Chapter 507 The Child is Taken Away
Scarlett insisted, "This is the only logical possibility I can think of. Otherwise, there's no way to explain why Bernard has become so concerned with Katherine! And Edwin, don't you think the way Edwin looks at Katherine and the tone he uses when talking to her are also very unusual?"
Alice shuddered at the thought of Edwin's behavior around Katherine, and remarked, "If what you're worried about is true, then we definitely can't keep Katherine around!"
A hint of ruthlessness flashed in Scarlett's eyes as she schemed, "Of course, Katherine can't stay, but it's best if we don't handle it ourselves."
"If we don't handle it ourselves, who else can we get to do it?" Alice asked.
"Mom, I've already arranged for someone to take care of Katherine. Let's not rush and wait for the results," Scarlett said.
Alice looked at her daughter in confusion, and asked, "Who is it?"
Scarlett replied, "You'll know if she gets the job done!"
Alice trusted that Scarlett wouldn't find someone unreliable for such a risky task, so she didn't ask further, "Alright, Scarlett, go out and get something to eat! Also, make sure Charles eats something. He ignores me when I talk to him, refuses to eat when I try to feed him. He's really hard to deal with!"
Scarlett looked disgusted at the thought of taking care of Charles. She claimed, "If he doesn't want to eat, then leave him be. If he starves, that's one less burden for me to carry around!"
The Mitchell family.
Katherine explained to the Mitchell family why she skipped classes in high school. She had already learned everything she needed to, and because of financial difficulties, she skipped classes to earn some living expenses.
What she said about working was true.
At that time, she had just founded the Crescent Group, which was still in its early stages and it kept her very busy. She was essentially working for herself, so it wasn't a lie.
Primarily, she wanted to keep her background private.
Although she had been accepted into several prestigious universities without taking the SAT, she still chose to attend on test day.
Initially, she hadn’t selected Janetrick University. However, the university president personally persuaded her to enroll.
She clarified these details to the Mitchell family to prevent Alice and Scarlett from using them to manipulate Hellen and Vincent.
She also told the Mitchell family about Alice and Scarlett's sending people to investigate her in the countryside and spread rumors about her online.
After hearing Katherine's detailed account, Vincent and Hellen felt both heartache and guilt.
They were saddened by the thought of her working so hard at such a young age, unable to attend school properly or study in peace...
They also felt guilty for the actions of their heartless daughter-in-law and wayward granddaughter toward Katherine...
Hellen held Katherine's small hand and said, "Katherine, Vincent and I believe everything you've said! Don't worry. We will make sure you get justice. Alice and Scarlett will be punished for this. Vincent has already sent them to the countryside to reflect on their actions!"
Vincent nodded in agreement, and sincerely apologized, "Katherine, I'm sorry you've been wronged these past few days! I won't let them off just because they're family!"
Looking at Vincent and Hellen's kind expressions, Katherine couldn't help but feel a sense of irony and coldness, remembering how they had spoken disdainfully about her mother when she first arrived.
If they knew she was the child of their most disliked former daughter-in-law, their attitude would surely be different, wouldn't it?
Katherine withdrew her hand indifferently with a faint smile, and remarked, "Thank you for believing in me."
In reality, what did their punishment for Alice and Scarlett amount to? They were merely sent to a summer villa in the countryside.
Could that really be considered a punishment?
To her, it seemed more like a vacation!
The villa had everything they could need, and they could live comfortably. The only downside might be some loneliness after a while.
Compared to the punishment the Mitchell family had given Claire back then, this was nothing!
With a polite smile but cold eyes, Katherine said, "By the way, there's something else I'd like to discuss with you."
Hellen said warmly, "Whatever it is, just say it. As long as Vincent and I can do it, we will."
Vincent echoed, "Yes! Katherine, whatever you need, just ask!"
Katherine maintained a faint smile as she spoke, "Don't get me wrong, I'm not here to make demands because of what Mrs. Alice Mitchell and Miss Mitchell did to defame me. I just want to discuss something."
Vincent and Hellen exchanged a glance, unable to guess what Katherine wanted to discuss, but they felt her attitude today was polite yet particularly distant.
Hellen said, "Katherine, go ahead. What do you want to discuss?"
In a calm tone, Katherine said, "It's like this: Miss Mitchell previously pretended to be Mr. Melville's savior and falsely claimed that she became infertile as a result of saving him, making Mr. Melville feel very guilty towards her."
Vincent had heard about this and felt deeply ashamed of Scarlett's despicable behavior. "We know about this. Katherine, do you want Scarlett to apologize or compensate you in some way?" he asked her.
Katherine shook her head in refusal, and stated, "No, we don't need Miss Mitchell's cheap apologies or compensation. However, Miss Mitchell used her supposed infertility and love for children to deceive Mr. Melville into accompanying her abroad to adopt a child whom she named Charles."
She continued, "Later, the truth came out, and everyone learned that Miss Mitchell was not infertile and could have children of her own. Moreover, from what I know, Charles has been mistreated under Miss Mitchell's watch, frequently getting injured and sick. I've also heard that since Miss Mitchell found out that Charles was no,longer useful to her, she has been neglecting him."
Katherine added, "So, I was wondering, since Miss Mitchell doesn't truly care for Charles and doesn't want to be responsible for him, could Mr. Melville take him instead? After all, Mr. Melville is also one of the child's legal guardians."
She had promised Charles she would save him, and she intended to keep that promise.
Charles reminded her of her helpless childhood...
However, after hearing what Katherine wanted to discuss, Vincent, Hellen, and Edwin all looked at her with astonished and incredulous expressions...
