Chapter 648 I Have Other Matters to Attend To

Katherine found it pretty funny. "Move for you? Am I in your way or something?"

Sophia leaned in close. "I mean you're getting in the way of my love life."

Katherine's eyes went cold, like she just heard a bad joke. "Your love life ain't my problem."

Sophia was about to say something when she spotted Jonathan behind Katherine and grinned. "Jonathan, what brings you here?"

Jonathan strolled over, gave Katherine a quick glance, then smiled at Sophia. "Just made a call. What are you two chatting about?"

Sophia looked between Jonathan and Katherine, as if she just had figured something out, and her smile got all sly. "Katherine's really into the paintings in the hall. I'm worried about her wandering around with her big belly, but I gotta entertain the guests. Jonathan, why don't you take her for a walk?"

Jonathan smiled warmly. "Sure, I got this!"

"Alright, you two have fun." With that, Sophia smoothly blended into the crowd to toast.

Watching Sophia fade away, Jonathan finally looked at Katherine. "Didn't you say you were going to the restroom? Why'd you end up here alone?"

Katherine shot back, "After the restroom, can't I walk around? Do I have to go back and get gossiped about?"

Jonathan shrugged with a grin. "You saw it. I wasn't gossiping about you."

Katherine found Jonathan more tolerable now, since he was her benefactor.

Katherine asked, "Are they annoying you too?"

Jonathan chuckled, "A bit."

Katherine nodded. "I can tell."

Jonathan glanced at her feet. She was in a dress but had wisely chosen flat shoes over heels.

"Didn't you wanna see the paintings? Come on, I'll go with you." Jonathan nodded for her to lead the way.

Katherine frowned, annoyed. "You don't need to tag along. If people see you with a pregnant woman like me, they'll start talking. I can handle it; go hang with your friends."

Jonathan was unfazed. "I don't mind."

Katherine said, "I don't wanna be the center of attention!"

Jonathan smiled. "Everyone's having a blast, no one's watching us. Let's go, I'll walk with you. If you twist your ankle, it won't be good."

Katherine looked around. People were indeed having a great time. Sophia had a popular rock band playing, so no one would notice them.

Seeing Jonathan's stubbornness, it was clear he wouldn't leave.

Katherine didn't argue anymore and walked ahead, letting Jonathan follow beside her.

Jonathan was super attentive, always ready to steady her when they hit a crowd, making sure no one bumped into her.

Meanwhile, in a quiet spot on the stairs, Alex was watching them with a cold stare.

Sophia handed Alex a cocktail. "Alex, are Katherine and Jonathan tight? They seem pretty close."

Alex squinted. "Why do you think so?"

Sophia leaned on the railing, looking down at Katherine. "Katherine's usually cold to everyone, but she's all friendly with Jonathan. They seem to have a lot to chat about."

Alex's fingers tightened around his glass, like he might shatter it any second.

Sophia was about to say more, but Alex suddenly turned and headed down the stairs. She chased after him. "Alex, where are you going?"

"Enjoy yourself. I got something to handle." Alex walked at a steady pace, but there was a chilling vibe that made people think twice about following.

Sophia didn't chase him; she just watched him go, her smile slowly fading.

After wandering the banquet hall, Katherine still hadn't found Lotus's portrait and was getting frustrated. The noisy rock music and flashing lights weren't helping either.

"What's up? Didn't find the painting? Feeling bummed?" Jonathan noticed her mood and leaned in to ask softly.

Katherine sighed, "It's too loud here, and I'm thirsty. Can you grab me some juice? Thanks!"

The drinks area was even noisier, and just looking at it made Katherine dizzy; she didn't want to go over.

Jonathan smiled. "Wait here. I'll get you a bottle of water."

Even though there was juice in the drinks area, it might have some alcohol. Katherine was pregnant and couldn't risk it, so water from the hotel front desk was safer.

Katherine nodded and waited. Maybe it was the pregnancy, but she felt suffocated in the noisy environment. Her vision got blurry, and she tried blinking to clear her head. But then everything went black, and she felt herself falling backward. She just hoped the baby would be okay.

Katherine tried to control her body, but she had no strength left. Just when she thought she'd hit the ground hard, a pair of warm hands caught her shoulders from behind. Then, she felt like she was being carried somewhere.

When she woke up, she saw a ceiling close above her, smelled a faint scent of tobacco and a hint of alcohol.

As she regained some clarity, she looked around and found herself in the back seat of a car, lying down. But she wasn't alone; her head was resting on a man's lap.

In the dim car, Alex's figure was unclear, startling Katherine. She immediately sat up. "Who are you?"

Alex looked at her, feeling a jumble of emotions he couldn't put into words.
