Chapter 993 I'm Not Crying!
Ruben had been observing Christina's facial expressions.
If Christina's expression while making the phone call earlier had made him suspicious, her current demeanor made Ruben even more doubtful about whether she and Bernard were truly a married couple.
"Bernard has a rather cold personality. It must be exhausting to interact with him on a daily basis, right?" Ruben asked casually, as if making small talk, while closely observing her every reaction.
Christina seemed to find a kindred spirit and nodded in agreement, "Yes, he really is quite cold, and his temper is rather unpredictable. Sometimes it's hard to figure him out, and it's very frustrating!"
"Unpredictable?" Ruben raised an eyebrow and repeated, "Bernard is like that with outsiders, but since he married you, it must be because he likes you. How could he be so cold to you?"
Christina sighed helplessly, "Who knows! Sometimes I don't even know what I did to upset him. It's very hard to communicate!"
"How is that possible? If Bernard treats you like that, why would you still marry him?" Ruben's doubts grew stronger, feeling that their relationship was not as simple as it seemed.
Christina shook her head, "Ruben, you have no idea how difficult Bernard is to deal with. If it weren't for me..."
She wanted to vent her frustrations about Bernard but suddenly realized something was wrong and quickly shut her mouth.
She had let her guard down around Ruben, and since it was rare to find someone to complain about Bernard with, she almost spilled all her troubles.
She was so close to revealing that their marriage was a contract marriage. That was close!
Fortunately, she stopped in time and didn't say anything she shouldn't have.
"What's wrong?" Ruben felt he was close to the answer, but Christina stopped talking at that moment.
Christina smiled to cover it up, "Nothing, I was just joking! Of course, it's because I like him. Otherwise, why would I marry him!"
Although her words seemed flawless, Ruben felt that what Christina wanted to say earlier was not this.
"Christina." Ruben was about to ask more questions when the office door suddenly opened, and Bernard strode in from outside.
Seeing the two of them sitting opposite each other, seemingly having a pleasant conversation, Bernard's expression was unreadable, "Am I interrupting?"
Christina stood up abruptly, "Bernard, why are you here?"
"Didn't you ask me to come and save you?" Bernard squinted his eyes and showed her his phone, displaying the message Christina had sent him.
Christina smiled awkwardly, "I misunderstood. Ruben wasn't asking for compensation; he just wanted me to work at the Rojas Group."
"Work? Is the Mitchell family unable to support you, or are you lacking something? Why do you need to work? Is it enjoyable?" Bernard said, grabbing Christina's hand, "Have you had enough? Let's go home!"
Christina was forced to follow him, only able to awkwardly wave goodbye to Ruben.
Watching their departing figures, Ruben's eyes gradually deepened.
He was unhappy about Bernard barging into his office, but he couldn't get angry.
Their families were relatives, though distant, and he couldn't afford to offend the Mitchell family.
But he couldn't ignore the fact that Christina and Bernard's relationship was definitely not that simple.
Bernard pulled Christina out of the Rojas Group and into the car.
"Christina, did you just ignore what I said? I warned you yesterday that as Mrs. Mitchell of the Mitchell family, you need to be mindful of your actions. And today, you couldn't wait to run to Ruben?"
"What are you talking about?" Seeing his expression, Christina knew Bernard had misunderstood again, "I really came here for an interview. I didn't know Ruben was the president of this company at first!"
Bernard snorted coldly, with a hint of sarcasm, "Aren't you old classmates? You say you didn't know?"
"I really didn't know! Ruben and I were high school classmates, but we didn't keep in touch much. I don't know his family situation. I just wanted to find a job." Christina felt her explanation was weak, but she still had to say it. Whether he believed it or not was up to him!
Bernard grabbed her wrist, "Who allowed you to find a job?"
At this moment, Bernard's eyes were terrifyingly cold, as if Christina had committed a grave mistake.
"Let go of me." Christina struggled to free her arm from his grip, "Bernard, it hurts! What are you doing?"
Bernard held her arm tightly, not giving her a chance to pull away, "You are now Mrs. Mitchell of the Mitchell family. You don't need to work, and you certainly don't need to work for another company. Doing so would only bring shame to the Mitchell family! It would make people think the Mitchell family mistreated you!"
"It hurts." Christina couldn't help but cry out in pain, tears welling up in her eyes.
Seeing this, Bernard finally let go. He realized he might have used too much force and looked down to see not only red marks from his grip but also several scratches on Christina's arm!
"I didn't think that far. I was just planning for my future! I can't live off the Mitchell family forever. We're not a real couple. I want to be able to support myself after a year! And I want to pay you back the money I owe you. I owe you three million dollars. How can I repay you if I don't work?" Christina said, feeling wronged, as she pulled her arm back. The area he had gripped was now a large red patch, and with the previous scratches, it looked very painful.
Bernard frowned slightly, his expression softening a bit, "No one is asking you to repay the money."
"But I want to repay it! I said it was a loan, so I have to repay it!" Christina was very determined.
She hadn't stolen or done anything shameful; she just wanted to find a job!
Christina felt the weight of her grievances pressing on her chest. She blinked hard, fighting back her tears.
She didn't want to cry in front of Bernard. No matter how upset she was, she wouldn't give Bernard the chance to mock her.
Bernard looked at her profile, and his heart suddenly felt a tug!
Christina was clearly about to cry, but she stubbornly refused to let her tears fall.
Softening for just a moment, he pulled out a napkin and handed it to Christina, wanting to say something but ultimately saying nothing.
Seeing the napkin suddenly handed to her, Christina was stunned, genuinely surprised.
She had thought Bernard didn't care about others at all, but it turned out he had a bit of humanity.
"Thank you. It's just a bit hot in the car without ventilation. I was sweating, not crying!" Christina said stubbornly, but she still took the napkin and wiped her red eyes.
Bernard looked at her defiant attitude and snorted lightly.
Christina didn't have much ability, just a strong mouth.
