Chapter 494 Have to Acknowledge the Brother-in-law

Bernard didn't want to, but he had no choice. Katherine wouldn't let him walk, and he didn't dare disobey. So, Alex had to carry him upstairs again.

At the door, Alex set him down so he could open it himself.

Bernard punched in the code. Seeing Alex about to help again, he quickly waved him off, hopped on one leg into the apartment, and plopped onto the sofa.

Alex and Katherine stood at the door, watching him settle before they left.

"Since you're here, why not come in for a drink?" Bernard called out.

Katherine felt uneasy leaving before Billy brought the caregiver, worried Bernard might try to walk if they left.

She turned to Alex, "Thirsty?"

Alex got the hint and nodded. "A bit."

"Then let's get a drink from Mr. Mitchell before we go," Katherine said.

Alex agreed and followed her into Bernard's spacious apartment, closing the door behind them.

"My foot's a mess. Help yourself in the kitchen," Bernard said.

Katherine didn't hesitate and headed to the kitchen.

As she went, Bernard glanced at Alex. "Have a seat."

Alex lounged on a single sofa, crossing his legs. "So, what happened? How'd the car hit you?"

Bernard's eyes narrowed. "Katherine was crossing the street. I checked both sides, it was clear. Then a car sped out of nowhere, no brakes, aiming for her."

Alex's eyes narrowed, deep in thought.

Bernard stared at him. "Alex, you know how tangled the Melville family's connections are. I didn't care before, but now that Katherine's with you, you have to keep her safe. Don't let her get hurt because of you."

Alex was silent for a moment. "What kind of car?"

"A gray van, license plate XXXXX," Bernard replied.

Alex nodded. "I'll find out who did it. It won't happen again."

Suddenly, a scream came from the kitchen. Both men jumped up and looked over.

Katherine ran out holding two drinks, a white Samoyed dog chasing her excitedly!

Alex quickly stepped in front of her, scolding the dog to back off.

"Raffi, come here," Bernard called. Raffi trotted over, rubbing its head against his leg.

Bernard petted Raffi and apologized, "Katherine, it's okay. Raffi's just clingy. Did it scare you?"

Katherine wasn't afraid of dogs, but the sudden appearance had startled her!

After calming down, Katherine sat back on the sofa, holding Alex's hand. "You don't live here, but you keep a dog?"

Bernard petted Raffi. "It's not mine."

Katherine raised an eyebrow. "This is your place, but Raffi isn't yours?"

Bernard explained, "A friend went abroad and couldn't take Raffi. I'm just looking after him for a while. Someone comes daily to walk and feed him. I just check in occasionally."

Katherine found it odd. Bernard usually acted only when there was something to gain. Would he really take care of someone else's dog?

"What kind of friend? Boyfriend, girlfriend?" she asked.

Bernard was momentarily stunned, then smiled. "What? Worried about my love life now?"

Katherine frowned and opened her drink. "Just curious. If you don't want to answer, forget it."

Bernard replied honestly, "A female friend."

Katherine squinted. "Girlfriend?"

Bernard shook his head. "No, just a regular friend."

Katherine sipped her drink. "I don't buy it."

Would Bernard really take care of a regular female friend's dog? There had to be more to it.

Bernard chuckled. "She's a married female friend."

Katherine frowned. "You know, breaking up someone else's family isn't cool."

Bernard sighed. "No, there's nothing going on. If I had found you a sister-in-law, would I lie to you?"

Uninterested, Katherine handed her drink to Alex, called Raffi, and went to the balcony.

Now it was just Bernard and Alex in the living room.

Bernard leaned back tiredly. "How's the Melville Group's stock market? Can you manage it?"

Alex took a sip of Katherine's drink. "It's tough but manageable."

Bernard offered some goodwill. "If you need help, let me know. I'll have Billy handle it."

Alex paused, then raised an eyebrow. "Who are you to say this? As Katherine's brother?"

"This mess started with Scarlett, causing a chain reaction. Our family also has some responsibility for the Melville Group's stock market crash," Bernard said, rubbing his temples. "If I had a choice, I wouldn't want to be your brother-in-law. But since Katherine chose you, I have to accept you."

Alex chuckled. "Bernard, don't you think you're being a bit unprincipled? You used to pressure me to take responsibility for Scarlett. Now that you know Katherine is your sister, you're treating her the same way. Do you think Katherine will buy this?"

Bernard knew he had been contradictory and felt regret. "I'm sorry. I was confused back then."
