Chapter 101 Paternity Test
Lillian leaned against Joshua's chest, coughed twice, and said, "I'm not afraid of any test! Joshua, let's go now and do the paternity test. If I can't clear my name today, then living is meaningless for me."
Before she could finish speaking, Lillian seemingly closed her eyes, looking as if she was about to faint.
"Mom! What's going on with you?" Sherry shouted.
She rushed over, knelt beside her, and anxiously shook Lillian's body. "Mom, don't scare me! Don't leave me, please!"
Joshua also panicked and then called out, "Lillian! Lillian, wake up..."
Lillian closed her eyes completely, pretending to lose consciousness.
Sherry could tell that Lillian was faking it and wasn't worried at all. To cooperate with Lillian, she cried out in a resentful tone. "Dad, at this point, do you still not believe Mom? Katherine came back just to stir up trouble in our family! Haven't you noticed that every time she comes home, she causes chaos? If something happens to Mom today, I don't want to live either!"
Joshua was flustered. Looking at Sherry crying so hard and then turning to Katherine who stood there indifferent, he tended to side with the pitiful Lillian and Sherry.
So, he angrily shouted, "Katherine, what are you standing there for? Call an ambulance! Do you want to see Lillian die because of you?"
At this moment, Katherine felt a cold sense of irony and found it quite laughable.
No wonder Lillian was so confident in Joshua's love for them. The fact had proven that a few tears from them would make him feel heartbroken.
Lillian and Sherry had so many issues, yet Joshua always remembered their good sides, forgiving, believing, and pampering them repeatedly.
But for Katherine who was raised in the countryside, he was harsh and intolerant of any flaws. She couldn't make a single mistake. If he were dissatisfied with her, he would completely negate her, no matter how well or excellently she usually performed.
Wasn't this the privilege of the favored ones?
Katherine said nothing and called 911 for an ambulance.
At the hospital.
The emergency doctor said that Lillian's head had only a minor scratch, nothing serious, and just needed some disinfecting and wound care.
However, Lillian pretended to feel very dizzy and nauseous. Sherry insisted that Lillian was seriously injured, strongly demanding hospitalization for observation!
The doctor, feeling helpless, said that the patient had a minor concussion and that the nausea was normal. If they insisted on hospitalization, he would arrange it.
Seeing Lillian constantly complaining of pain, Joshua was also worried about her injury and asked the doctor to arrange for hospitalization.
In the ward, Lillian took some anti-inflammatory and pain relief medication and fell asleep.
Joshua sat beside her, nervously holding her hand, afraid she might feel any discomfort.
Sherry, seeing that her parents had basically reconciled, smiled smugly to herself.
Then, she turned her head and looked at Katherine who had been standing by. She coldly snorted, accusing her, "Katherine, today was supposed to be a good day! If you hadn't come back, we would be happily having breakfast at home right now! But as soon as you came back, you dragged the whole family to the hospital and made my mom stay here! What are you really up to?"
Katherine, with a calm expression, replied, "I remember the doctor just said that Lillian only had a minor scratch and didn't need to be hospitalized. Isn't it you who insisted on staying here?"
Sherry, gritting her teeth in anger, pointed at her and shouted, "You're still arguing!"
"Stop arguing! Lillian needs to rest now!" Joshua turned around and gave Katherine an irritated look. "Katherine, if you have nothing else to do, just leave! Don't stay here and upset Lillian when she wakes up."
Hearing Joshua side with her and tell Katherine to leave, Sherry immediately smiled smugly.
‘Katherine is impossible to take away Joshua's love and trust from me and Lilian.’ Sherry thought.
With a triumphant look, Sherry mouthed the words to Katherine. "Serves you right!"
Katherine, however, didn't care about Sherry's arrogant attitude and had no intention of leaving. She calmly reminded Joshua, "Didn't you say you were going to do a paternity test with Sherry? Since we're already at the hospital, I want to wait and see the results before I go."
Joshua darkened his face and frowned, and then retorted, "How dare you still bring up the paternity test? If it weren't for you causing all this today, Lillian wouldn't be lying here now!"
Sherry seized the opportunity to fan the flames and shouted, "Dad, see? Katherine is just here to cause trouble!"
At this moment, Lillian slowly opened her eyes and regained consciousness, weakly saying, "Joshua, Katherine is right."
Hearing her voice, Joshua immediately turned to her and held her shoulders with concern, asking, "Lillian, you're awake! Are you feeling any better?"
Lillian, with red eyes and a look of feigned strength, said, "Joshua, I'm fine. Katherine's reminder is correct. Since we're already at the hospital, you and Sherry should go ahead and do the paternity test!"
Joshua, filled with guilt and concern, said, "Lillian, enough! There's no need for a paternity test. I believe you!"
Lillian, struggling a bit, interrupted him, "Joshua, I know you care about me and Sherry. That's exactly why I should completely dispel any doubts in your mind. I don't want any more rifts in our family! Go ahead and do it, just to clear my name in front of Katherine."
At the sight of his understanding and self-sacrificing wife, Joshua felt even more heartbroken and regretful for ever doubting her.
Lillian then instructed her daughter, "Sherry, listen to me. Take your father to do the paternity test, and make sure it's expedited!"
Sherry understood Lillian's intention and nodded in agreement but was still worried, then inquired, "But... if Dad and I leave, what will you do alone?"
Lillian forced a weak smile and then said, "Katherine is still here. She will stay and take care of me!"
Sherry glanced at Katherine with disdain and sneered. "Her? We'd be lucky if she doesn't harm you. How could she take good care of you?"
Lillian, always playing the good person in front of Joshua, sternly scolded her daughter, "Sherry, don't talk about your sister like that! Besides, this is a hospital. Katherine won't do anything to me!"
Finally, under Lillian's strong insistence, Joshua agreed to go for the paternity test.
Before leaving, Joshua sternly warned Katherine, "Take good care of Lillian. If I come back and find anything wrong with her, I won't let you off!"
Katherine obediently nodded and answered, "Yes. Don't worry, I understand."
Not long after Sherry and Joshua left the ward, Lillian sat up and began to laugh heartily. Her laughter was full of energy. She was nothing like the weak patient she had just been.
"Katherine, how does it feel? Did you really think I would be afraid of a paternity test?" Lillian mocked.
