Chapter 171 Starting Over with Alex?
Alex replied, "After our last ride together, I did a bit of research on the city's subway routes."
He bent down to retrieve the subway card from the slot, then took Katherine's hand and led her to the turnstile, naturally guiding her towards the waiting area.
Katherine was even more puzzled, so much so that she didn't even notice her hand being held by him.
She asked, "Why would you research on this? With your status, you always have a private car to take you everywhere. You don't need to know anything about the subway, right?"
Alex glanced at her sideways and snorted, "Didn't you say last time that I should change my extravagant and indulgent habits?"
Katherine fell silent. She remembered indeed saying that, back at the horse ranch. At that time, she was trying to counter Sophie and assert her principles. She didn't really mean for Alex to change anything!
She explained, "Alex, I was just saying that casually. Did you really take my words to heart and come to experience the life of us ordinary citizen?"
Alex raised an eyebrow and asked, "I'm not a citizen?"
Katherine pouted disdainfully, "Of course not, you're a filthy capitalist!"
Alex was amused by her. "Did I exploit you?"
"Of course you did!" Katherine said confidently, "You exploited three months of my precious time and got me tangled up in a bunch of messy affairs!"
Alex suddenly stopped in his tracks and looked at her. "I'm really sorry."
His sudden serious apology made Katherine feel uncomfortable.
Katherine replied, "Forget it. Anyway, I kissed you first. We are both responsible for this mess. As long as you stop exploiting me after the three months are up, it's fine!"
"No," he said in a deep voice.
Katherine frowned and then asked, "Alex, didn't we agree that it would end after three months? You don't want to extend it, do you?"
He narrowed his eyes, his deep gaze fixed on her. "Are you afraid?"
Katherine nodded vigorously and said, "Of course! I can't be stuck at the Melville Manor forever, following your arrangements. I hope you can keep your word and give me back my freedom on time!"
Alex's eyes darkened. "Katherine, I can let you go now and give you your freedom."
Katherine's eyes lit up. "Really?"
Alex said, "Really."
"Thank you, then I'm leaving! Goodbye forever!" She eagerly tried to pull her hand away and leave.
But Alex grabbed her wrist and pulled her back!
His brows furrowed coldly. "Did I say you could leave?"
Katherine looked confused. "Didn't you just say you'd let me go? Alex, are you going back on your word so quickly?"
Alex said, "I'll let you go. I won't force you to play the role of Mrs. Melville anymore, but I hope you'll consider becoming my real wife."
Katherine stared at him in shock, wondering if she had heard wrong. Did he want her to be his real wife?
If she understood correctly, was Alex indirectly proposing?
"Stunned?" He lifted a long finger and tapped her nose, trying to get her attention back on him.
Katherine snapped out of it but still looked dazed.
Alex continued, "Didn't you just ask why I needed to know how to take the subway? I'm telling you now, it's to prevent you from ditching me and taking the subway alone. What if I can't catch up because I don't know how to buy a ticket?"
As he said this, his large hand naturally slid down her wrist, intertwining his fingers with hers, as if he was genuinely worried she might run away at any moment.
Katherine's heart fluttered. Every word and action from Alex left her feeling chaotic and utterly confused.
She even instinctively looked around, suspecting that someone from the Melville family might be spying on them, which was why Alex was putting on this act.
Seeing her looking around like that, Alex knew Katherine must be imagining some strange scenarios again!
Alex straightened her face and continued walking with her, to avoid missing the next subway train.
As they walked, Alex solemnly called her name, "Katherine, let's start over."
Katherine tilted her head, raised an eyebrow, and looked at him incredulously. "How do we start?"
Alex said, "Let's start by dating. Would you give me a chance?"
Katherine furrowed her brows and, without much thought, said, "Alex, I don't think we…"
Before she could finish saying "are suitable," he interrupted her.
He didn't let her finish and continued, "Don't be so hasty to reject me. Give me a chance to pursue you again. Rest assured, I won't just make you fit into my life; I'll also adapt to your lifestyle. If you like taking the subway, eating street food, going to escape rooms, or playing murder mystery games, I can join you. Of course, I'll also take you to the finest restaurants and let you enjoy the best life has to offer. Anything you like, anything I have, I'll give it all to you."
Hearing these words from a man as handsome as Alex, with a voice as deep as a cello, which girl wouldn't be moved?
Katherine's heart skipped a few beats, but she curled her lips into a sarcastic smile. "Alex, don't you feel awkward saying these things? Not long ago, you were still…"
Katherine's complaint was drowned out by the roar of the arriving subway.
The subway pulled into the station, bringing noise until it stopped.
She didn't know whether Alex heard her or not. He didn't respond, and just held her hand as they boarded the subway together.
It was rush hour, and the subway was packed. There were no seats available, so they had to stand.
Alex's height and demeanor made him stand out in the crowded subway. Girls in the carriage kept sneaking glances at him.
Katherine was forced to squeeze into his arms, with no room to move.
Their bodies were pressed together, and she could even feel his heartbeat.
Katherine felt awkward and wanted to move away from Alex to keep some distance.
But they were surrounded by the crowd, and Alex wouldn't allow Katherine to have any physical contact with other males under his watch.
He wrapped his arm around her, pulling her closer, and gently commanded, "Stay still."
Katherine was unhappy, but then she heard Alex lean down and softly explain above her head, "There's nothing between Scarlett and me. To me, she is just someone who saved my life. I told you before, she once saved me, and her health deteriorated because of it. I owe her, so I can't ignore her."
So Alex had heard her complaint before they got on the subway and was now responding to it.
Katherine's tone was sarcastic. "She saved you, so you decided to marry her?"
Alex's brows furrowed. "You're talking nonsense! She was only ten years old at the time; how could I have any thoughts about her?"
Katherine snorted, "She's grown up now; you can have thoughts about her now!"
Alex knew Katherine was speaking out of anger, and he felt a bit pleased that she was upset because it meant she cared about him. His lips curved into a smile.
Her anger meant she cared about him.
Alex gently rubbed his chin against the top of her head. "Do you really want me to marry someone else?"
Katherine mumbled, "Do whatever you want; it's not like I can stop you!"
Alex added, "Then what if I offer you my body and my heart? Will you take them?"
