumped that tycoon ex when he showed his true colors, and just like that, she's back with her prince of an ex-husband!"
"Man, how does that girl move so fast? Has the dust even settled on her last mess? What's the deal with her mom? Did they find her brother? Did she have anything to do with Secretary Woods' plane crash? And that explosion at Mrs. Darwin's—was Lilian behind it? I'm freaking out here! Someone fill me in!"
Someone quickly responded, "What are you thinking? There's no way they'll find evidence. Do you think she'd be off the hook otherwise?"
"After Prince Simon's tell-all, I have to say I feel better now. Wishing Lil and her beau a love that lasts forever!"
During the online frenzy, some persistent paparazzi reached out to Solomon's PR department.
"Hi, can I ask if Darwin knows that Lilian has reconciled with her ex? What's his take on it?"
It was the kind of query that usually went unanswered when reporters called.
But to everyone's surprise...
"Mr. Darwin is aware and has no particular thoughts on the matter, just respect and well wishes."
"Respect and well wishes" quickly started trending.
"Is Mr. Solomon throwing shade here?"
"I'm rolling—'respect and well wishes' is rich!"
"Does anyone else feel jealousy and a bit of heartache in those four words? Darwin still cares about his first love, doesn't he?" said a fan, shipping the old flame and Darwin.
The comments rolled in.
"LOL, Darwin would scoff at that, come on! Wake up! Stop romanticizing garbage ships!"
While "respect and well wishes" was trending, some marketer dropped several photos.
They were of Darwin and Fiona taking an evening stroll in the hospital garden and a few seconds of video.
In the video, Darwin walked a little, then wrapped his arm around his wife's shoulder, pulling her close and planting a kiss.
When the video dropped, social media exploded again.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, when did Mr. Solomon become such a Casanova? That look before and after the kiss, talk about intense chemistry!"
"More than the kiss, though, I'm all about those pics. Mr. Solomon’s being all cute, he’s always hugging and clinging to her! Paparazzi, work harder, will you? Next time, snap some pics of Mr. Solomon being affectionate in a suit! Hurry up, I live for that stuff!"
