Chapter 661 Childhood Sweethearts
Stella's words elicited laughter from Fiona.
"They won't mind, surely. Once Mr. Durham is feeling better, I'll take them to visit him at the hospital," Fiona said, pausing. "Speaking of Mr. Durham, if it weren't for him back then, my kids wouldn't be here today. He's their hero."
Just the thought of Wyatt narrowly escaping death again stirred up anger in Fiona.
Fiona lingered at the hospital a bit longer before finally leaving.
Wyatt regained consciousness that night.
However, Wyatt was still a bit groggy, so Fiona arranged for him to be transferred to another hospital under Solomon's supervision.
The following day, the Durham family boarded Darwin's private plane and safely headed home.
When they arrived at the hotel to rest, Wyatt asked Stella to call the Darwins.
"It's late, you just woke up. Can't it wait until tomorrow?" Stella complained after hanging up.
Wyatt glanced at Stella. "How many times have you been crying? Your eyes are so puffy."
"I haven't cried. Don't spread rumors!" Stella stubbornly denied.
Afterwards, Stella fell silent.
Earlier, Stella had met Wyatt's family.
Wyatt's parents were pleasant, but Stella could sense their dissatisfaction with her.
They likely weren't pleased with how she had caused trouble during her relationship with Wyatt, and Stella's recent reputation wasn't stellar.
Moreover, Stella was also an illegitimate child who preferred to keep a low profile.
Perhaps that was why, despite reconnecting with Wyatt and becoming regular bed partners, they kept their relationship hidden.
"I had intended to rush back to celebrate your birthday with you, but I ended up missing it," Wyatt said with a tinge of regret. "Would you like me to make it up to you later or make next year's celebration even grander?"
'Next year?' Stella thought to herself with a hint of self-deprecation.
Given Wyatt's current condition, he might still be in the hospital by then. His parents or grandparents might just give her a check and advise her to leave town.
But despite the circumstances, Stella still replied, "Next year."
Even though her hope seemed bleak, Stella wanted to cling to the possibility.
'If Wyatt breaks his promise next year, I'll give him an earful' she vowed to herself.
Wyatt was still easily fatigued.
After speaking a few words, his eyelids grew too heavy to keep open.
Before drifting off, he struggled to grip Stella's hand firmly. "Okay, let's celebrate next year."
Stella gazed at Wyatt's hands, marked with distinct bones and scars, her eyes feeling tired and swollen.
Stella had grown up in a dysfunctional family, lacking a complete understanding of love and values. If she were more mature, she wouldn't have caused trouble for Wyatt or parted ways with him, given how much she adored him in the past.
Soon, Fiona and Darwin entered the room.
After resting his eyes for a bit, Wyatt felt much better.
Upon seeing them, he got straight to the point. "This time, I got dragged into trouble because of you two. I won't thank you, but let's discuss compensation when I'm feeling better."
Fiona nodded. "Fair enough."
Seeing Fiona's seriousness, Wyatt chuckled helplessly. "Anyway, I called you two here to discuss the person who hit me with the car and someone whose sketch was released based on your descriptions. They bear a striking resemblance."
The night Wyatt left, news of a family massacre had spread online and on TV.
He recognized Alexander and Sebastian from before and realized the victims were from their families, which alarmed him.
Examining the sketches, he tried to recall if he had encountered these individuals.
After pondering for a while, he couldn't recollect.
Then, anxious to return in time for Stella's birthday, he hurriedly drove back.
When Wyatt drove past the accident site, he proceeded cautiously, given the challenging road conditions, so he was driving slowly.
Suddenly, as he approached the accident spot, a car emerged from a small road, catching him off guard.
Instinctively, Wyatt swerved the steering wheel, causing the car to crash through the guardrail and tumble down the cliff.
Thankfully, he hadn't been driving at high speed.
Had he been going any faster, he wouldn't have had to wait until the next day for someone to find him; he might not have survived.
Shortly after the accident, someone arrived at his car. In Wyatt's peripheral vision, he glimpsed someone shining a flashlight into the driver's seat.
From that angle, Wyatt caught sight of the person's face.
Having seen him before setting off, Wyatt immediately recognized the man with the scar on his brow, resembling the portrait.
He reached for the dash cam.
The glint of a knife in the man's hand caught Wyatt's weakening breath; still, he pretended to be unconscious.
But the man had no intention of leaving Wyatt alone.
He raised his knife for another strike.
Suddenly, a bright light appeared nearby, illuminating the scene.
Alerted, the man halted his attack, stowed away the dash cam, crouched down, and swiftly vanished into the darkness.
Later, Wyatt learned that it was a forest ranger who had heard the commotion and come to investigate, ultimately saving his life.
"Wyatt, take care of yourself. I'll find the person who harmed you," Darwin declared solemnly.
Wyatt trusted him implicitly. "Why did this incident cause such a stir, to the extent that my parents couldn't even take a regular flight back?" he inquired.
Fiona spoke up, explaining the Hathaway massacre case.
In the past few days, Darwin and his team had verified Annie's account of the massacre.
Wyatt sighed bitterly. "It's unfortunate that a past event from six years ago can still haunt us."
"Hathaway?" Stella's expression darkened. "She nearly had you killed? No, I'm going to find her!"
"She's already dead," Fiona stated calmly.
Stella looked taken aback. "I saw her in London six months ago! She looked sick, like she was on drugs or something. Completely emaciated and aged. But if she's dead, then who's behind these recent massacres?"
"Clearly, someone is seeking vengeance for her," Darwin replied coldly, regarding Stella as if she were naive.
However, Stella couldn't grasp Darwin's expression at all.
"Hathaway was abandoned by the Ross family long ago. Could her childhood sweetheart be the one going on a killing spree for her?" Stella speculated earnestly.
"Childhood sweetheart?" Fiona and Darwin both exclaimed simultaneously.
"Yes, didn't you know?" Stella said, retrieving her phone and searching for a moment.
Finally, she found a photo. "Robert, technically. His family has had a century-long feud with the Hathaway family. My brother went to the same prestigious school as Robert and Hathaway when they were kids. He used to come home and tell me about Robert and Hathaway dating or something like that. They were only six or seven at the time." "
