Chapter 584 My Cell Phone

Katherine glanced around the yard of Melville Manor one last time. She wasn't coming back. The only thing she'd miss was Charles.

The day flew by in a blur of meals and moments.

That evening, after her bath, Katherine was about to tell Charles a bedtime story when her phone buzzed again.

It was Alex. Again.

'What's his deal? Calling me every day now?' she thought, rolling her eyes.

Trying not to sound too annoyed, she picked up. "Hey, what's up?"

"Are you asleep?" Alex's voice was soft, like he was trying to smooth things over from their last chat.

"If I was, would I be answering?" Katherine shot back, not hiding her irritation.

Alex's voice got a bit more serious. "Didn't mean to wake you."

"If you didn't want to wake me, you wouldn't call at this hour," she snapped.

There was a pause, then Alex's tone softened. "I've been busy. Just wanted to check in. How was your day? Did you eat?"

Hearing his concern made her stomach turn. She tuned him out and handed the phone to Charles. "Here, your dad wants to talk. Have fun."

Charles's face lit up. "Daddy!"

He mimicked Katherine, "Hello, hello, Daddy!"

Alex sighed on the other end. "I'm here, buddy."

Charles beamed. "Daddy, come back soon! I miss you."

"Okay, be good while I'm away," Alex replied.

"I'll be good! I'll listen to Daddy!" Charles promised.

Alex then asked, "What's your mom doing?"

Charles's face fell. "No mom, no."

The mom he remembered was Scarlett, but she was always mean to him.

Alex sighed. "What's Kate doing?"

Charles looked at Katherine with big eyes. "Kate's right here! Kate's awesome, Charles likes Kate!"

Alex's voice softened. "I like her too."

Katherine couldn't hear Alex's side of the conversation, just Charles's excited chatter. Holding the phone for him was getting old fast, so she took it back. "Alex, anything else? I need to get Charles to sleep."

Alex's voice had a hint of guilt. "Thanks for looking after a kid who’s got nothing to do with you."

Katherine scoffed. "Spend more time with him when you can."

She hung up, feeling irritated.

Katherine tossed the phone aside, lay down, and hugged Charles, singing him a lullaby.

A lullaby did the trick, putting Charles to sleep and calming Katherine's nerves.

The next morning.

Breakfast at the Melville house was early, thanks to Sandra personally overseeing it.

After a quick bite, Sandra was all set to take Katherine for a stroll at Arborwood Grove, with Fiona and Charles tagging along.

The bodyguards at the door looked like they wanted to stop them, but one glare from Sandra made them back off, only daring to report to Alex.

With Sandra in charge, the car smoothly rolled out of Melville Manor.

In the car, Sandra patted Katherine's hand. "Katherine, I had them pack a bunch of sandwiches and burgers. If you get hungry, you and Charles can munch in the car!"

Katherine smiled. "Sandra, you didn't have to go all out. We can grab something at a restaurant if we get hungry."

Sandra shook her head. "No way! You're pregnant. Who knows if the food outside is fresh? Better safe than sorry!"

Half an hour later, they parked near Arborwood Grove.

The square was buzzing with life—pigeons fluttering, people strolling, and performers dancing.

Sandra was glued to the dance performance while Katherine stood beside her, scoping out the area.

Just as she thought, the bodyguards were tailing them, with several cars parked nearby, eyes on them.

Some guards had even blended into the crowd, keeping a close watch.

Katherine thought for a moment. "Sandra, you stay and enjoy the dance. Fiona and I will take Charles to buy some pigeon feed."

Sandra nodded. "Alright, but be careful! Fiona, keep an eye on Katherine!"

Fiona rolled her eyes. "Got it, Sandra! How many times are you gonna remind me?"

Sandra shot her a look. "If I don't, you won't remember! Now go with Katherine and get that pigeon feed!"

Fiona, holding Charles, followed Katherine to a nearby shop.

Just as Katherine picked out the pigeon feed and was about to pay, someone from the crowd snatched her phone and bolted!

The thief dashed through the pigeons, causing chaos and even disrupting the dance performance.

Katherine was stunned and yelled, "My phone! It has important stuff on it. Catch that thief!"

Several bodyguards in the crowd sprang into action. "Mrs. Melville! Are you okay?"

Katherine, frantic, ordered, "Grab my phone! It's got crucial info for Mr. Melville! Hurry up!"
