Chapter 400 How Old Are You?
The Mitchell family's butler, Finn Grant, followed Vincent's orders and waited at the door with the staff to welcome the guest.
As soon as the car stopped and Katherine was about to open the door, Finn beat her to it, bowing deeply. "Ms. Galatea, welcome. Mr. Vincent Mitchell is waiting for you inside."
Katherine felt a bit awkward with the grand welcome.
Following Finn into the living room, Vincent, who was sipping coffee, immediately put down his cup and smiled. "Katherine! Come, have a seat!"
Katherine walked over and said politely, "Sir, you didn't need to send someone to greet me. I'm just here to see you."
Vincent, kind but stubborn, insisted, "A benefactor is here; we had to greet you properly! Katherine, don't be so formal. Sit down! Finn, get her some tea!"
"Yes," Finn replied, bowing and instructing the staff to serve tea.
Katherine sat next to Vincent and thanked the servant who brought her tea.
Vincent cheerfully called out, "Hellen , the benefactor is here! Come out and see!"
After a moment, an elderly lady in a dress slowly emerged from the study. "Is the benefactor here? Where?"
Vincent introduced Katherine, "Just arrived. This is her!"
Hellen, dignified and elegant, stared at Katherine, her expression frozen.
Katherine stood up to greet her. "Hello, Mrs. Mitchell."
Hellen continued to stare, unable to snap out of it.
Katherine's polite smile faded, feeling uncomfortable.
Vincent noticed and cleared his throat. "Hellen, the guest is greeting you!"
Hellen snapped out of it and smiled apologetically. "Oh, hello. You must be Katherine. Vincent often talks about you."
Katherine smiled lightly. " Yes, I am Katherine."
Hellen sat beside Vincent. "Katherine, please sit down. No need to be so formal!"
Katherine sat down again, took a sip of tea, and subtly observed Hellen.
Despite her graying temples, Hellen's features were beautiful, hinting at her stunning youth.
Vincent's gentle and respectful attitude towards Hellen showed their good relationship.
Katherine and Hellen observed each other.
Katherine used her peripheral vision, making it less noticeable.
Hellen, however, stared directly at her, scrutinizing her before speaking. "Katherine, I appreciate you stepping in when Vincent was being bullied. Not many young people are that brave nowadays."
Katherine modestly shook her head. "It was just a small effort. You and Mr. Mitchell are too kind."
Hellen admired Katherine's polite and humble demeanor and smiled kindly. "May I ask, Katherine, how old are you?"
Katherine replied calmly, "I'm twenty."
Hellen seemed to be calculating something and then asked, "Which month is your birthday?"
Katherine was taken aback and became wary. Why did Hellen want to know her birth month? Could she have figured something out?
After a moment, she answered naturally, "After my mom passed away, no one celebrated my birthday, so I don't even know which month it is."
Hellen's doubt seemed to grow. "Your mother wasn't around when you were young? Did she pass away or just leave and never come back?"
Katherine's face darkened, and she fell silent.
Hellen's question made her unhappy. Why did she grow up without a mother? Wasn't it because the Mitchell family's distrust drove her and her mother away, leading to their separation and her mother's unknown fate?
Vincent noticed Katherine's silence and felt heartbroken. He nudged Hellen, "Why are you asking this? You're bringing up sad memories for her!"
Hellen realized her mistake and quickly apologized, "I'm sorry, Katherine. You just look very familiar, like a child I knew long ago. If I brought up unhappy memories, it's my fault."
Katherine forced a smile. "It's okay. Mrs. Mitchell just mistook me for someone else."
Hellen picked up a piece of apple from the fruit plate and handed it to her. "Katherine, have some fruit. We'll have a simple lunch, and in the evening, Vincent has ordered fresh ingredients for dinner. Stay for dinner before you leave."
Katherine agreed. "Alright, thank you for the hospitality."
Hellen changed the subject, "By the way, Katherine, I heard from Vincent that you married into the Melville family?"
Katherine nodded. "Yes, sort of."
Hellen frowned. "Such a good child. How did you end up marrying into their family? What a pity! If you were still single, Vincent and I could introduce you to many excellent young men!"
No wonder they were a couple; both liked to play matchmaker.
Katherine smiled lightly. "I appreciate the kindness from you and Mr. Mitchell. I'm doing well in the Melville family, so there's no need to trouble you with my matters."
Vincent grumbled, "Look at that! Old Alex got such a good wife, and our Bernard still doesn't even have a girlfriend!"
Hellen advised, "Alright, Bernard has his ideas. Don't push him too hard. He'll bring you a granddaughter-in-law sooner or later!"
Vincent got angrier. "When is 'sooner or later'? When I'm dead?"
Hellen smiled helplessly. "There you go again! Katherine is here; why are you throwing a tantrum? Alright, you chat with Katherine for a while. I'll go bake some cookies I just learned for Katherine to try!"
"Katherine, Hellen is going to bake cookies for you. How about Grandpa takes you for a walk in the garden first?"
"Okay." Katherine was happy to take a walk around the Mitchell estate; she might find some new clues.
Hellen went to the kitchen while Vincent took Katherine to the garden.
In the shadows, a sneaky servant dashed upstairs!
