Chapter 198 Car Accident
No matter how much Chicago dawdled, the time for them to part arrived.
In front of the nanny car, Darwin took out a box and handed it to Chicago, "This phone is for you, Chicago. I've installed a chat app and added myself to your contacts. Whenever you want to talk, just send me a message."
Chicago took the box and finally couldn't hold back her sobs.
Darwin hugged her with a pained heart.
"Be good, and I'll come to see you when I can," Darwin promised.
Chicago didn't know how to tell Darwin.
Mommy wouldn't allow her to see her uncle again.
"Uncle, I will work really hard on my painting and try to have an exhibition soon!"
Then, when uncle came to her exhibition, they could meet again.
"Okay," Darwin patted Chicago's little head, "Get in the car now! It's late, and your parents must be worried."
Chicago buried her head in the crook of Darwin's neck.
In a muffled voice, she said, "Chicago doesn't have a dad."
Darwin was startled, "What did you say, Chicago?"
"Chicago doesn't have a daddy," Chicago's voice was tinged with a cry.
Darwin never imagined that the reason she kept mentioning mommy and not daddy was actually because she didn't have one.
"Uncle, can I call you daddy?" Chicago asked through sobs.
"Chicago…" Darwin was somewhat panicked.
Darwin's heart felt as if it were being cut.
He thought of his own child. He thought of his own foolishness and distrust.
"You...you can," Darwin's voice trembled.
Chicago hugged him, crying out, "Daddy!"
Instinctively, Darwin held Chicago tight.
"Chicago, it's okay. I'm very capable, and I'll protect you like a father from now on. Whenever you need me, I'll be there," Darwin promised solemnly.
Chicago nodded, finally willing to let go of Darwin and he let go of her too.
He smiled gently, his large hand delicately wiping away Chicago's tears.
Chicago hiccupped.
"Uncle, I should go home now."
"Okay." Darwin smiled and nodded.
Chicago, crying, waved goodbye to Darwin. Wendy then picked her up, put her in the car seat, and fastened her in.
"Mr. Solomon, I'm very, very thankful for your time," Wendy said with her eyes red with exhaustion.
"Be smart," he said.
Chicago had shared a lot with Darwin today.
Including the part where Wendy shielded her with her body, while she herself was being mauled with blood all over by a big dog.
"Okay!" Wendy nodded.
"Can you tell me how to contact Chicago's mother?" Darwin asked hesitantly after a moment.
"Oh!" Wendy paused briefly, then quickly waved her hands, "No, no!"
Darwin frowned, "Does she know I am the CEO of Solomon?"
"Yes, she does," Wendy nodded.
How many people sought to cling to his relations, to soar high.
Yet Chicago's mother seemed indifferent to the opportunity delivered to her door?
"Then, Mr. Solomon, I'll take the young lady home now..." Wendy said, and then she too got into the car.
As the car door closed, Darwin heard Chicago's cries.
They tugged at his heart.
He wanted to stop the car, to bring Chicago back.
But after all, she wasn't his child. What right did he have to do such a thing?
This was the second time Fiona saw Darwin part with Chicago.
Not much time had passed in between.
But Darwin was evidently more and more reluctant to part ways.
Standing by the roadside, despite his distinguished air, Fiona felt he was like a stray dog that couldn't find its way home.
Fiona thought about his resolute decision to terminate the pregnancy. It felt entirely disconnected from his demeanor today.
Some things, once they happen, cannot be forgiven.
Rolling up the car window, Fiona stopped looking back, followed the Chicago traffic, and headed home.
Darwin checked on the kitten once more. He hadn't planned to keep it, intending only to save it for Chicago's sake and then find a reliable employee to adopt it.
But now... Mr. Solomon changed his mind. He'd care for it, but he couldn't take it back to his apartment as the place was full of Fiona's things, and it wouldn't do if the kitten damaged anything.
Darwin gazed at the kitten, his mind swirling with thoughts. He didn't want to go back to the apartment.
He drove aimlessly around the city, eventually stopping outside Chelsea's brightly lit studio. He wasn't sure if she was still at work.
The answer came the next morning. He saw Chelsea's car approaching from a distance. When Fiona saw another car parked in her spot, she was stunned.
She got out of her car to see if the owner had left a note. Approaching, she realized that someone was curled up inside, seemingly asleep.
She tapped lightly on the window, and the person inside quickly woke up. As the window rolled down, the occupant frowned unhappily at her, and both Fiona and he were taken aback.
"What are you doing here?" Fiona asked with a frown.
Darwin looked pale and pressed his hand against his stomach, a pained expression on his face.
"Just passing by, felt unwell, and stopped for a bit. I'm leaving now," he said, his frown deepening as if he were in severe pain.
Fiona frowned back, "You can't drive like this, get a taxi."
"It's nothing, just ate something cold yesterday…"
"Something cold?" Fiona's eyelids drooped.
Was it at the amusement park, eating ice cream with Chicago?
Darwin's stomach had always been sensitive. He was particular about his food. Now, it seemed his stomach issues had worsened.
That's what Fiona thought when a voice in her head vigorously kicked in, "Don't sympathize with a jerk. It'll bring you misfortune!"
Instantly sobered, Fiona stepped aside to let Darwin drive out. Surprised, he gave her an incredulous look. He already looked so pitiful, and she was still making him leave?
The last hint of color drained from Darwin's lips. He started the car and slowly pulled out of the spot.
Fiona got into her car, expertly parked it, locked it, and headed for the studio. Suddenly, a loud crash echoed.
She turned around immediately to see Darwin's car had hit a wall. The wall was leaning over, and Darwin's vehicle had the front half completely smashed.
"Darwin!" Fiona exclaimed in shock.
She immediately ran towards the scene.
The front of the car was billowing with smoke, the airbag had deployed, and Darwin's head was covered in blood, unconscious.
Fiona's scalp tingled with numbness.
Thankfully, Darwin hadn't locked the car door.
After opening the door, she unbuckled Darwin's seatbelt, shouting his name while dragging him out of the car.
She pulled Darwin a safe distance from the vehicle.
Then she quickly checked his limbs for broken arms or legs...
But what about internal injuries?
What about his brain?
He had a history of being in a vegetative state from a car accident!
