Chapter 461 The Important Reason for Not Getting a Marriage License
Bernard had dealt with Katherine's stubbornness before. He sighed and asked, "What did she call you?"
Billy felt a chill. "Ms. Galatea was polite. She called me Billy."
Bernard sneered.
Billy went quiet.
With cameras in the elevator, Scarlett didn't want to give Bernard any leverage. She stayed silent.
Once in the car, Scarlett remarked sarcastically, "Katherine, you must have some skills to get Bernard to treat you so well!"
"You're too kind," Katherine yawned, bored. She told the driver, "Take me to Melville Manor first."
Scarlett glared at Katherine and snorted. "Katherine, you and Alex haven't gotten a marriage license yet, right?"
Katherine's eyes flickered, and she frowned at Scarlett.
Seeing Katherine react, Scarlett smiled. "I knew Alex wouldn't marry you! What's the point of joining the Melville family? You'll just be a temporary Mrs. Melville until they discard you."
Katherine asked seriously, "Oh? Why are you so sure he won't get a marriage license with me?"
Scarlett looked her up and down. "With your background, you can't be Mrs. Melville. Families like ours value status and compatibility!“
”Alex likes you now, but he'll get tired of you. You think having the Melville family's child will secure your position? You're mistaken!“
"They can keep the child and discard you. Alex can still marry a well-matched heiress."
"And there's a more important reason why Alex won't get a marriage license with you!"
Katherine raised an eyebrow. "What's the most important reason?"
She didn't think Alex cared about status, but he did avoid the topic of a license, which worried her.
Seeing Katherine curious, Scarlett's smile grew smug. "Seems you don't know Alex that well! I thought you were important to him! Turns out he doesn't tell you everything! Looks like I know more than you do!"
Katherine wasn't interested in competing. She frowned. "What's the important reason?"
Scarlett had found a way to get under Katherine's skin and wasn't letting go.
"Katherine, you want to know? I don't want to tell you! Ask Alex yourself! But I bet he won't tell you!"
Seeing Scarlett wouldn't spill, Katherine lost interest, turned her head, closed her eyes, and ignored her..
By the time they got to Melville Manor, it was past two in the afternoon.
Katherine stepped out of the car, and Scarlett rolled down the window to throw a few more sarcastic comments, ending with, "Good luck, Katherine," before telling the driver to leave.
Watching the car drive away, Katherine squinted. Scarlett's confidence made her wonder if she really knew why Alex didn't want to get a marriage license.
Without dwelling on it, Katherine turned and entered Melville Manor.
In the courtyard, she noticed a luxury stretch limo she hadn't seen before.
Someone was here?
A servant approached, "Ma'am, you're back! Mr. Jackie Melville and Mrs. Sandra Melville are here. They were looking for you! We told them you were out, and Mrs. Sandra was quite disappointed. You should go in quickly!"
Sandra and Jackie were back?
Katherine felt a bit nervous. She had met Sandra before, but not Jackie.
As soon as she entered the house, she heard Sandra's warm voice.
"Katherine!"
Sandra got up, full of joy. She gently grasped Katherine's arms and frowned. "Katherine, you seem to have lost weight again. This won't do. You need to eat more! I'm back for good this time, and I'll cook for you every day to make you healthy and plump!"
Katherine remembered how Sandra's soups had once disrupted her menstrual cycle and felt pressured. She forced a smile. "…Thank you."
Fiona, sitting nearby with her arms crossed, snorted jealously. "Grandma only cares about Katherine now and ignores me!"
It seemed Nathan had already finished tutoring her for the day and left.
Sandra turned and glared at her granddaughter. "I've doted on you for years, and now you're competing with Katherine for attention!"
Fiona pouted. She wasn't as hostile towards Katherine as she used to be. Seeing her grandmother treat Katherine well didn't make her as angry anymore.
Sandra led Katherine to an elderly man in a wheelchair and introduced her with a smile, "Jackie, look! This is our granddaughter-in-law! Isn't she as cute and pretty as I said?"
Katherine looked at Jackie and politely said, "Hello, Grandpa."
Jackie had a stern appearance. Even though he was in a wheelchair and looked a bit ill, his imposing aura was still intimidating.
Jackie looked at Katherine, scrutinizing her from head to toe. Finally, his gaze settled on her face, and he frowned. "Something's not right. She doesn't look like the girl in the documents..."
Sandra suddenly coughed heavily. "Jackie, it's time for your medicine! Fiona, go get your grandpa's medicine and a glass of water!"
Fiona, in a good mood today, complied and got up to fetch the medicine.
Sandra's interruption caused Jackie to drop the subject. Sandra then smiled warmly and asked, "Katherine, where did you go just now?"
