Chapter 223 Katherine is Experiencing Morning Sickness
Sherry snapped out of her daze from seeing the huge check and came back to reality. She shot Katherine a look full of jealousy and resentment, then sneered, "Where else could she get the money? She must've used her shameless tricks to swindle it from Mr. Melville!"
Lillian, of course, backed Sherry up. "Katherine, aren't you just giving away someone else's money? Aren't you afraid Mr. Melville will hold you accountable for using so much of the Melville family's money without permission?"
Katherine laughed. "Lillian, you seem to have forgotten something important. The Mr. Melville you're talking about is my husband. Technically, his money is my money. Just like how you've been spending Mr. Galatea's money all these years. Has he ever held you accountable?"
Lillian's face turned an odd shade, alternating between green and white. Katherine's comeback left her speechless.
Sherry's face looked even worse!
She had thought that a country girl like Katherine would never be respected in the Melville family and would soon be kicked out. She never expected Katherine to have control over such a large sum of the Melville family's money. This completely shattered her understanding!
Damn it!
Katherine glanced at her watch unhurriedly, yawned, and said, "It's getting late. I won't stay for lunch. As for whether the money on the check is from the Melville family or where it came from, that's none of your business. If you look down on the money I gave you so much, just don't spend it."
Lillian and Sherry said nothing more. They never said they wouldn't spend it!
Even if the Melville family came after the money later, Katherine would be the one held accountable for using it without permission. It had nothing to do with the Galatea family. They'd spend the money first and handle the consequences later!
Joshua didn't say anything more. He silently pocketed the check, no longer concerned about Katherine. She could take whatever she wanted.
No one stopped her, so the people Katherine called came and smoothly moved all the gifts from the Melville family, including the painting "Late Autumn" that Alex had bought for her at an auction.
From now on, she was completely done with the Galatea family.
Not far from the Galatea family's entrance, a black luxury car was parked.
After walking out of the Galatea family, Katherine naturally opened the car door and got in.
In the car, Ambrosia was in the driver's seat, touching up her lipstick in the rearview mirror, while Frank was in the passenger seat playing a mobile game to kill time.
Seeing Katherine return, Frank paused his game, turned around, and said, "Katherine, seriously, the Galatea family has always treated you so poorly. Why are we still being so polite to them? Dealing with them would be a piece of cake!"
Katherine rubbed her temples, genuinely feeling tired. She leaned back in the leather seat, closed her eyes to rest, and murmured, "In my opinion, Claire must have been really desperate back then to seek help from a classmate like Joshua after so many years. No matter what Joshua's motives were, he did take a risk to bring me back to the Galatea family in such circumstances. He extended a helping hand when she was most helpless, and I appreciate that on her behalf. From now on, as long as the Galatea family doesn't provoke me, I won't hold anything against them."
Frank and Ambrosia exchanged a look, feeling a pang of sadness.
From childhood to adulthood, Katherine had never received a bit of warmth from the Galatea family. Being sent to the countryside, she had endured all kinds of hardships. They had witnessed the painstaking process she went through to get to where she was today and had experienced it alongside her.
Seeing Katherine looking so listless, Frank wanted to cheer her up and changed the subject. "Katherine, since we've got the gifts back, how about we go have some fun and drink to our heart's content?"
Drinking in broad daylight! Katherine wasn't in the mood for it. She waved her hand and instructed, "Frank, check if there have been any luxurious estates in Lindvale that were demolished and rebuilt in the past twenty years. If there are, look into the background of the original owners. Also, send someone to investigate a former student of Lindvale University named Claire Austin and bring me her information."
Frank realized something and became more serious. "Claire Austin. Your mom?"
Katherine nodded. Although Joshua believed Claire had been found and killed by her enemies, Katherine always felt that Claire was still alive.
Ambrosia turned her head, adjusted her gold-rimmed glasses, and looked at Katherine, who didn't look well, with a bit of concern in her eyes. "Let's go get something to eat first. Katherine has lost weight recently!"
Frank also looked at Katherine, nodded in agreement that she had indeed lost weight, and then joked, "Katherine, even if Mr. Melville is away on a business trip, you shouldn't miss him so much. Come on! What do you want to eat? It's on me today!"
Ambrosia gave him a disdainful look. "You treat? Would you have what you have today without Katherine? Would you have the money to treat?"
Frank didn't care and said, "That's why! The wool comes from the sheep! What's wrong with me taking advantage of Katherine?"
Ambrosia couldn't stand him, adjusted her gold-rimmed glasses, and snorted, "Then let's go eat some lamb chops. It's getting cold, and eating lamb will warm us up. Katherine always loves lamb chops this time of year."
Hearing Ambrosia mention lamb chopsmade Katherine recall their rich, savory taste, but suddenly she felt nauseous. She couldn't control her reaction, so she rolled down the window and dry-heaved for a while!
After she recovered, she sat back in her seat, took deep breaths to calm herself, and then noticed Ambrosia and Frank looking at her with thoughtful expressions.
Having grown up together, she knew what they were thinking with just one look!
Katherine forced a smile. "Don't get any ideas. I just have an upset stomach!"
Frank, clearly thinking of what any adult would, smiled with a hint of suggestiveness. "Really? Katherine, honestly, have you and Mr. Melville been taking any precautions lately?"
Katherine yawned indifferently and replied, "Sort of. We sleep in separate rooms."
Frank frowned and stated, "With Mr. Melville right there, and you can actually bear to sleep in separate rooms? What a waste!"
Ambrosia couldn't stand it anymore and punched Frank hard. "Whose side are you on? Katherine is the real gem here. Should she let Mr. Melville take advantage of her so easily?"
Frank yelped, rubbing his sore arm, and laughed. "You're right!"
Ambrosia rolled her eyes at him and added, "But Frank, you should still go to the pharmacy and get a pregnancy test for Katherine, just in case!"
Katherine remained silent.
