Chapter 276 Second-Hand Goods
Seeing Alex pull Katherine aside for a private chat, Scarlett's anxiety rose. She turned her tearful eyes away from Bernard and asked, "Alex, where are you taking Katherine?"
Alex shot Scarlett a cold glance. "Go inside and stay with Charles. I'll handle this."
Scarlett picked up on Alex's tone—he seemed to think Katherine was to blame.
She had put on quite a show, and Alex must have believed Katherine had hurt Charles. Katherine wouldn't get away with it!
Scarlett nodded obediently. "Alright, I'll go take care of Charles. Come back once you've sorted everything out."
Alex ignored her and turned his icy gaze to Katherine. "Come with me."
Katherine didn't want to deal with Alex, but she knew he wouldn't drop it if she refused to cooperate.
After a moment, she nodded and prepared to follow him.
Jonathan stepped in, blocking Katherine. "Alex, where are you taking her? Katherine would never harm a child."
Alex squinted, his handsome face devoid of its usual friendliness. "You know her well?"
Jonathan smiled warmly. "I've known Katherine for a while and trust her character. You've known her longer than me. Don't you trust her?"
Alex snorted. "Trust? Based on what? Your intuition? Or because you have feelings for her?"
Jonathan's expression darkened, but he kept a polite smile. "Alex, there's no need to be so harsh."
"Forget it, Mr. Mostow. It's fine. I can explain everything to Mr. Melville myself," Katherine cut in.
She didn't want these two men arguing over her innocence. It would make her look like Helen, causing a disaster.
Jonathan frowned, still uneasy. "Katherine, you don't have to."
"It's fine!" Katherine waved him off and followed Alex down the hospital corridor.
At the end of the corridor, Alex entered the stairwell.
Katherine hesitated briefly before pushing the door open and following him inside.
"Ask whatever you want, Mr. Melville! But no matter how many times you ask, my answer remains the same: I didn't do it. If you don't believe me, call the police! It's not the first time I've been falsely accused and ended up at the police station!" Katherine declared as soon as they were inside.
Alex didn't respond. He leaned against the wall and lit a cigarette.
After taking a drag, he pulled a small rectangular box from his pocket and tossed it to her, his voice cold. "Take care of your hand first."
What?
Katherine instinctively caught the item he threw at her.
She opened her hand and saw it was a tube of burn ointment.
Katherine's eyes widened in surprise.
Alex had noticed her burn, even though she hadn't shown any signs of it. How did he know?
Since the ointment was in her hand, she decided to use it.
"Thanks," she said lightly, not probing further into how he had noticed her burn.
As she applied the ointment to her aching palm, Katherine explained, "I really didn't harm Charles. It was the waiter's mistake at the restaurant!"
Alex's deep eyes seemed unfocused. Through the thin veil of smoke, he looked at her with an unreadable expression. "Did I ask you that?"
Katherine frowned. "Then why did you call me over? Just to give me burn ointment?"
He didn't answer. He squinted at her burned hand, noticing the shiny ring on her finger, and a hint of sarcasm appeared in his eyes. "Ms. Galatea, you've remarried, yet you're still wearing the Melville family wedding ring?"
Katherine remained silent.
The term "remarried" wasn't quite accurate. Their relationship had been a business arrangement, not a real marriage.
And she also found the ring on her finger quite annoying!
Katherine stated, "I don't want to wear it either, but this custom-made Melville family ring won't come off! Unless, Mr. Melville, you kindly give me some of your family's special solution to remove it so that I can return it to you. Then you can give it to your future wife."
He looked at her coldly, his eyes dark and somber. "No need. My future wife doesn't need second-hand goods."
Katherine was taken aback, then frowned deeply. Was he implying something?
His future wife doesn't need second-hand goods?
Did he mean his wife wouldn't want a second-hand ring, and he wouldn't want a second-hand woman either?
Feeling indignant, Katherine replied with a cold smile, "Unfortunately, Mr. Melville, your future wife won't have a choice because you, as a man who has been married before, are also second-hand goods. We're in the same boat!"
Alex was momentarily stunned, his face filled with anger!
He had only meant the ring, not implying anything about her.
Katherine had misunderstood and retaliated without hesitation!
Alex glared at her for a long time, deciding not to argue with her. "Finish applying the ointment and leave. Go wherever you need to go!"
"Huh?" Katherine was stunned and looked incredulous. "Mr. Melville, are you telling me to leave?"
Alex exhaled slowly. "Yes, I'll handle things here. You have nothing to do with it anymore."
After saying this, Alex extinguished his cigarette, turned, and walked out.
Katherine stood in the stairwell, staring at the small tube of burn ointment in her hand, thinking about his words and attitude.
She felt strange.
Could it be that Alex never suspected her of harming Charles?
Had he call her over just to give her a chance to leave?
