Chapter 237 Where Did Their Child Come From?

Alex said flatly, "No, it was just served."

Bernard smiled, and soon everyone began eating without much conversation.

Scarlett, in a good mood, cut a piece of cherry foie gras and fed it to Alex with a sweet smile.

"Alex, you have to try this foie gras. It's way better than the one we had in France. It just melts in your mouth!" she said.

Alex replied, "Thanks, but no, you eat it."

He didn't even look at her, just focused on his steak, chewing slowly.

Scarlett's smile froze, her hand paused mid-air. Feeling awkward, she placed the foie gras on the edge of Alex's plate. "Alex, you should really try it. Trust me, it's delicious!"

He only grunted, still focused on his steak without touching the foie gras.

BWatching Scarlett's humble gesture, Bernard felt uneasy, his expression darkened.

He felt sorry for Scarlett but couldn't do much. She was infatuated with this unromantic guy!

Suppressing his displeasure, Bernard spoke up, "What kind of foie gras is so good? You didn't let me try it!"

Scarlett's embarrassment eased, and she smiled, cutting a bit of foie gras and placing it on Bernard's plate.

"Here! Bernard, you try it too. Isn't it delicious?"

Bernard smiled, picked up his knife and fork, and sampled the foie gras Scarlett offered, nodding in approval. "It does taste good! Alex, are you sure you don't want to try it?"
Though Bernard's tone was polite, he was pressuring Alex.

Scarlett had kindly shared the foie gras; why couldn't he take a bite?!

But Alex still didn't touch the foie gras and didn't respond to Bernard's words.

"Bernard, if you have something to discuss with me, just say it," he said.

Seeing Alex's continued indifference, Bernard's brows furrowed slightly, feeling annoyed but couldn't say anything in front of Scarlett.

He turned to his sister. "Scarlett, I bought your favorite cheesecake on the way here. I forgot to bring it in. Can you go get it from the car and share it with Alex?"

He handed her the car keys.

Scarlett, being smart, knew Bernard was sending her away to talk to Alex alone.

Bernard was the most protective person in her life, even more than their parents.

Previously, Bernard had a deep conversation with her and knew she was determined to marry Alex. He finally agreed and stopped opposing their relationship.

Now that Bernard wanted to talk to Alex, it must be to finalize their marriage.

Thinking of this, Scarlett took the car keys. "Okay, I'll go get it now! Alex, wait for me to come back and have some cheesecake. It's really good!"

Alex just grunted, his expression cold.
Scarlett got up and left to get the cake.

Bernard watched her leave, then turned to Alex, his eyes stern.

"Alex, don't you think you're too cold to my Scarlett?" he scoffed.

Alex looked up. "Is this your first day knowing me?"

Bernard found himself momentarily at a loss for words.

He wasn't wrong; they'd known each other since childhood, growing up in the same circle.

Alex had always been this indifferent, never showing much warmth to anyone.

But thinking about his beloved Scarlett marrying a man who didn't know how to care for a woman, Bernard couldn't help but sigh. He didn't understand what Scarlett saw in this man!

He got straight to the point. "Alex, I know you and Scarlett secretly went abroad to adopt a child."

Alex paused slightly, then continued cutting his steak.

"And Scarlett has been going out early and coming back late to take care of that child, right?" Bernard continued.

Alex's expression remained unchanged. After swallowing the beef, he spoke, "I'm sorry for not getting the Mitchell family's consent before doing this."

Bernard snorted, "Alex, I'm not here to blame you today. Since the child is already adopted, the Mitchell family will treat him as Scarlett's own and raise him well. But it's time for you and Scarlett to define your relationship. Scarlett can't keep following you without any clarity!"
Alex looked up, raising an eyebrow. "Bernard, you seem to be mistaken. There's never been any ambiguity between your sister and me."

Bernard frowned. "No ambiguity? Then what do you call the two of you adopting a child together?"

Alex calmly put down his knife and fork, picked up a napkin, and wiped his mouth deliberately. Then he sat up straight, looking at Bernard with a firm gaze. "Scarlett is a very important lifesaver to me. I will respect her, help her, repay her, and treat her as a close friend. Beyond that, there will be nothing else between us."

Bernard sneered, "A close friend? So, you adopt a child with a so-called close friend?"

Alex picked up the glass and took a sip. "Bernard, to be honest, I also find this inappropriate. But your sister repeatedly begged me, saying she wanted to experience motherhood and asked me to accompany her to adopt a child abroad. After much consideration, I agreed."

Bernard's face darkened. "From what you're saying, it sounds like you're speaking as an outsider. Don't you know why Scarlett, at such a young age, wants to adopt a child? Alex, don't forget! My sister lost the ability to have children because of you!"

At the Mention of the reason, Alex furrowed and fell silent.
