Chapter 365 Pocket Watch

There were two special rooms upstairs. One belonged to Bernard's biological parents, and the other to his sister Laura.

These rooms have been untouched for fifteen years and are off-limits in the Mitchell family.

Servants need Bernard's permission to clean them.

Bernard closed the door and sat on the small chair by the vanity, which felt cramped for his six-foot frame but was full of childhood memories.

He was ten years older than Laura and often took care of her more than their parents did.

Every night, he read fairy tales to her until she fell asleep.

Back then, the family was relatively peaceful.

Then, it came out that his father had an affair and a child outside the marriage.

His mother was devastated, leading to constant arguments and cold wars.

Whenever his parents fought, he would take Laura to their room, read to her, and play to distract her from the chaos.

Later, rumors spread that Laura wasn't a Mitchell but was his mother's child with another man.

One day, while Bernard was at school, his grandparents had his father take Laura for a paternity test to quash the rumors.

His mother saw this as a huge insult and a great harm to Laura, and she opposed it fiercely.

The relationship between his parents broke down completely. After a big fight, his mother took Laura and left, never to return.

A year later, his father remarried a woman who had a daughter the same age as Laura.

That daughter, Scarlett, became his beloved half-sister.

At the time, Bernard was still a minor and had no say in family matters.

But he refused to let his stepmother live in his mother's room or his half-sister in Laura's room.

His father respected his wishes and moved with his stepmother to another room.

Initially, he didn't accept Scarlett as his sister. Though they lived under the same roof, he ignored the new mother and daughter.

Over time, he noticed Scarlett was a lot like Laura in her actions, expressions, and even the birthmark between her eyebrows.

Scarlett loved following him around, calling his name all the time. No matter how cold he was, she never gave up.

Gradually, he accepted her and poured all his love for Laura into Scarlett, not letting her suffer any grievances.

To this day, he feels he might have spoiled her too much.

Scarlett has become obsessed with winning Alex's heart, losing her innocence and kindness, and her methods have become increasingly evil.

If today's incident was really Scarlett hurting Charles to frame Katherine, then she was beyond saving.

A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts, followed by Billy's voice.

"Mr. Mitchell, it's me."

"Come in," Bernard said, snapping back to reality.

With permission, Billy entered the room.

Bernard pinched the bridge of his nose, looking tired. "How's Charles doing?" he asked.

Billy replied, "The doctor said Charles has a serious head injury and a concussion. They stitched the wound and gave him meds, but he's been emotionally unstable. The doctor suggested he recover at home and go to the hospital daily for dressing changes. The wound needs to stay dry."

Bernard narrowed his eyes. Charles had been unlucky since being adopted, getting injured frequently and more seriously each time.

"Did the doctor say what caused the wound?" Bernard asked.

Billy said, "The doctor thinks it wasn't a sharp object like a chisel. It looks more like he hit a table corner or something."

Bernard furrowed his brow, feeling both disappointed and relieved. Scarlett had lied; Katherine didn't cause the injury with a chisel. But maybe Charles hurt himself, and Scarlett tried to frame Katherine. Scarlett's methods were vile, but at least she wasn't completely malicious. He needed to manage her better.

Billy spoke again, "Mr. Mitchell, Charles was very resistant to going to Ms. Mitchell's room, so I had him taken to the nanny's room for care."

Bernard's brows furrowed again. Charles's resistance to Scarlett made him wonder if she had really done something to harm him. His temples began to throb. "Got it. You can leave."

Billy didn't leave. "Mr. Mitchell, the pocket watch you lost in Kryptonix City has been found."

The pocket watch was a birthday gift from Laura, with a dial she had drawn herself fifteen years ago. It showed his birth time and a stick-figure portrait of him. He cherished it and always kept it with him. It went missing after a business trip to Kryptonix City.

"Where was it found?" Bernard asked.

Billy's expression was complicated. "It was found in the blood collection room of Kryptonix City Hospital, picked up by a young nurse. It fell when you took off your coat to donate blood."

Bernard nodded, relieved the watch was found.

But Billy's expression remained tense. "Mr. Mitchell, when we checked the hospital surveillance to find your watch, we found something odd."

Bernard raised an eyebrow. "What was it?"

Billy said, "After you left the blood collection room, the two nurses on duty secretly took your blood sample. We still don't know why."
