Chapter 428 Misunderstood Scarlett
Scarlett calmed down and defended her mom. "Bernard, don't jump to conclusions about Mom! Saffron's good for circulation and beauty. Mom doesn't know much about medicine; she just thought more would be better. She meant well by adding it to the pomegranate juice. She didn't mean any harm!"
Good intentions? Her "good intentions" almost made Katherine drink something harmful to her and the baby! And it already put Sunny in the hospital!
Bernard looked at Scarlett, who kept making excuses for Alice, and felt a new level of disgust for his spoiled sister.
Someone knocked on the ward door.
It was the doctor who had given them the test report earlier. He had returned.
"By the way, I forgot to return something to Miss Mitchell!"
The doctor walked straight to Scarlett, pulled a bank card from his coat pocket, and handed it to her with a serious look. "Sorry, Miss Mitchell, our hospital doesn't accept money from family members or alter test results. I took your card earlier to avoid any interference. Now that I'm done, I can return it."
Scarlett's face went pale.
She didn't take the card. She couldn't!
If she took it, her pure image would be shattered!
But she couldn't think of an excuse.
Bernard took the card from the doctor, confirming it was Scarlett's, with her name on it.
For a moment, Bernard's eyes were filled with disappointment and anger as he glared at the pale-faced Scarlett. "You've even learned to bribe doctors?!"
Scarlett snapped back to reality and shook her head in panic. "No, it's not like that. Bernard, I just wanted the doctor to take good care of Sunny. As his sister, I was too worried, so I gave him money."
Seeing her still lying, Bernard's disappointment turned into disdain. He snorted. "Then you should have given the money to Sunny's attending doctor, not the one testing the pomegranate juice!"
Caught by Bernard, Scarlett was speechless. "Bernard, I..."
Bernard threw the card on the ground in utter disappointment!
He originally thought the pomegranate juice incident was all Alice's doing, that she acted out of jealousy to harm Katherine's unborn child, and that Scarlett was just defending her mom out of loyalty. He believed Scarlett had nothing to do with it.
However, this card proved that Scarlett not only knew about it but also supported it!
This was the sister he had pampered since childhood! She had so many schemes and could act so innocent?
Scarlett knew she had deeply disappointed Bernard. She quickly moved closer, trying to act pitifully and seek his sympathy as she used to. "Bernard... you really misunderstood me. It's not what you think..."
Bernard pushed her away in disgust. "Even now, you won't admit your mistake? Why should I believe anything you say!"
Scarlett felt her world crumbling as she was pushed away, tears streaming down her face. Desperate for Bernard's sympathy, she cried, "Bernard... why don't you care about me anymore? You said you'd always care about me..."
Bernard didn't want to deal with her anymore, not even wanting to look at her. Seeing her only reminded him of how blind he'd been to pamper such a scheming sister for so many years.
"Calm down," Katherine said, handing Bernard a bottle of water.
Bernard was taken aback, feeling a mix of surprise and guilt. His heart was filled with remorse. Today, he had seen Scarlett's true colors. How could he not think back to the previous conflicts between Scarlett and Katherine?
He had almost always sided with Scarlett, speaking harshly and misunderstanding Katherine, who he didn't know was his biological sister. Now, he realized Scarlett might have orchestrated those incidents to make him misunderstand.
Shame, such shame!
Bernard felt too ashamed to take the water, but he couldn't reject this rare gesture of goodwill from Katherine. In the end, he took the bottle, looking at her with a complex and apologetic expression.
"Katherine, aren't you angry about what they did to you?" Bernard asked.
Katherine smiled slightly. "Why should I be angry? I didn't drink the pomegranate juice, and they didn't harm me successfully."
Bernard gave a bitter smile, wanting to hug Katherine to show support and protection. But he knew he no longer had the right.
Katherine then said calmly, "With all due respect, I think you misunderstood Scarlett."
Bernard paused, looking at her intently. "Katherine, what do you mean by that?"
Scarlett was also stunned, her crying momentarily halted, looking at Katherine in surprise and wariness. She didn't know what Katherine was going to say to Bernard, feeling very cautious.
Katherine took a sip of the water, then handed the half-full bottle to Alex beside her, her movements smooth and natural. She took a few steps forward, looking at the tear-streaked Scarlett with gentle eyes, and said, "Look, Scarlett is crying so much, it's really pitiful.
