Chapter 765 A New Dad
When Katherine returned to the Melville Manor with her three children, it was already dark.
She had originally planned to grab a quick bite near the preschool and then bring the kids back, but Sunny insisted on taking the kids out to play after dinner.
Naturally, the three children were eager to go, and as their mother, she couldn't bear to refuse them when she saw the excitement in their eyes.
So she agreed and went with them.
She called Fiona and asked her to let Grandma know that they would be coming home a bit later today.
Fiona, sensing something was off, asked, "Katherine, what's wrong? You sound so tired. Are you feeling unwell?"
"Nothing, I'm fine."
"Alright then."
After hanging up, Katherine rubbed her temples. She wasn't unwell, just a bit distracted and listless.
However, seeing the kids having so much fun on the trampoline lifted her spirits a bit.
When they got back to the Melville Manor, they heard voices chatting as soon as they entered, and it wasn't Sandra and Jackie's voices.
Katherine led the children to the living room and saw three women sitting on the couch, deep in conversation.
It was Ambrosia, Teresa, and Fiona.
Katherine cleared her throat, and the three girls turned their eyes towards her.
Fiona exclaimed, "Katherine!"
Teresa shouted, "Katherine, you're finally back!"
Ambrosia stood up immediately when she saw Katherine, "Katherine!"
Then she squatted down to greet the three little ones, "It's been a while. Did you three miss me?"
Edith, who adored Ambrosia the most because she thought Ambrosia was the prettiest person besides her mom, was the first to throw herself into Ambrosia's arms, "Aunt Ambrosia, I missed you!"
Charles, being a boy, was a bit shy and didn't dare to be as affectionate as Edith, but he greeted politely, "Hi, Aunt Ambrosia!"
Julian still clung to Katherine's leg, looking at Ambrosia with unfamiliar eyes.
Ambrosia found this odd. George used to cling to her as Edith did. What happened today?
"George? Are you mad at me?"
Julian didn't know who Ambrosia was or how to respond, so he hid behind Katherine.
Ambrosia frowned slightly, holding Edith as she stood up, "Katherine, what's wrong with George? Did you scold him?"
Katherine looked down at the shy and timid kid, feeling puzzled herself. She didn't know what was wrong with him these past few days.
But she didn't have the energy to think too much about the kids' issues right now. She shook her head, "Nothing, maybe he's just feeling shy."
Shy?
Since when did George become shy?
Ambrosia looked at Julian with increasing confusion, feeling that something was off about the child.
Katherine raised an eyebrow and asked her, "What brings you here all of a sudden? You didn't even give me a heads-up."
Ambrosia said innocently, "Didn't I say yesterday that I would come to see the kids? But something came up, so I couldn't make it. Katherine, I did call you before coming today, but you didn't answer, so I came over myself."
Katherine took out her phone and saw that Ambrosia had indeed called her twice, but she hadn't heard it.
Maybe she was really too distracted today.
"I took the kids out to play and didn't hear it. Alright, you watch the kids for me. I'll go upstairs and change, then come down to join you," Katherine replied.
Ambrosia nodded and watched Katherine go upstairs.
At this moment, Fiona came over and whispered to Ambrosia, "Don't you think Katherine seems a bit off today? She looks particularly down."
Ambrosia glanced at Fiona, "Maybe it's because she's taken over your family business. It's a lot of work and very tiring."
Fiona shook her head, "No! Just a few days ago, Katherine was full of enthusiasm about taking over the company. She was energetic at work too! I was at the office today, and Katherine held two major meetings as usual! But in the afternoon, she left early for something, and then she became like this!"
Ambrosia frowned alertly, "Left early for something? Do you know what it was?"
Fiona shrugged, "I don't know. Ever since my brother went missing, Katherine has seemed different. She always looks so unhappy."
Teresa came over and knocked Fiona on the head, "Would you be happy if your boyfriend suddenly disappeared without a trace? Katherine really cares about Uncle Alex. I feel so bad for her. It's like she's been through hell for him!"
Fiona rubbed her head where Teresa had hit her, "Of course I know that! I'm just worried about Katherine. Honestly, Alex has been missing for so many years, and our family has lost hope! I wish Katherine could move on a bit. Otherwise, I'm afraid she might get depressed."
Katherine's current state did seem like she was suffering from depression—distracted, her mood fluctuating, and often lost in thought.
Except when she was busy with work, she seemed to snap out of it. Otherwise, it was like she was forcing a smile, and it was really heartbreaking.
Ambrosia noticed Edith in her arms looking upset as she listened to their conversation, so she frowned and reminded them, "Alright, don't talk about this in front of the kids! They'll get upset too!"
Edith was indeed upset and frowned, "Aunt Ambrosia, were you saying my mommy is depressed? Is my mommy unhappy every day because my daddy isn't coming back?"
Ambrosia, Teresa, and Fiona all fell silent, not knowing how to explain to the child.
"Edith, don't think too much. Adults can have bad days too. Your mom just needs some rest, and she'll feel better soon."
Edith pouted, "I also think Mommy has been unhappy every day, especially lately! If my daddy never comes back, can you find another good man to be our new daddy? Maybe Mommy is just too lonely and needs someone to keep her company, like Daddy used to!"
