Chapter 1504
The crowd was getting restless.
The fourth item up for auction was a childhood painting by Chicago, showing a wall of roses.
Even though the colors weren't as refined as her current work, she was only five or six when she painted it. Honestly, a lot of adults today couldn't pull off such vibrant colors.
The bidding kicked off.
The atmosphere got intense real quick.
The price shot up to three million dollars.
A guy in the corner, looking more and more impatient, was about to raise his paddle.
But someone next to him pressed down on his hand.
He frowned and looked over.
Chicago had somehow made her way to his side.
The irritation in his eyes vanished instantly.
The bidding continued among the others, but the increments were small, each bidder waiting for the others to back down.
"Ms. Rhoads, you stopping me from bidding?" The man leaned in a bit closer to Chicago, his tone playful.
"Ethan, what are you talking about?" Chicago frowned.
Ethan glanced at her.
He raised his other hand and said, "Ten million dollars."
"What are you doing?" Someone stood up, clearly annoyed. "Showing off your money? Do you have to buy every painting? Why don't you just put down a hundred million and take them all?"
"Yeah, where are the organizers? Shouldn't there be a rule that one person can only buy one painting?"
"Sorry, sorry." Chicago stepped forward, "This lady's suggestion is very good. Let's do as she says—one painting per person."
"Sir, you can only choose one of the three." Chicago looked at Ethan.
Ethan met her gaze calmly. "Fine, I'll take the roses."
Ten million dollars secured the painting.
After the auction ended, Chicago went on stage to thank everyone who participated.
Then she announced the end of the exhibition tour.
As the crowd dispersed, Chicago walked backstage with a displeased expression.
Someone followed her.
She decided to avoid the crowd.
In the open-air corridor, lined with blooming violets, she stopped.
Turning to the person following her, she asked, "What do you want?"
Chicago and Ethan had actually reunited three years ago.
At a cocktail party, he had attended with his date, the heiress of Wholesome Corporation. They had exchanged glances but didn't speak.
Since then, they kept running into each other at various events.
But they had never really interacted, and she had no idea why he was acting up today.
"I thought you would always pretend not to know who I am."
"I never pretended." Chicago replied calmly.
"So you just don't want to deal with me?" Ethan smirked.
"Yes." Chicago answered without hesitation. "Ethan, you have a fiancée. I don't interact with men like that outside of work."
Ethan's expression changed.
"Is there anything else you want to say to me?"
Chicago glanced at him.
She lowered her eyes.
"When you first left, I sent you many messages."
Ethan's fingers trembled slightly.
"You never replied." Chicago looked up again. "Our friendship ended then. I don't know what my father did back then, but I understand your actions against the Solomon Group and Burl's company over the years. However, I'm sorry, Ethan. No matter what my father did, I won't remain friends with someone who is an enemy to my family."
