Chapter 167 Laura Dead For a Long Time
When Scarlett arrived, she came to the police station with Sunny in the family car driven by their chauffeur.
Earlier, Bernard had sent Sunny home to study, leaving in the family car.
So now, Scarlett had to ride back home with Bernard.
As soon as she got into Bernard's car, Scarlett noticed the amulet hanging from the rearview mirror.
The amulet had been blessed by a priest at the church and had a small photo, less than an inch in size, embedded in the center. The photo was of a little girl and her mother.
The little girl had a small mole between her eyebrows, just like Scarlett.
Scarlett knew that Bernard never believed in superstitions, but he was still willing to get an amulet for their protection.
It was clear how important this mother-daughter pair was to him.
However, the people in the photo were not Scarlett and her mother, but the long-missing former wife and daughter of the Mitchell family.
That was, Bernard's ex-wife and their daughter, Laura Mitchell.
Scarlett asked with a hint of jealousy, "Bernard, you still have Laura's photo in your car?"
Bernard had just started the car, his hand on the steering wheel. He glanced at the amulet, and his cold eyes softened. "Yeah, I keep it as a memento."
Scarlett's eyes, like a deer's, blinked with a bit of sadness. "Bernard, you're so biased. Why don't you put up photos of me and Sunny?"
Bernard replied calmly and seriously, "Don't compare yourselves to Laura."
Scarlett frowned, feeling hurt. "I can't compare to her? Are we never as important as Laura in your heart?"
Bernard sensed the emotion in Scarlett's voice, slowed down the car, and reached over to gently pat her head. "Silly girl, you're always by my side. I can see you anytime. Why would I need a photo? Laura left me when she was five. I don't know how she's been all these years. I couldn't protect her, so this is the only way I can pray for her safety."
Scarlett frowned, and advised with concern, "Precisely because Laura has been gone since she was little, you should let her go. I think Laura wouldn't want you to live in the shadow of their disappearance. Maybe they have gone and are now living a happy life in heaven!"
Bernard's eyes darkened, and he put his hand back on the steering wheel.
He never liked hearing people say things that implied Laura was dead because he never wanted to believe that his mother and sister had died. Bernard preferred to think they were living somewhere, under new identities, carefree and happy.
It was only because it was Scarlett saying this that Bernard didn't kick her out of the car.
Scarlett didn't notice Bernard was upset. She looked at the amulet and said cutely, "Bernard, I want you to hang a photo of me and Sunny in the car too. That way, you can think of us often while you're driving. Can you do that?"
Bernard snorted, "You, maybe. But why would I want to think of Sunny? Think of him getting a 3 on his math final?"
Scarlett felt embarrassed for Sunny. "Bernard, Sunny is actually quite smart. He just doesn't focus on his studies."
"Not focusing on his studies is an excuse? We've hired so many tutors, and he still gets a 3? It's embarrassing to say he's from the Mitchell family!" Bercard retorted.
She pleaded, "Well... okay! Then don't hang Sunny's photo, just mine, alright?"
Bernard heard Scarlett's soft and sweet voice, and with a sigh of resignation, he said indulgently, "Alright, I'll hang a photo of you in the car tomorrow. I'll think of you every time I drive, okay?"
Scarlett smiled and nodded. "OK!"
Bernard pinched the bridge of his nose, feeling a bit exhausted. He had always been so accommodating to Scarlett, sometimes he wondered if he had spoiled her too much.
Having achieved her goal, Scarlett turned her head to look out the window, revealing a disdainful expression.
She didn't really care whether Bernard hung her photo in the car or thought of her while driving. She just wanted to outshine Laura!
Everyone said Scarlett was lucky, born as the little princess of the Mitchell family, showered with love and affection.
Little did they know, all these years, her status in the Mitchell family had never surpassed that of a child who had been missing for over a decade!
Her father had spent a fortune to build Moonlight Manor in the heart of the city, in memory of Laura, that dead child.
And with Bernard, she was always second to the missing Laura.
When she was young, Scarlett tried to win Bernard's affection by imitating Laura. She even had a mole tattooed between her eyebrows to look just like Laura, even though she didn't like it at all.
Because she was the stepsister brought in by the stepmother, Bernard didn't like her when she was little. She could only gain a bit of Bernard's sympathy by mimicking the habits and preferences of the missing Laura. That was how Scarlett earned her current status of being cherished by Bernard!
In reality, it wasn't Bernard living in Laura's shadow, but Scarlett herself!
That was why Scarlett hated Laura the most, the haunting specter in her heart!
And now, what she found even harder to accept was that she wasn't the most special person to Alex either.
She was unwilling, just unwilling!
To anyone, Scarlett should always be the most important and special one!
Thinking about it, Scarlett's voice trembled as she said, "Bernard, I'm suddenly feeling a bit scared."
Bernard, thinking his sister was feeling unwell, pulled over and asked gently, "What's wrong? I'm here with you. What are you afraid of?"
Scarlett held her brother's hand, looking anxious. "Whenever I think of Katherine, I get scared. I always feel she has a lot of hostility towards me. And now, with Sophie doing such a foolish thing, I'm really afraid Katherine will retaliate against me."
"Don't be afraid. I'll have people protect you. I won't let anyone harm you," Bernard promised her.
Bernard thought of Katherine's rude behavior towards him and felt a surge of displeasure. Katherine was indeed not to be underestimated.
He had already lost one sister and would not allow anyone to harm Scarlett again.
Meanwhile, in a car driving in the opposite direction.
Katherine glanced at Alex, who was focused on driving, feeling a bit complicated. She bit her lip and said, "Alex, thank you."
He glanced at her sideways and asked, "What for?"
She explained, "Thank you for helping me find the witnessed in time today. Otherwise, this matter wouldn't have been resolved so quickly."
He questioned, "How do you know it was me who found the new witness?"
Alex's sharp question caught Katherine off guard.
Alex had never mentioned that he was the one who found the new witness.
And as far as Alex knew, Katherine was just a country girl with no reasonable means to obtain such undisclosed information.
She couldn't possibly say it was Frank who reported it to her.
