Chapter 457 Why Does Bernard Value Her
Katherine's words made Scarlett's smile almost vanish as she furrowed her brows.
She couldn't get anything from Bernard, so she tried her luck with Katherine. But Katherine's words felt like a jab about her falling out of favor with Bernard.
Not wanting Katherine to get the upper hand, Scarlett replied casually, "Yeah, you're right, Katherine. I'll ask Bernard about it later!"
With a smile, Scarlett turned to look out the car window, her expression darkening as she clenched her teeth.
"Katherine, we're at the company. I need to take Bernard his lunch. Want to come with me?"
Katherine, half-asleep and uninterested, replied, "No, I'll wait here. But hurry up; I'm not very patient today."
Scarlett didn't push. "Alright, wait here, Katherine. I need to discuss something about Alex with you later!"
Katherine gave a faint "mm," still uninterested.
Scarlett shot her a glare before getting out with the lunch and heading into the Mitchell Group.
Outside the CEO's office, Billy stopped her. "Ms. Mitchell, why are you here again? Mr. Mitchell said you don't need to bring him lunch anymore."
Scarlett smiled sweetly. " I'm worried he won't eat well with all his work. Can you tell Bernard I brought his favorite food and he should eat it while it's hot?"
Billy frowned and extended his hand. "Ms. Mitchell, please give me the food. I'll make sure he gets it when he's done."
Scarlett didn't hand it over, looking at Billy with pleading eyes. "Billy, is Bernard really that busy? He hasn't been home for days, and I miss him."
Billy looked troubled. Bernard had been avoiding home to escape Scarlett and her explanations.
"He's been very busy, working overtime. But don't worry, I'll remind him to eat. Just leave the food with me."
Scarlett, on the verge of tears, didn't believe him. "Billy, I know I was wrong to lie to Bernard and scheme against Katherine for Alex. I've realized my mistakes. I even gave Katherine a ride just now! Why won't Bernard see me?"
Billy's expression changed. "Ms. Galatea is here too?"
Scarlett hoped showing her remorse would make Billy speak kindly to Bernard on her behalf.
Scarlett mentioned giving Katherine a ride to show she was trying to make amends.
But Billy seemed fixated on the fact that Katherine was here. "Katherine's here too?"
Scarlett nodded, puzzled. "Yeah, I saw her walking and gave her a ride. Let me see Bernard, then I'll leave. Katherine's waiting downstairs for me to take her home!"
Billy thought for a moment. "Ms. Mitchell, please wait here. I'll inform Mr. Mitchell."
Scarlett smiled, thinking she had succeeded. If Billy mentioned her repentance, Bernard wouldn't stay mad.
As expected, Bernard soon came out to see her.
"Bernard! I brought your favorite roasted vegetables!" Scarlett rushed to him, trying to be affectionate.
But Bernard coldly pushed her away, scanning the area. "Where's Katherine? Didn't she come with you?"
Scarlett was stunned. Why was Bernard focused on Katherine?
"Katherine's waiting in the car downstairs! Bernard, I've made up with her. She got in my car, so she's willing to forgive me! I know I was wrong. Please don't be mad at me anymore."
She tried to snuggle into his arms again.
Bernard placed a hand on her shoulder, stopping her. "Why didn't she come up?"
Scarlett furrowed her brows, feeling Bernard's concern for Katherine was excessive but didn't show it.
"Bernard, I invited her, but she didn't want to come up. She said she'd wait in the car, so I didn't force her."
Bernard's eyes darkened with disappointment. "You invited her, and she didn't want to come up?"
Scarlett nodded.
Bernard felt helpless. Katherine didn't want to come up because she didn't want to see her disappointing brother.
Billy, understanding the situation, stepped forward. "Sir, should I go and invite Ms. Galatea up?"
Bernard nodded. "Yes, speak to her nicely and ask her to come up."
"Got it!" Billy respectfully took the order and left.
Bernard watched Billy leave, worried he might not persuade Katherine. He wanted to go himself but felt it might be too obvious.
For the first time, Scarlett saw unease on Bernard's face because of Katherine.
Curious, she asked, "Bernard, why do you care so much about Katherine? You even sent Billy to invite her personally?"
Bernard snapped out of his thoughts and looked at Scarlett coldly.
"She saved Grandpa's life, and our family has always neglected her. And you know what you've done to her! Our family was wrong. Shouldn't I show her some respect?"
