Chapter 148 Give Him a Look, Let Him Figure It Out
Katherine didn't speak. She just held the man's hand and stared at him without blinking.
She gave him a look, letting him figure it out himself!
Alex was silent for two seconds, then turned his head to Teresa and said, "Teresa, take Scarlett back."
Of course, Teresa was unwilling, but she understood the situation. If she didn't go, Alex would have to, and that would make Katherine unhappy.
As a loyal supporter of Katherine, how could Teresa allow that to happen?
Teresa answered, "Got it, Alex. I'll take Scarlett back! I won't be rude to her."
With that, Teresa reluctantly walked over to Scarlett. "Let's go, Scarlett. Alex is busy right now. I'll take you!"
Scarlett's innocent doe-like eyes were fixed on Katherine holding Alex's hand. She was in a daze for a moment before coming back to her senses and looking at Teresa.
She asked, "Teresa, but do you know how to get to my room?"
Teresa was dismissive and said, "If I don't know, can't I ask? There's a mouth under my nose, and there's a nurse's station on every floor of the hospital!"
Scarlett's face looked a bit unnatural, but she quickly brightened up with a smile. "Yeah, you're right. Let's go then!"
Before leaving, Scarlett looked deeply at Katherine and said considerately, "Katherine, take care of yourself. I'll come to see you again tomorrow."
Katherine nodded. "You too, Scarlett. Get well soon."
Scarlett's gaze shifted from Katherine to Alex, looking at him affectionately. "Alex, I'm leaving now."
"OK." He had nothing more to say.
Then, Scarlett followed Teresa out.
The room was left with only Katherine and Alex.
Alex looked down at Katherine holding his hand, his eyes warming, then raised an eyebrow at her small face. "What's up?"
"Nothing," answered she.
Katherine let go of his hand without hesitation. She had just wanted to test Scarlett's reaction to verify her suspicions.
If Scarlett were truly a simple-minded girl, her emotions would likely show on her face.
Normally, a pampered young lady wouldn't need to learn to hide her emotions. For example, Teresa and Fiona were straightforward and show their feelings openly. They liked what they liked and disliked what they disliked without hiding it.
However, when Scarlett saw her holding Alex's hand just now, she clearly cared but still smiled.
This showed that Scarlett wasn't as simple and innocent as she appeared; she had some level of pretense.
But Scarlett's delicate appearance made her pretense seem natural.
Actually, Katherine didn't care whether Scarlett was pretending or what kind of person she was.
What Katherine cared about was whether her severe allergic reaction was related to Scarlett, whether Scarlett had done something to her. If so, then their enmity was set!
Although the test couldn't determine if Scarlett was responsible, it did confirm that she was scheming and insincere. Katherine would have to be cautious around her in the future.
As for the real cause of her allergy today, it might be impossible to find out.
Even if Scarlett had the motive and was the prime suspect, she would have already changed clothes and washed her hands, leaving no evidence.
However, Katherine was surprised that Alex stayed because she lightly pulled him instead of escorting his beloved Scarlett.
"You didn't let me go out to Scarlett, and now you're ignoring me? Katherine, what do you mean?" Alex's tone was displeased, seemingly having a grievance against her. Katherine snapped back to reality and realized Alex was still standing by her bed, looking down at her.
No, he was glaring at her!
Katherine also felt that Alex must have found her action of pulling him just now inexplicable, so she thought for a moment and said, "Alex, I remembered. I have something to discuss with you!"
Alex let out a cold snort, then elegantly moved to sit down by the bedside, his long legs lazily crossed, exuding an air of regal authority. "Go ahead, what is it?"
Katherine smacked her lips and said, "There's a chestnut cake I made myself in the fridge at home. Can you ask Leander to bring it to me? I'm craving it right now."
Alex's eyes turned cold. "Is that all?"
Katherine nodded. "Yeah, that's all."
Alex's face darkened, but he looked at her deeply. "Katherine, if you have anything you want to ask me, ask now, and I'll tell you."
"Nothing!" Katherine turned her face to look out the window, yawning tiredly, avoiding his gaze.
What was there to ask? Since she wasn't his real wife, asking too much would be annoying.
Alex's eyes narrowed, watching her indifferent demeanor, his jaw gradually tightening.
If it weren't for her poor little swollen hand today, he would have really wanted to pick her up and teach her a good lesson!
Feeling extremely frustrated by Katherine, Alex pinched his heavy brow, having no choice but to digest his emotions himself.
Then, he took Katherine's small swollen hand, wrapped in gauze, into his palm to check if the swelling had gone down and asked, "Does your hand still hurt?"
Katherine continued to look out the window, paused, and replied faintly, "It's okay, I can bear it."
Alex's voice deepened. "The doctor has already checked all your allergens. When the results come out, remember each one. You must avoid them in the future."
Katherine pouted. "Oh, got it. I don't want to die. I'll take care of myself!"
"Turn your head and look at me when you speak." Alex's tone suddenly sounded commanding.
Katherine reluctantly turned her face back, only to meet his deep, dark eyes, her chest tightening suddenly.
Why was he looking at her like that?
And why was he so close?
Was he going to tease her again?
Alex placed one hand on the edge of the bed and the other on the mattress beside her, leaning in closer. "Katherine, is there really nothing you want to ask me?"
Katherine still shook her head. "No. Alex, what do you want me to ask you?"
Alex moved closer. "I want you to ask me..."
The man's speech seemed deliberately slow, and the words "ask me" sounded almost like... "kiss me."
Katherine was startled. The misheard words and the inappropriate closeness made her scalp tingle. Her hands were useless now, and in her panic, she blurted out, "Alex, I'm sleepy!"
"You just woke up, how can you be sleepy again?" Alex's brow furrowed, and he immediately raised his hand to check her forehead, which was not hot.
Katherine blinked guiltily. "Alex, I'm fine! I'm just used to taking a nap at this time; if I don't, I'll feel uncomfortable."
"Then sleep!" He furrowed his brow, then reached over to remove the pillow behind her, gently supporting her shoulders to lay her flat on the bed. "Alright, sleep now."
Katherine was a bit dizzy, not used to being so meticulously cared for by this nobleman.
Before closing her eyes to sleep, she hesitated and then tried to say, "Alex, if I fall asleep, don't leave yet. Wait until Teresa comes back before you go, okay?"
Alex looked her, who rarely asked him for something, squinting his eyes. "What, are you scared to be alone?"
"No, I..." said she.
Alex's rough hand suddenly cupped her cheek, his long fingers gently brushing, soothing her, "Silly girl, you don't have to pretend in front of me. It's normal for a girl to be afraid of sleeping alone in a strange place. I won't laugh at you."
Katherine felt like she was being underestimated, stubbornly saying, "You underestimated me! I'm not scared! I'm just worried that if no one is in the room, and the IV runs out, no one will notice, and I'll end up getting air pumped into me and die!"
Alex's brow furrowed, the gentle curve of his lips hardening in an instant.
When it came to ruining the mood, Katherine was probably the best in the world.
He sighed helplessly, tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "Don't worry, I won't let you die."
Katherine paused, turned her face away, and closed her eyes, murmuring, "Yeah, you won't let me die."
At least not within these three months, definitely not.
