Chapter 982 Can't Drink?
A woman in a light purple dress stood behind them, looking at them with a puzzled expression. "Bernard, what are you doing here?"
"Nothing." Bernard let go of Christina.
The woman walked up to Christina, smiling as she looked her over. "This dress is a global limited edition, the only one of its kind. When I tried to order it, I was told it had already been reserved. I didn't expect to see someone wearing it here."
Christina knew that the dress Bernard had personally chosen must be very expensive, but she didn't expect it to be a global limited edition.
"I'm just borrowing it. I'll return it after the party," Christina explained.
The woman heard this and chuckled lightly. "I see."
For some reason, although the woman's words seemed natural, they made Christina uncomfortable. It felt like the woman had some hostility towards her.
But why?
Christina indeed didn't know this woman.
Since they didn't know each other, there was no chance she could have offended her.
So where did this woman's hostility come from?
Could it be...
Christina turned her head to look at Bernard beside her. Could it be because of Bernard?
"Bernard." Seeing that Christina wasn't saying anything, the woman walked back to Bernard and looked him over, "I think gray suits you best. Why are you wearing black today?"
So they must have known each other for a long time.
Christina observed the subtle relationship between the two, very curious about what had happened between them.
"Black is more formal." Bernard didn't say much, but it was clear he felt differently about this woman.
The more Christina looked at the beautifully dressed woman in front of her, the more familiar she seemed. She felt like she had seen this face in a movie before.
Suddenly realizing where she had seen her, Christina exclaimed, "Virginia Pearl, you're the famous actress Virginia!"
"Yes, I'm Virginia." Virginia nodded and smiled, "Today's party is my birthday party. I'm glad you could come."
So this party was her birthday party.
Bernard must have come to wish her a happy birthday, too.
Christina felt a bit embarrassed for not recognizing the guest of honor at the party she had been invited to.
"Which family are you from? I don't think we've met before."
Virginia's implication was that she didn't know Christina at all and was puzzled as to why a stranger was at her birthday party.
Her words made Christina even more embarrassed. She turned to Bernard. "I... I came with Mr. Mitchell today."
"Oh, you came with Bernard?" Virginia smiled at Bernard, "Bernard, is this lady your date?"
Remembering how Bernard seemed unhappy when she introduced them as friends to Ruben earlier, Christina stepped forward to play her role as Mrs. Mitchell, "Ms. Pearl, we are..."
"Friends." Before Christina could finish, Bernard coldly interrupted her.
Christina was stunned for a moment, then understood and kept quiet.
It seemed Bernard didn't want Virginia to know about their relationship.
"Friends? Girlfriend or just friends?" Virginia teased with a smile.
"Just friends," Bernard replied without hesitation.
Christina felt a bit awkward, pursed her lips, and smiled as she stepped forward, "Mr. Mitchell and I just recently met. I heard there was a party today, so I asked him to bring me along. Ms. Pearl, please don't misunderstand."
Since Bernard didn't want Virginia to know about their relationship, Christina naturally played along.
Bernard was her boss, and she had already upset him earlier. Now she needed to perform well.
Virginia didn't say much. She smiled and took Bernard's arm. "Since you're Bernard's friend, you're my friend too. By the way, I forgot to ask, what's your name?"
"Christina Russell." Christina had been playing Bernard's wife for so long without any public displays of affection, yet Virginia naturally took his arm?
Bernard didn't like too much physical contact with women, so Christina had always been careful about their distance.
But Virginia seemed used to taking his arm, and Bernard didn't react at all.
It seemed their relationship was quite unusual.
She pursed her lips, feeling inexplicably stifled.
"Ms. Russell, since you're Bernard's friend, come along!" Virginia continued to smile graciously and walked upstairs with Bernard.
Christina responded and followed silently.
The second floor of the party was a private area. Virginia opened one of the doors and walked in with Bernard.
"Virginia, where have you been? Everyone's waiting for you!" As soon as they entered, someone greeted them, "Bernard is here too!"
Christina followed them in, feeling like an outsider.
The room was filled with wealthy young men and women, all close friends, gathered around Virginia and Bernard, chatting happily.
Christina didn't know these people, nor did she understand their conversations. It felt like a circle she couldn't fit into, and she didn't want to force herself to try.
She found a corner to sit down and took a glass of juice.
Christina looked at Bernard not far away. He sat beside Virginia, his expression gentle, a stark contrast to his usual cold demeanor.
For some reason, seeing Bernard and Virginia together made Christina feel a bit sad.
She was Bernard's wife, even if only in name, but Bernard didn't care about her at all. She didn't even know why he brought her here!
Christina sighed and finished her drink.
It didn't matter; she was just working!
If Bernard ignored her, she could take it easy.
"Why are you drinking juice alone? Can't you have a drink?"
Virginia suddenly appeared beside her, holding a glass of wine.
Christina smiled and took the glass: "Thank you, I'm not much of a drinker."
"Don't be so reserved. Everyone here is a friend of Bernard and me. Since you're Bernard's friend, you're everyone's friend." Virginia clinked glasses with her and took a sip, "Since we're all friends, relax a bit!"
Despite saying she wasn't good at drinking, Christina felt obliged to take a sip out of politeness.
