Chapter 653 Discovered

Katherine, with a mix of politeness and sarcasm, shot back, "Really?"

Bernard nodded. "Tt's true. What went down with Claire and the fam back then had zilch to do with you. Even though there were whispers about your parentage, everyone eventually chilled out and believed you were Claire and Edwin's kid."

Katherine sneered.

Bernard saw Katherine's indifferent look and felt pretty helpless, like he had no other moves left.

Seeing Katherine's growing belly, Bernard was seriously worried about letting her leave. After mulling it over, he tried to persuade her, "You don't wanna see Alex, right? If you stay here, he won't bug you. I promise, from now until you give birth, Alex won't show up in front of you."

Katherine was a bit taken aback. She had to admit that Bernard's offer was pretty tempting.

She came back to the city from Jonathan's villa because Alex had tracked her down, and her due date was creeping up.

Even though Jonathan promised to get the best doc for her delivery, she was still freaked out about any complications during childbirth. She didn't wanna die, and she sure as hell didn't want her baby to be at risk.

Coming back to Janetrick to wait for the baby, she was scared Alex would snatch the kid while she was still out cold after giving birth.

After thinking it over, Katherine had an idea and said, "So, how are you gonna explain me staying here to your family? You know I don't want them to know who I am."

Bernard was stoked to hear Katherine's response and said, "Don't sweat it. If you don't want them to know, I won't spill. Edwin took the grandparents abroad to visit relatives and they won't be back for three months. It's just Sunny and me at home. You can crash here without worrying about anyone."

Katherine thought it over and finally nodded. "Alright! I trust you. You said Alex won't bother me and my soon-to-be-born kid. I hope you keep your word."

Bernard grinned. "Don't worry."

Katherine yawned. "My phone's dead. I need to let my friends know what's up, or they'll think I've been kidnapped."

Bernard handed her his phone. "Here, use mine. I'll get someone to bring you a charger later."

Katherine didn't refuse and took his phone to call Ambrosia, explaining the situation.

Even though Ambrosia wasn't thrilled about her moving to the Mitchell Mansion, she could tell Katherine had made up her mind, so she didn't push it. Katherine's safety was all that mattered.

After hanging up with Ambrosia, Katherine handed the phone back to Bernard. "Thanks!"

Bernard smiled and gently ruffled Katherine's hair. "Alright, since you're staying, I'll get someone to bring your stuff. Is there anything important you need?"

Katherine thought for a sec. "Nothing major, but I do have a favor to ask."

Bernard, eager to help and ease his guilt, said, "Sure, what is it?"

Katherine said, "I went to Sophia's birthday bash today to check out Lotus's self-portrait."

Hearing Lotus's name, Bernard was taken aback for a moment, then sighed. "Did you see it?"

Katherine shook her head. "Nope. Alex snagged it early just to keep me from seeing it!"

Bernard raised an eyebrow, asking, "So, what do you want?"

Katherine didn't beat around the bush. "I want you to help me buy that painting from Alex, no matter the cost. I'll pay!"

Bernard squinted. "Money's not the issue. The problem is, getting a painting from Alex isn't a walk in the park. He bought it knowing you wanted it, just to mess with you. He won't let it go easily."

Katherine raised an eyebrow. "So, you're saying it's impossible?"

Bernard reached out and gently ruffled Katherine's hair. "It's tough, but if you want it, I'll do my best to get it for you. But it won't be quick. You'll have to wait, okay?"

Katherine nodded. "It's okay, as long as I can get Lotus's self-portrait."

Bernard looked at Katherine with pity. "You wanna see her that bad?"

Katherine looked up. "Don't you?"

Bernard sighed. "I do. But for those who are gone, it's enough to remember them. Being too obsessed will wear you out. Katherine, I hope you can let go."

Katherine gently pushed Bernard's hand away from her head. "I can't let go. You all can forget those hurts, but I won't."

Bernard, understanding Katherine's obsession, withdrew his hand and stood up. "Alright, let's not dwell on sad stuff. It's getting late. I'll take you to your room to rest. It might be a bit uncomfortable at first, but if you have any problems, call me. You'll get used to it slowly."

Katherine stood up and followed him silently.

As soon as Bernard opened the door, he saw Sunny standing there, looking shocked.

Bernard paused, his brow furrowing. "When did you get back? What are you doing standing here?"

Sunny snapped out of it, looked at Bernard, then at Katherine, and said in shock, "So Katherine is..."

"Shut up," Bernard shouted, cutting Sunny off.

Katherine didn't want anyone to know her identity, and now Sunny had overheard. It had been hard enough to persuade her to stay, and he was afraid she might change her mind because of this.

Sunny, after being interrupted, didn't plan to let it go. Not daring to speak to Bernard, he looked at Katherine with surprise. "No wonder I've always felt something special about you. So you're the Laura he's been looking for all these years, my half-sister."

Katherine frowned, clearly annoyed by the situation.

Bernard pulled Sunny aside to stop him from saying more, then turned to the maid waiting nearby. "Take Ms. Galatea to that room to rest and get her toiletries and bedding ready."

The maid nodded. "Yes. Ms. Galatea, please follow me."
