Chapter 1481
"Does he look like him? Just tell me, does he?" Brady slapped his thigh in frustration.
"Does it matter?" Chicago looked at Brady, her eyes still glistening with tears.
Brady paused, thinking it over. "I guess it doesn't matter, but still... We used to be such good friends when we were kids. Now he's married into Wholesome Corporation and is targeting us!"
"What do you mean?"
Chicago rarely got involved in the family business.
At eighteen, she had already decided on her path in life.
She wouldn't touch the family enterprises, whether it was the Solomon Group or the Rhoads Group.
"The subsidiary he leads under Wholesome Corporation is directly competing with the Solomon Group. Three months ago, they blindsided our chip company with a major blow! If it weren't for Uncle Burl and my uncle's foresight, who knows what kind of mess we'd be in!" Brady's brow furrowed. "You have no idea how I felt when I saw him in San Francisco that day. We never wronged him, did we? When he first came to North Alabama, didn't our family treat him well? He even went abroad with money from your family."
Brady had always been like this, talking nonstop.
"It's just business competition..." Chicago handed Brady his phone back. "Brady, you have kids now. How can you still be so childish? The adult world isn't the same as when we were kids. You said it yourself, he's Wholesome Corporation's son-in-law. Of course, he's going to help his father-in-law."
"Yeah, you're right." Brady still felt a pang of regret.
He had been chubby and slow as a kid, without many close friends.
When Chicago's family came to North Alabama, it was the happiest time of his childhood.
Ethan was the first friend he ever made.
Even though they were friends for less than a month before Ethan left for school abroad.
"I need to go see my great-grandmother." Chicago paused. "Don't mention this to the adults."
Chicago had grown up. She had become adept at understanding people.
If she had been naive as a child, she now understood Ethan's actions against her family's company, his sudden departure, and his disappearance from her parents' control.
All of it pointed to why Ethan had suddenly gone abroad.
He had been forced to leave.
Fiona wouldn't force anyone to do something they didn't want to do.
So...
Chicago's gaze drifted through the hallway, landing on Darwin, who was talking to Fiona.
"Don't worry, I know what I'm doing. Besides, he doesn't go by Ethan anymore..." Brady sighed deeply. "Forget it, let's just say I was mistaken."
After parting ways with Brady, Chicago went to Janna's side.
She felt increasingly uneasy, a mix of her own and Charles's negative emotions.
Janna seemed distracted.
When she saw Chicago, she quickly reached out her hand.
Chicago took her hand.
"Did you come from Charlotte's place?"
"Yeah." Chicago nodded, then slumped down next to Janna, laying her head on Janna's lap like a child.
"Aren't you too old to be acting like this?" Janna chided gently, but her hand tenderly stroked Chicago's hair. "Is Charlotte getting married?"
"Yes, great-grandmother, you're worried too, aren't you?" Chicago asked.
"Of course." Janna's eyes lowered. "Did she tell you anything?"
"About the man?" Chicago sighed. "He's good-looking, with blonde hair and blue eyes, tall and gentlemanly. Charlotte says he's a good person."
"Is that all she said? Nothing else?" Janna pressed.
"Anything else?" Chicago was puzzled. "Like their love story? No, there wasn't any of that."
From what Charlotte had said, she didn't love the man; he was just suitable.
