Chapter 1498
Charlotte's heart, which had been filled with anxiety, finally settled back into place.
That year, it wasn't just Janna's words that terrified Charlotte.
As Janna spoke to her with a serious expression, Charlotte's mind was filled with the image of Fiona's face.
On Janna's lap lay an old photo album from a few years back, taken during a family vacation. It included Charles, Chicago, Charlotte, and the ever-growing Melissa, along with the Walker family kids.
Janna's wrinkled, slightly curled hand gently brushed over a photo taken during a trip to the prairie, capturing everyone together at sunset.
"Great-grandma," Charles said, standing tall.
Janna looked up, her eyes welling with tears.
"You're back?" she asked, her voice trembling. "I heard from Chicago that you knew I asked Charlotte to break up with you that year?"
"Yeah," Charles replied softly, his eyes downcast.
"And that's why you haven't come home these past few years," Janna choked up. "Do you hate your great-grandma?"
"No," Charles shook his head.
"I watched you all grow up, each one of you so good-looking and smart, shining in your fields at such a young age. It fills me with pride," Janna said, not treating Charlotte as an outsider. She wished for all her grandchildren to live happy and fulfilling lives.
Charlotte and Charles could be siblings, but how could they be lovers? There were countless barriers between them.
Janna, having grown up and thrived in the world of fame and fortune, had seen too many unsuitable people come together for love, only to end up estranged.
"Great-grandma," Charles interrupted Janna, which was rare for him.
Janna looked at him.
Charles's gaze was calm as he spoke gently, "Charlotte and I have decided to get our marriage license tomorrow. We'll have the wedding whenever she has time."
Janna was slightly taken aback. "But didn't she say..."
"She was just helping a friend out, not getting married," Charles explained succinctly.
Janna was momentarily confused, then clapped her hands and laughed. "Why didn't you say so earlier? I've been losing sleep over this for the past few nights!"
Charles was taken aback.
"To be honest, I've regretted it for the past few years, seeing you both unhappy and not coming home," Janna said, clutching her chest. "What nonsense about social classes? Charlotte grew up under my care. What class difference is there? And as for work, we can always hire professional managers to run the company. Your parents have plenty of capable people working for them!"
Janna was genuinely happy. She had been feeling terrible these past few days.
"Great-grandma," Charles was quite surprised. He had come prepared to argue his case with Janna.
"Well, I don't completely regret it. These three or four years apart have probably made you both realize how much you mean to each other," Janna said, rubbing her stiff cheeks from smiling. "Since you know the obstacles and still choose each other, hold on tight to each other's hands through any storm."
"Okay!" Charles nodded, his eyes red.
"Those boxes on the table were meant to be Charlotte's wedding gifts from me," Janna said.
Charles couldn't help but say, "You broke us up, and you didn't even think of helping me win her back?"
She had even prepared wedding gifts.
