Chapter 249 Where Does Ms. Galatea's Confidence Come From?
Katherine glanced at Bernard's handsome face in the rearview mirror and said, "I'm not scared. I just don't want to cause trouble between Ms. Mitchell and Mr. Melville."
Bernard's eyes narrowed with a lazy arrogance, and he chuckled, "So, you think just showing up in front of Alex will mess with Scarlett and Alex's relationship, huh?"
Katherine turned to look out the window at the passing scenery and replied calmly, "More or less."
Bernard smirked and snorted, "Ms. Galatea, where do you get the confidence to think you can compare to Scarlett?"
Katherine remained composed and smiled slightly at his sarcasm.
"Mr. Mitchell, it's only natural that no one can compare to Scarlett, whom you've spoiled since childhood. Just like no one, not even someone as remarkable as you, can compare to the dog I've raised since I was a kid. It's the same!"
The driver pressed his lips together tightly, almost bursting out laughing at Katherine's words.
But the next second, he felt a chill down his spine from Mr. Mitchell's displeasure.
In his ten years of driving for Mr. Mitchell, he'd never heard anyone talk to Mr. Mitchell like that.
Bernard fell silent, staring at Katherine in the rearview mirror for a while before smirking again.
"So, tell me, what do you think you have that can compare to Scarlett?" he asked.
Despite her youthful and innocent appearance, Katherine had a strong and mature inner self. She stood firm in her confidence, unaffected by others' criticisms, doubts, or mockery. Her resilience came from childhood hardships, her fearlessness forged in adversity, and she was indifferente to others' opinions and judgments.
She then said, "I may not have Miss Mitchell's privileges—her powerful family, protective brother, and nurtured beauty. The key difference is her dependency on Mr. Mitchell, like a delicate flower on a strong tree, while I've grown independently, like a lone seedling on a cliff. Miss Mitchell thrives under her family's support, but I've learned to stand on my own, facing challenges from childhood to adulthood. In my view, both Miss Mitchell and I have unique strengths and aren't lacking in any aspect."
Bernard stared at the girl in the front seat, who objectively stated her strengths and weaknesses. For the first time, he saw a dazzling vitality in a girl, feeling the tension of her indomitable spirit.
That tenacious yet calm vitality was indeed something Scarlett lacked.
However, Scarlett didn't need that kind of unnecessary strength. As long as he was there, Scarlett could effortlessly enjoy the best of everything.
Bernard stopped arguing with Katherine and slowly closed his eyes to rest. "I hope Ms. Galatea's self-awareness is correct, and you can grow into a tree that will never fall."
Katherine smiled and replied, "Thank you for your blessing, Mr. Mitchell."
Bernard squinted and hummed indifferently, "Tomorrow night, you need to attend an event with me. Be ready to wear formal attire."
Katherine was stunned. An event?
She remembered that in the hospital earlier, Mr. Mitchell had said she was his plus one for tomorrow to brush off Scarlett and Sophie. The event must be the birthday party of the Mitchell family's aunt, as Scarlett mentioned.
She had only cooperated with her boss at the time, not expecting Bernard to actually plan on taking her to the party!
Katherine hesitated. She usually didn't like attending such glamorous parties, but then she thought that older members of the Mitchell family, like Bernard's aunt, might know more about the family's past. If she could get in touch, she might find out something about her mom.
She thought for a moment and then turned her head to ask, "Mr. Mitchell, will Alex be at the event tomorrow?"
Bernard looked at her subtly, paused, and then said, "No, the Melville family never attends events hosted by the Mitchell family."
Right, the Mitchell family and the Melville family had conflicts, so they wouldn't attend each other's events. Alex had said at the hospital that he was catching a flight, probably for a business trip, so he wouldn't be back anytime soon.
Satisfied with the answer, Katherine put on a professional smile and replied, "Okay, Mr. Mitchell, I'll be ready with formal attire for the event tomorrow."
Bernard closed his eyes to rest and didn't speak again.
The Mitchell Group ended work at five, and Katherine left the company at six.
Walking out of the Mitchell Group building, Katherine strolled for a while and naturally turned into a quiet alley.
A black business car was parked by the roadside, and Katherine walked straight over, opened the door, and got in.
Inside the car, Ambrosia was focused on typing on her laptop. Hearing someone get in, she turned her head, and her cold, regal face softened into a gentle and respectful smile. "Katherine, finally off work?"
Feeling tired, Katherine leaned back in the seat and lazily rested her head on Ambrosia's shoulder.
Frank, sitting in the front passenger seat, looked at his watch and complained, "Is the Mitchell Group that exhausting? Just getting off work now?"
Katherine, resting on Ambrosia's shoulder, said lazily, "Not really. Most employees at the Mitchell Group leave at five. It's just that Bernard stayed to work overtime, and as his secretary, I couldn't leave first."
Ambrosia raised a hand and gently patted Katherine's shoulder. "I can't stand seeing you work so hard at the Mitchell Group."
Katherine yawned and responded, "It's just for a while, nothing much. If I couldn't handle this bit of hardship, I wouldn't have grown up."
Ambrosia sighed and added, "But you're pregnant now. You shouldn't overwork yourself!"
Katherine touched her belly and said, "My child will be as resilient as I am, don't worry. By the way, Ambrosia, remember to lend me a gown for tomorrow!"
