Chapter 421 In the Throes of Love
Kenny's face was splitting with a grin.
Darwin had witnessed every stage of Kenny's growth due to the ongoing interaction between their families.
It wasn't anything special.
Kenny was the strong, silent type, an unemotional study machine.
In other words, he was nothing like the man basking in joy before him now.
"Eloped, did you?" Darwin inquired.
Kenny looked away from his adoration and nodded, "Yeah."
"Now…" Darwin was not one to pry into others' business and was awkward in such conversations.
But Kenny was full of insight.
It all started when a professor had casually remarked, "Your wife seems quite adorable."
The typically taciturn Kenny could then sit down with the professor and elaborate on how adorable his wife was.
"Madly in love," Kenny responded.
Darwin was left speechless.
Irritated with nowhere to direct his frustration, he turned to the nervous male nurse treating his wound. "What's with the shaky hands?"
The nurse was puzzled.
Why focus on him while you chat?
"Did... did I hurt you?"
Darwin needed to pay more attention.
"Stop dawdling and just get on with it," Darwin snapped.
The nurse hastened to finish the last bit, wrapped up the bandage, and hurried off.
"Is my sister-in-law still upset?" Kenny asked.
It was hard not to notice.
From when he and Thalassa entered until Thalassa went to find Fiona, Darwin's glances at the couple were blatantly uncomfortable.
Darwin remained silent.
After a pause, he looked at Kenny. "Since you're marrying Thalassa, you must have dug into her past."
"You mean Chris?" Kenny appeared unconcerned. "That's history. Now, Mrs. Walker is quite fond of me."
Their affection was a daily expression.
"She did a lot for Chris and loved him deeply. How did you win her over so quickly and make her head over heels for you?"
Just curious.
Who wouldn't want to be madly in love?
Darwin surely did.
Kenny chuckled, "First off, it's all about the bad apples making the good ones look better. That Chris guy was bad news, and Mrs. Walker saw right through him long ago. She's had enough of his antics. As for being head over heels..."
He glanced at Darwin. "There's no secret formula; you just need a heart full of sincerity."
Kenny never played games with Thalassa.
He would gladly give whatever she wanted, never once thinking about what he might get in return.
After listening, Darwin felt like Kenny had just shown up boasting a royal flush.
Sincerity?
Darwin fell into deep thought.
Was her refusal to forgive him simply because he hadn't been sincere enough?
"Bro, if you're out of options, you could involve the kids," Kenny interjected, snapping Darwin out of his reverie. "Charlie and Chicago are smart cookies. If they fully accept you, they'll be your ace in the hole in winning back your wife."
In the room
One kid was cuddling in Mommy's arms, snoring.
The other was fiddling with his cell phone, up to who knows what.
"Charlie, what are you looking at?" Thalassa, draped over the bed and half-asleep, lifted an eyelid and showed some concern for Charlie.
"Deleting posts," Charlie responded.
Half of Thalassa's drowsiness dissipated, and she propped herself up. "Deleting what?"
"Pictures showing my sister's face."
Due to continuing public interest, online discussions about Darwin's children were still as heated as ever.
Thalassa settled back down.
"This'll get sorted out by your folks later on; they won't hide you and your sister away," Thalassa mumbled.
Before Charlie could reply, she had drifted off to sleep.
Charlie's fingers paused—they won't hide them?
That's what he thought.
But it was just that—a thought without an answer.
The destruction of Grandma Solomon's grave had taken place, and after waking up, Fiona went to attend to it personally.
Once it was sorted, the group didn't linger around.
After lunch, they hit the highway back to Bay City.
At departure
Darwin acted out of character.
He didn't ride with Fiona, Charlie, and Chicago.
Instead, he drove separately.
Fiona figured he had his errands and didn't pry.
But upon reaching Bay City, he went straight home.
"You had something to do, didn't you?" said Thalassa when she saw Darwin return, somewhat shocked.
Fiona was surprised, too.
"Who said that?" Darwin, changing his shoes at the entrance, replied, "Chicago has a test soon. Why would I schedule anything else?"
With those words, Darwin glanced at the clock.
"Chicago, you've got ten minutes before that quiz. Are you ready?" a voice called out.
"Ready!" boomed Chicago's response from upstairs, filled with youthful vigor.
Then she changed into her clothes and raced down the stairs with a flurry of steps.
"What's the goal?" Darwin asked her.
"100 percent!" Chicago replied without hesitation, her cute face ablaze with determination.
"Good!" Darwin nodded. "Let's hit the books, then!"
"Uh-huh!"
Fiona and Thalassa watched the father-daughter duo head to the study.
"What's the deal?" Thalassa looked puzzled. "They made up?"
"Obviously." Fiona laughed and plopped down on the couch. "Having a dad around makes my life much easier."
"Well, Darwin's on top of things. There are too many deadbeat dads out there who wouldn't even look after their kids if their lives depended on it." Thalassa joined Fiona on the couch, slumping down next to her. "Next month, Kenny's taking me home to meet his folks."
Fiona turned to look at her. Over the past few days, she had closely followed the sweet details of Thalassa and Kenny's blossoming romance.
"Nervous, huh? You've been preparing gifts for his family for a while now, haven't you?" Fiona teased with a smile.
"It's my first time meeting the parents, and you know how intimidating Kenny's family background is. I wouldn't have dared if it weren't for my heartbreak that day and cutting ties with my mom, totally falling apart," Thalassa muttered, then leaned happily against Fiona's shoulder. "Kenny says his family is looking forward to meeting me."
There was a brief pause before Thalassa continued, "Babe, I didn't realize until after I married Kenny how important a healthy and normal love life is to a person."
Fiona was momentarily taken aback.
A healthy, average romance...
Well, it had been years since she had any of that with Darwin!
"After marrying Kenny, you've changed. You’re visibly happier and more beautiful, with a sparkle in your eyes every day," Fiona pondered. "Remember how miserable you were with that jerk, binging night after night? How long has it been since I've seen you touch a drink?"
"Right?" Thalassa beamed, "Honestly, I feel prettier lately; my skin's so good I don't even need foundation."
Fiona burst into laughter, prompting Thalassa to suddenly become shy and cling to her arm, acting coquettishly.
