Chapter 305 Why Did You Push Me?
Scarlett let out a painful moan, her eyes wide with terror. "Katherine, why... why did you push me?"
Sophie was stunned and glared at Katherine. "Katherine, it's you again! You never stop trying to hurt Scarlett!"
Katherine's hands hung loosely at her sides. She paused for a moment, then smirked.
Again!
Scarlett had gone to great lengths to get her to see the so-called birthday gift, but when the gift didn't work out, she pulled this stunt.
You can't teach an old dog new tricks!
Sophie carefully helped Scarlett sit up. "Scarlett, are you okay? Does it hurt?"
Scarlett's eyes filled with tears. "Sophie, my foot... it hurts a lot."
Sophie panicked. "Your foot? Oh no, could it be broken? What do we do?"
She anxiously checked Scarlett's foot but couldn't see any visible injury. She shot a worried look at Katherine, who was still smirking.
"Katherine, how can you smile? Do you have any humanity left? Scarlett didn't provoke you and even invited you to see her performance, yet you pushed her down the stairs! If anything happens to her foot, Bernard won't let you off!"
Katherine remained unfazed. "You need evidence to back up your words! Do you have any proof that I pushed her?"
Sophie retorted, "I was right there. I'm a witness! Katherine, if you didn't push her, would Scarlett have fallen down the stairs on her own? Do you know how hard Scarlett has practiced for today's opera? She wouldn't injure herself before going on stage!"
Katherine smirked. "Not necessarily!"
Sophie, gritting her teeth, pointed at her. "You."
Scarlett weakly tugged on Sophie's arm. "It's okay, Sophie, you can't win against her. Just help me up. I should still be able to go on stage."
Sophie glared at Katherine one last time before trying to help Scarlett stand up.
Scarlett tried hard to stand but collapsed back to the ground in pain. "Ah! It hurts."
"Scarlett! Scarlett, what's wrong?" Sophie asked.
Scarlett answered, "My... my foot has no strength."
"What should we do?" said Sophie.
"What's going on?" Bernard's voice suddenly rang out, accompanied by his steady footsteps.
Hearing Bernard's voice, Sophie looked up as if grasping at hope. "Bernard, you're just in time! Katherine just pushed Scarlett down the stairs, and Scarlett's been complaining about foot pain. I'm worried she might have a fracture."
Bernard quickened his pace, rushing over to help his sister Scarlett, who was wearing stage makeup. "Scarlett, are you okay?"
Scarlett's voice was very weak, and she tried hard not to let her tears ruin her makeup. "Bernard, I'm fine, help me up. I still need to go on stage to sing for Mr. Ayers."
Bernard frowned with concern. "You can't even stand; how can you go on stage? Be good. Let's get your foot checked first!"
With that, he picked Scarlett up in his arms and sternly ordered, "Billy, get the family doctor over here right now!"
"Yes, Mr. Mitchell!" answered Billy.
Scarlett, unwilling to give up, struggled in Bernard's arms, tears almost falling. "No. Bernard, I'm fine. I want to perform... I already told Mr. Ayers I had a special gift for him. If I don't go on stage, he'll be so disappointed! Bernard, you know I've been preparing this gift for a long time."
Bernard frowned, lecturing, "Scarlett, be good! I'll explain to Grandpa. Right now, nothing is more important than your health. Stop making a fuss!"
Scarlett cried, "Bernard, no, I've prepared for so long. I don't want to give up now. Bernard, let me go; I want to go on stage; I'm really fine."
Bernard found it hard to move while holding the very agitated Scarlett, who wouldn't listen whatever he said.
Sophie, seeing this, worried about her friend's injury and felt sorry for her crush Bernard.
The more she thought about it, the angrier she got. She stormed over and pushed Katherine, making her stagger back several steps!
Sophie shouted, "Katherine, you culprit! Look at what you've done to Scarlett! You've ruined all her hard work! How are you going to take responsibility?"
Katherine steadied herself and brushed off the places Sophie had touched. "Miss Jones, please show some respect. I won't accept baseless accusations, nor will I take responsibility for something I didn't do."
Seeing her still refusing to admit guilt, Sophie, furious, wanted to push her again, but this time, Katherine calmly dodged.
Sophie missed and almost fell flat on her face!
"You, you dare to dodge! Katherine, Scarlett clearly got hurt because you pushed her. It's your fault she can't perform now, and you still have the nerve to act so righteous!" retorted Sophie.
Bernard's cold eyes stared at Katherine, his gaze filled with complex and dark anger, but he didn't say anything for now, focusing on his sister's injury.
Katherine felt Bernard's accusatory gaze and looked at Scarlett. She stubbornly refused to get her injury treated, which Katherine found laughable.
Others might not see it, but she could tell Scarlett was just acting, trying to make Bernard feel sorry for her and take it out on Katherine, driving her away.
Katherine stated, "I didn't push Miss Mitchell. If you don't believe me, call the police! Let them investigate. I'll fully cooperate with the police, but I won't accept baseless accusations."
Sophie snorted. "Baseless? Katherine, don't think we can't do anything without surveillance! I'm a witness, and the police will take my testimony! You want the police? Fine, I'll call them right now!"
Katherine remained unafraid, waiting for her to call the police.
But Scarlett, in Bernard's arms, reached out to stop her. "Sophie, don't call the police. I think Katherine didn't do it on purpose, and I don't want to cause a scene at Grandpa's birthday party and make a joke out of it for the guests. Sophie, put the phone away!"
"But she..." Sophie knew Scarlett was right; it wasn't good to call the police at a joyous birthday party, but she didn't want to let Katherine off so easily.
Scarlett, aggrieved but firm, said, "Sophie, come and persuade Bernard to let me go. I still need to go on stage. It's almost time."
Bernard frowned deeply, holding his injured sister tightly to stop her from moving. "Scarlett!"
Sophie felt sorry for her friend, who still insisted on performing despite her injury. Like Bernard, Sophie was worried about her injury.
Suddenly, an idea flashed through Sophie's mind, and she had a good idea!
So, Sophie arrogantly said, "Katherine, Scarlett's foot injury is related to you! Now, she can't go on stage, but if you can save the day, it won't be in vain for Scarlett to let you off!"
Katherine raised an eyebrow, genuinely curious. "Save the day? How?"
