Chapter 36 Mutual Destruction!

At that moment, the kidnapper's phone buzzed.

He peeked at the rearview mirror, flashed a nasty grin, lit up a smoke, answered the call, and hit the speaker. "Why the hell are you so slow? Where you at?" barked an impatient voice on the other end.

The kidnapper replied, "Twenty more minutes. This chick got wise, so I had to handle her."

"Did you sleep with her?" the guy on the other end yelled.

The kidnapper said, "How could I? Mack didn't give the green light, so I wouldn't dare."

Fiona cringed at the crude and filthy talk.

She lowered her eyelids, fighting the urge to puke, and slowly reached into her handbag.

Thalassa had heard she was heading solo to a sketchy place like New Port and had slipped a stun gun into Fiona's bag.

"She was about to call the cops," the kidnapper continued.

"She probably doesn't know Mack's tight with the local police chief, huh?"

Fiona's heart sank.

The kidnapper glanced at Fiona again through the rearview mirror.

His eyes were full of scorn and mockery.

"Alright, you guys wait at the intersection. Once Mack's done having his fun, everyone gets a piece!" the driver said, ready to start the car.

Fiona bit her lip.

She couldn't wait for him to start the car.

If he got stunned and she was still in the car, she'd be in danger too.

So, she seized the moment and lunged forward.

The kidnapper was alert but a tad too slow.

"You have a death wish..." Before he could finish, his neck went numb, his eyes glazed over, and he blacked out.

"Jo? Jo!" Urgent calls came from the phone.

Fiona coldly hung up.

She tossed her bag onto the passenger seat, got out, dragged the unconscious kidnapper out, and dumped him by the roadside.

The stun gun's effect was short-lived.

Before getting back in the car, Fiona zapped him twice more.

Then she hurriedly got back in, locked the doors.

The kidnapper's phone kept ringing.

Fiona ignored it and pulled out her own phone from her bag, which was off.

As she was turning it on, a shadow lunged at her from the side.

Fiona hadn't expected the stun gun's effect to be so short.

She didn't have time to think, floored the gas pedal, and sped off.

The kidnapper was knocked down by the car, rolling several times on the ground.

By the time he got up to chase, the car was already far away.

Fiona had never experienced such a moment of escape, driving as fast as she could.

She didn't dare ignore what the kidnappers had said on the phone.

She didn't dare call the cops recklessly.

If what they said was true, wouldn't she be walking right into a trap?

Fiona glanced outside.

The kidnapper had driven the car onto a remote country road.

The surroundings were desolate.

The car's fuel was also running low.

The kidnapper's buddies were probably nearby.

Fiona thought for a moment and immediately called Wyatt.

However, at this moment, Wyatt was...

"Mr. Durham, it's no exaggeration to say that you and Ms. Woods are like our second parents. If it weren't for your kindness and giving us a chance..."

Wyatt had been given several drinks.

He waved his hand. "I'm not that meticulous; it's all thanks to Ms. Woods."

The surroundings were noisy.

Wyatt's phone was face down on the table, set to Do Not Disturb mode.

Fiona called twice but got nothing.

Her phone, which hadn't seen a charger all day, was now flashing less than 5% battery.

No charging cable in the car, of course.

And to top it off, a bunch of cars appeared in the distance, gunning it towards her like they were in some high-speed chase.

After a quick second of panic, Fiona called Darwin.

If her luck was really that bad, she might not make it out tonight.

But at least not in this godforsaken place.

She was in this mess because of Darwin's business.

He should at least know.

Plus, he was always the guy with all the answers.

He'd definitely save her.

The phone rang a few times.

Fiona's foot on the gas pedal was starting to go numb.

Just when she thought Darwin was still pissed and wouldn't pick up, the call connected.

Instantly, Fiona's tears burst out. "Darwin..."

"Ms. Woods, Darwin is in the shower. Do you need something?" A gentle and pleasant voice came from the other end.

She recognized it as Hathaway's voice.

It was like something in Fiona's mind shattered into pieces.

"Ms. Woods?"

"Nothing, I dialed the wrong number."

Fiona quickly hung up.

There was a turn ahead.

She was momentarily distracted, and when she snapped back, she quickly turned the wheel, but the car still grazed a road sign.

The phone rolled under the seat.

She couldn't reach it.

Fear and despair swallowed her whole.

The cars behind were still hot on her tail.

She vaguely saw someone leaning out of the passenger seat, shouting something at her.

Fiona glanced at the fuel gauge.

At her current speed, she could only go another 30 miles.

Slowly, Fiona calmed down.

She'd rather die than face the humiliation from those creeps.

Besides, falling into their hands would mean certain death anyway.

Better to go out on her own terms.

Fiona let out a long breath.

The wound on her left hand had somehow reopened, and blood was soaking through the bandage.

She held the steering wheel with her left hand.

Her right hand gently covered her lower abdomen. She thought, 'Baby, I'm afraid I can't bring you into this world. If there's a next life, come find me again.'

Fiona kept driving.

Even though she was ready for the worst, she still hoped for a miracle.

If she could just reach a town or a populated area, she might escape this nightmare.

But Fiona's luck had been in the toilet lately.

The car ran until it was almost out of fuel.

The surroundings were still desolate, even more so than before.

The car's speed gradually slowed down.

The cars chasing her, however, did not.

Fiona closed her eyes.

She let out a rare curse.

Then she steeled herself, her eyes turning fierce, and made a sharp U-turn.

Mack's car was among the chasing cars.

"Mack, what's she doing?" the driver asked, puzzled.

Fiona was driving like a maniac.

A group of men couldn't catch up with her.

Now she suddenly turned around.

Was she giving up and surrendering?

"Hurry! Get everyone out of the way! She's gonna ram us!" Mack quickly grabbed the steering wheel.

The cars were all speeding.

Two cars, in a panic, swerved too hard and crashed into the green median strip.
