Chapter 591 Zip It
Katherine smirked and popped the shrimp he peeled for her into her mouth without a second thought. "You know I can't stand you, yet here you are!"
Jonathan handed her another peeled shrimp. "That's exactly why I gotta step up my game, so you'll start liking me!"
Not used to being fed, Katherine grabbed a fork and took the shrimp herself, munching on it.
Jonathan just grinned. "Wanna know what's up with the Melville family now?"
Katherine hesitated, staying silent.
She'd been avoiding her phone and any contact with Frank or Ambrosia all day, worried Alex's crew might track her down using some high-tech satellite stuff.
She had no clue about the Melville family's current situation, but she figured they were probably flipping out and searching for her everywhere since she was carrying their kid.
Not wanting to dive into Melville drama, Katherine switched gears. "These shrimp are bomb. Where'd you get them? Shoot me the address later!"
Jonathan raised an eyebrow. "Even if I give you the address, you think you can just go buy them?"
Katherine shrugged. "Oh right, totally slipped my mind!"
Jonathan chuckled. "Thought you were having second thoughts and wanted to head back!"
Katherine was set on her runaway plan, no turning back.
"Enough about me. Jonathan, can I interview you?" Katherine asked.
Jonathan's eyes twinkled with amusement. "Interview me? Sure thing! What do you wanna know?"
Katherine glanced around the cozy two-bedroom apartment. "You said you grew up here, but isn't the Mostow family loaded? How come you lived in a place like this?"
Jonathan paused but kept peeling shrimp. "Didn't Alex spill the beans? I'm not actually a blood Mostow."
Katherine's eyes widened. "He didn't say a word. What's the deal? Were you adopted?"
Jonathan smiled and explained, "Yeah, kinda. Dominic Mostow is my adoptive dad. He had a son who passed away young. Dominic couldn't have more kids, so he picked an heir from his relatives' kids. I was a distant relative, orphaned and all, so they chose me and raised me as the heir. This place is where my real parents and I used to live."
'So that's the story,' Katherine thought, feeling a pang of empathy for Jonathan. 'Being picked by rich relatives sounds lucky, but he probably had to toe the line. We both grew up in someone else's world, never really fitting in.'
Katherine asked, "How old were you when the Mostow family took you in?"
Jonathan replied, "Around seven or eight, so I remember a lot about my real parents."
Katherine put down her fork, resting her chin on her hand, and gave him a look. "You're pretty chill for someone who's been through so much!"
Jonathan shrugged. "Chill? Being an heir in that family was no walk in the park. My childhood was anything but normal, and since everyone knew I was adopted, they didn't take me seriously. It was a nightmare when I first took over the company."
Katherine nodded, feeling for him. "I can imagine. Must've been rough. But look at you now! Everyone calls you Mr. Mostow with respect."
Jonathan gave a bitter smile. "Respect? Behind my back, it's a different story. Even Alex, Hilton, and Issac don't really see me as a friend. Only Bernard treats me genuinely, and that's rare."
In Katherine's mind, Bernard was the snobby one. Alex, Hilton, and Issac seemed closer, but they didn't look down on Jonathan.
With their personalities, if they really despised someone, they wouldn't even share a drink with them.
"I don't think Alex is like that. Don't overthink it," she said.
Jonathan squinted. "You're still defending Alex?"
Katherine replied honestly, "I'm not defending him, just stating the facts. If he were that snobbish, he wouldn't have been with me."
Jonathan chuckled. "But he didn't treat you well either. Otherwise, why would you go to such lengths to run away?"
'That's true! Why am I still defending Alex?' Katherine thought.
"Forget it, let's not talk about Alex! And stop peeling shrimp for me; you should eat too." Katherine's tone softened a bit towards Jonathan.
Jonathan smiled. "It's cool, I'm happy to serve you."
Katherine rolled her eyes. "I can't eat that much! And eating alone is boring."
"Alright, I'll join you." Jonathan sat down and started eating shrimp with her.
Katherine peeled her own shrimp, finding it tastier when she did it herself.
"Katherine, do you know why I think we're a good match?" Jonathan suddenly said.
Katherine, mid-peel, raised an eyebrow. "Even shrimp can't shut you up?"
Jonathan grinned. "Just eating without talking is boring!"
Katherine said, "Seems like you forgot the 'no talking' rule at the dinner table."
Jonathan smirked, realizing she was dodging the topic. But he wasn't about to give up. "Katherine, I think we're a good match because we've got similar experiences and values. Compared to you and Alex, who are like oil and water, we have more in common and more to talk about."
Katherine really didn't want to dive into feelings with Jonathan. "There are tons of people with similar backgrounds and experiences. Are they all a good match? Jonathan, if you're not gonna eat the shrimp, leave them for me and go home early!"
Jonathan smiled helplessly. "Alright, I'll zip it, okay?"
