Chapter 18
After a moment, Fiona got into the car. It was Darwin's car, and his assistant, Jackie, was driving.
Throughout the journey, Jackie expressed everyone's concern for her and his anger toward Donald's actions.
Twenty minutes later, the car arrived at the entrance of Fiona's apartment building. Jackie got out of the car and offered to hold an umbrella for Fiona. Fiona smiled and took the umbrella, saying, "My right hand is fine."
Jackie looked at Fiona with concern and said, "Mr. Darwin said you can take a few days off."
"No, I want to finish handing over the work quickly." Fiona shook her head.
Jackie felt somewhat helpless. Fiona nodded and was about to leave.
"Ms. Fiona!" Jackie called out to her.
Fiona turned around and asked, "Is there something else?"
"Mr. Darwin is actually very worried about you," Jackie said, as if afraid Fiona wouldn't believe him. He added, "I'm serious!"
Of course, Fiona believed it.
One would naturally developed some attachment to a thing that one keep by one's side for five years.
Moreover, she was a substitute for Darwin's first love. She was obedient and well-behaved.
Despite so, none of it mattered. It didn't hold any meaning.
Jackie watched Fiona go upstairs and then made a phone call.
"Yes, she arrived safely. Ms. Fiona said she doesn't want to rest and wants to finish the handover quickly... Anything else? She didn't mention anything else."
Jackie trembled as he felt his boss' anger, even though there was a phone separating them.
Fiona returned home and collapsed on the bed, exhausted and didn't want to move. She really wanted to take a deep sleep, but her left hand was in constant pain. Thinking about it, Fiona became furious. It was all Darwin's fault for suddenly appearing. Otherwise, she would have definitely grabbed a piece of glass and slashed that bastard Donald's face."
Early the next day, Fiona carefully dressed herself. Jackie, the assistant, called.
"Ms. Fiona, Mr. Darwin is going on a business trip for seven days, and Ms. Bella will be accompanying him. There is no need for you to come to the office for the handover."
Fiona stayed silent.
She couldn't help but think that Darwin had done this on purpose.
Fine, if she didn't have to go, then she wouldn't go. She would use this time to move houses instead. Fiona owned two properties, both luxurious apartments in prime locations. They were gifts from Darwin. He also bought a villa in Serene City. Fiona had no intention of living in any of these houses.
Once she finished her work, she would sell them all for cash. The current house she lived in should be under Darwin's name. When she first moved in with him, he arranged for her to live here. She had been here for five years. Fiona's hand was injured, so packing her luggage was impossible. She had already made an appointment with an moving team to come and pack her things the day after tomorrow, explaining her situation beforehand.
As for where to move...
"The three-bedroom apartment my dad left me. I had wanted to move back there a long time ago," Ashton mumbled on the phone.
"Didn't you say that your stepfamily has been treating you well?" Fiona asked.
"No matter how well they treat me, he’s not my real father." Ashton didn't seem too eager to discuss this. "Anyway, you can move in first. Once I convince my mom, I'll move in with you immediately!"
"Alright. I'll pay you rent accordingly."
"Forget it. I don't need your money. Let's just leave it at that for now." Ashton hung up the phone.
Fiona looked around, sighing softly. It was rare to have some free time. Fiona planned to watch a movie. However, just as she sat down, her phone rang again. It was the site manager for the infrastructure project. Fiona answered the call.
"Ms. Fiona, we're having some conflicts with the local residents regarding compensation issues. I would like to consult the company again."
Fiona frowned. "Land compensation, compensation for occupation of houses, and other humanitarian compensations were clearly stated in the project plan, weren't they?"
"It was clear in the project plan, but there are still many irreconcilable variables once we arrived at the site," the manager said in a deep voice.
"They demanded a higher price?"
"It seems so. We're halfway through the second phase of the project, and some villagers claimed that we disturbed their ancestors' graves..."
"How much are they asking for?"
"They currently say they don't want money. They just want us to relocate. But you see, we've already invested a lot of money in this project, and changing the location is not an easy task."
"If they don't want money, it means they're unsatisfied with the amount you proposed."
The land was already fenced off before construction started.
These people couldn't have suddenly discovered their ancestors' graves were there halfway through the second phase of the project.
It was clear that they were trying to set a trap and extort money in advance.
"I will check with the company while you keep them at bay first," Fiona said.
"Got it."
Hanging up the phone, Fiona brought her computer over and opened the files related to the project. In the planning area for phase two of the project, there are no trees or houses, just a vast grassland. I haven't heard of any graves within the area. She faintly sensed that something was off. Afterward, she organized the feedback from the person in charge into a report and sent it to the manager in charge. It didn't take long. Her phone rang again.
This time, it was an unknown number with the location identified as the Capital.
She answered.
The voice on the other end made Fiona instinctively frowned.
"Ms. Fiona."
"Mr. Wyatt, what's the matter?" Fiona asked coldly.
"Ms. Fiona, the other day was just a slip of the tongue. Are you still mad at me?" Wyatt sounded helpless.
"If there’s nothing else, I’ll hang up."
"Aren't you supposed to be handing over the New Port infrastructure project to me?" Wyatt hastily said.
Fiona furrowed her brows,.“You’re the one taking over?”
"Regardless, I am the general manager of the Solomon project department. Surprised?" Wyatt's tone implied frustration.
Fiona didn’t respond to his statement.
"I've written down the main issues in the report," Fiona said.
"Have you visited the construction site?" Wyatt asked.
"I've been there twice," Fiona answered.
"It is in a remote area where we have less oversight. Without anyone overseeing, the people below might run into problems," Wyatt said. "Ms. Fiona, maybe I still need you to come with me to New Port and handle the personnel there."
Fiona frowned.
Wyatt also felt that there was more to the village disturbance than what meets the eye.
"When should we go?"
"I still have some matters to attend to in the capital. How about next Thursday?”
"Mr. Wyatt, today is Wednesday,” Fiona said helplessly. “Forget it, let me finish my work first and then I’ll go."
"That works," Wyatt agreed.
With nothing else to say, Fiona hung up the phone. Over the next two days. Fiona packed her belongings and moved in one go. That night, Fiona fulfilled her promise to treat Ashton to a nice meal. When they met, Ashton only then learned that Fiona had been injured. He was extremely anxious. Fiona explained the whole situation to her. Ashton exclaimed that he wish he could go to the kitchen and borrow a knife from the chef to chop that bastard Donald in the detention center.
"This counts as a work injury! Your boss should compensate you!"
