Chapter 359 Taking Her Away, Impossible
Bernard was stunned. He couldn't wrap his head around it, but he thought a lot of Katherine's past actions didn't make sense either.
Like when she applied for a job at the Mitchell Group or crashed his grandfather's birthday party at the Ayers family.
Plus, Scarlett and the maid both saw Katherine do it. Could they be wrong?
"Bernard, I know why Katherine tried so hard to save Charles just now!" Scarlett's voice cut in, interrupting the conversation.
Everyone turned to see Scarlett walking in, eyes red from crying.
She had planned with Charles, but he freaked out when he saw her, so the medics made her leave the ambulance. She had to come back.
Seeing her alone, Bernard frowned. "Why didn't you go to the hospital? Where's Charles?"
Scarlett wiped her tears and said, "Billy's with Charles at the hospital, so I'm not worried. We can see Charles later. Right now, I want the person who hurt Charles to face justice. Otherwise, I feel too guilty as a mom."
She choked up again, looking pitiful.
After being kicked out of the ambulance, Scarlett calmed down and made a plan.
With Charles at the hospital and out of the way, she needed to get Katherine convicted of attempted murder first. Then she could deal with Charles at the hospital afterwards. Kids are easy to handle; there are plenty of ways to keep him quiet.
Seeing his sister crying, Bernard's brow furrowed with concern. "Scarlett, what do you know?"
Scarlett wiped her tears, glaring at Katherine. "Bernard, Katherine saved Charles because she got scared when we called the police. She was afraid of severe punishment if Charles died, so she changed her mind and saved him!"
Tears streamed down her face as she pleaded with the police, "Officers, I saw everything. She hit my son on the head with a chisel, and he passed out! Even if she saved him later, it doesn't erase her intent to kill him. This is attempted murder! Please bring her to justice, or my son might be in danger again! Kids' brains are still developing, and a blow like that could cause lasting damage! There can't be a next time! If my word isn't enough, our maid saw it too! Ask her!"
The maid stepped forward. "Yes, officers! I saw it too. Katherine hit Charles with a chisel!"
The police nodded. "Miss Mitchell, we understand. We'll bring the culprit to justice."
Then the officer looked sternly at Katherine. "Katherine, if you have anything to say, you can do it at the station. Come with us now!"
Katherine didn't resist, but Alex wouldn't let her go.
Alex held Katherine's shoulder firmly, not letting her move.
He looked at the officers with a strong, indifferent gaze. "If you want to take her, have your chief call me first."
The officers, recognizing Alex, looked troubled. "Mr. Melville, please don't make our job difficult. We're just following procedure."
Alex snorted coldly, raising his dark brows. "Following procedure? Based on the Mitchell family's story, you want to take my wife away as a murderer? Do you have an arrest warrant?"
What?!
This girl, Katherine, was actually Mr. Melville's wife!
The officers were now at a loss!
They thought she was just a new fling. They didn't expect her to be the legitimate Mrs. Melville!
They couldn't afford to offend her. If Katherine was innocent, the consequences would be dire for them and their entire department!
Bernard saw the police were wary of the Melville family. He frowned and stepped forward. "Alex, the police just want to question Katherine, not arrest her! If she's innocent, they'll let her go. Don't disrespect the law."
Alex gave him a cold look, and the standoff continued, making it tough for the police caught in the middle.
At that moment, Bernard's phone vibrated. He stepped aside to answer the call, seeing it was from Billy.
Worried about Charles, Bernard didn't delay. "What's wrong? How is Charles?"
Billy quickly replied, "Mr. Mitchell, the child is fine. No need to worry!"
Bernard's brow relaxed slightly. "Okay, anything else?"
Billy paused before speaking in a complicated tone, "Mr. Mitchell, Charles said Katherine didn't hurt him. I thought you should know so you don't blame Ms. Galatea by mistake."
Bernard's brow furrowed again. "Charles said that? What exactly did he say?"
Billy explained Charles's situation in detail.
After hanging up, Bernard's eyes narrowed with a complex expression. He turned around, somber, and said, "Officers, you can go back now. Today's incident was a misunderstanding. Sorry for the trouble."
Everyone was stunned by the sudden turn of events.
The police, however, breathed a sigh of relief. They had been caught between two powerful families.
If this injury was a misunderstanding and both sides were willing to settle it privately, it would save them a lot of trouble.
The lead officer waved his hand. "No problem! If anything comes up, feel free to contact us anytime!"
Bernard nodded politely. "Of course. Please see the officers out!"
The house staff promptly and courteously led the officers out.
Scarlett, full of surprise, watched the officers leave and asked reluctantly, "Bernard, why did you let the police go? Charles was really hurt on purpose today! I saw it with my own eyes. How could it be a misunderstanding?"
