Chapter 309 Received Mr. Ayers' Concern
Scarlett lay in the guest room, looking as pale as a ghost. Her usually angelic face twisted with an unnatural expression.
She had just finished a video call with Billy, where she watched Katherine's performance of "The Phantom of the Opera."
Shock, disbelief, and jealousy hit her hard.
Katherine's performance wasn't the disaster Scarlett had hoped for. It was amazing. The guests were cheering and clapping for her!
How could this happen?
How could Katherine, a girl from the countryside, sing opera so well? Even better than Scarlett, who had been secretly practicing for months!
This was not what Scarlett had hoped for at all!
She had hoped Katherine would mess up, anger Macus, and be dismissed.
But now, Katherine had probably earned extra points with Macus, and it was driving Scarlett crazy.
If she had known this would happen, she never would have let Katherine take her place. She should have convinced Bernard to remove Katherine from the beginning. Now, she was filled with regret.
Just then, Sophie knocked and walked in, looking concerned. "Scarlett, how's your foot? What did the doctor say?"
Scarlett quickly masked her anger with a smile. "Sophie, don't worry. The doctor said it's just a sprain. I'll be fine with some rest."
Sophie sighed in relief. "That's good. I was really worried Katherine might have hurt you badly!"
Hearing Katherine's name made Scarlett's smile falter, but she maintained her composure despite seething inside.
This was all Sophie's fault!
She had suggested letting Katherine take her place. If it weren't for her, Katherine wouldn't have had the chance to shine!
Sometimes, her best friend was more of a hindrance than a help!
But Sophie didn't notice Scarlett's resentment and continued, "Scarlett, Mr. Ayers wants to see you. He said he has something to tell you."
Scarlett, still seething over Katherine's performance, was taken aback. "What? Mr. Ayers wants to see me?"
Sophie nodded. "Yes! He loved the 'Phantom of the Opera' performance and wants to meet the performer."
Scarlett frowned, confused. "Macus wants to see the Phantom, but the Phantom wasn't..."
Sophie cut her off, "The Phantom was you, Scarlett! Remember, Katherine was singing in your place. I told him the performer was you and that it was a birthday gift you prepared for him. So, of course, he wants to see you!"
Realizing this, Scarlett's anger melted away. She had been so furious about Katherine's performance that she momentarily forgot Katherine was performing in her stead.
With this realization, Scarlett's mood instantly lifted.
Sophie wasn't entirely useless; she did have her moments. Scarlett suddenly felt a wave of gratitude and smiled warmly. "Sophie, thanks for speaking up for me in front of Mr. Ayers!"
Sophie shrugged it off. "It's nothing! We're best friends. I won't let Katherine steal your spotlight! I bet she pushed you down the stairs on purpose so she could take your place. But don't worry, I've got someone keeping an eye on her backstage. She won't get near Macus."
Scarlett felt a bit more at ease and kept up her act. "Sophie, don't be so harsh on Katherine. I don't think she did it on purpose."
"Not on purpose? That's a joke! Scarlett, you're too kind-hearted. You always see the best in people," Sophie said, genuinely believing her friend was too naive. She was determined to protect Scarlett, especially since she would be her future sister-in-law.
"Let's not talk about Katherine anymore. It's so annoying! I had someone bring a wheelchair. Your foot's injured, so I'll push you to see Macus," Sophie said.
Scarlett nodded. "Okay."
Bernard had just left, busy with something else, leaving the maids easier to handle. Seeing the wheelchair, they didn't dare stop them.
Sophie pushed Scarlett to Macus. "Mr. Ayers, I brought Scarlett to see you!"
Macus scrutinized Scarlett, who was still in stage makeup and seated in a wheelchair. He immediately noticed something was off. "Hmm? Weren't you just singing 'The Phantom of the Opera'? Why are you wearing a 'Hamilton' costume?"
Scarlett was indeed wearing a 'Hamilton' costume. The 'Phantom of the Opera' costume was with Katherine, and with her injured foot, it was too much trouble to change. She didn't want to keep Macus waiting.
But she and Sophie had already prepared a plausible explanation.
Sophie explained, "Mr. Ayers, Scarlett changed into this costume because she wanted to sing a piece from 'Hamilton' for you. But just as she changed, I called her over to see you."
Macus narrowed his eyes. "Is that so? Then why are you in a wheelchair? What's going on?"
Scarlett spoke up, looking pained, "Mr. Ayers, I'm sorry I can't stand to talk to you. It's rude. I was in a hurry to change costumes after getting off stage and ended up spraining my foot."
Macus stared at her for a moment, finally dispelling his doubts. He felt a bit of sympathy and appreciation for Scarlett, whom he had always disliked.
With a kind expression, he said gently, "Alright, I accept your kind gesture. That performance of 'The Phantom of the Opera' was very good. Now that your foot is injured, don't worry about singing 'Hamilton.' You can perform it for us when you're healed."
