Chapter 287 Ms. Galatea still Cares About Me?

One guy said, "That's her. She matches the photo the boss sent. Tie her up!"

Another guy chimed in, "But she's pretty. Isn't it a waste to kill her?"

A third guy snapped, "You always think with your pants when you see a woman!"

A fourth guy added, "I'm just saying! She's a beauty. Killing her would be a waste!"

A fifth guy cut in, "Stop dreaming. The boss wants her dead. We gotta do it quick and clean. No time for your nonsense!"

After a sack was thrown over her head, a strong man twisted Katherine's hands behind her back and tied them tightly with sturdy rope.

She didn't fight back hard. Instead, she asked calmly, "Wait, did you get the wrong person?"

The leader's voice replied, "You're Katherine, right? We've got the right person. You're the one we want!"

Katherine was confused. "Why are you capturing me?"

"Because you pissed someone off. They don't want you around anymore," he answered.

"Who?" she asked.

"None of your business. Your time's up. Knowing more won't help you," he said.

Another guy sounded regretful. "Don't be scared. Since you're so pretty, I'll make it quick and painless."

As he spoke, the strong man dragged her into a deserted alley. She heard the sound of a blade being drawn.

With her hands bound and her head covered, she couldn't see a thing. She was at a complete disadvantage.

It was clear they weren't planning to kidnap her—they were going to kill her. No room for negotiation. It was a tough spot to get out of!

Was she really going to die here, at the hands of people she hadn't even seen, without knowing why?

No way!

She still had to help her mom uncover the truth from years ago, and she had a baby in her womb that needed her protection!

As Katherine urgently thought of a plan, she was interrupted by the screeching sound of sudden brakes!

Then came the sound of footsteps, steady and swift.

The leader was pissed. "Who are you? If you don't want to die, stay out of this!"

The newcomer didn't say a word, but the footsteps got closer and heavier!

In the next second, Katherine heard the sounds of a fierce fight.

Not knowing if the newcomer was friend or foe, Katherine took advantage of the chaos to move to a corner and quickly rubbed the rope on her wrists against the wall, trying to free her hands!

Suddenly, a series of hurried footsteps ran away, and everything went silent as if one side had been driven off.

Katherine didn't want to be caught by whoever was left, so she sped up her efforts to break the rope!

She sensed someone strong approaching, but the rope still wouldn't break, making her sweat with anxiety.

Suddenly, the sack over her head was yanked off and thrown aside.

Thank God, the rope finally snapped at that moment!

Without looking, Katherine swung a punch.

But a rough, large hand caught her fist, and a familiar, deep male voice said mockingly, "Ms. Galatea, is this how you repay your savior?"

Katherine came to her senses and saw that Alex had removed the sack from her head!

Her heart, filled with vigilance and defense, instantly calmed down as if she had taken a tranquilizer, and she breathed a sigh of relief.

She asked, "Mr. Melville, what are you doing here?"

Alex looked down at her coldly. "I was at the hospital. I told you to leave, but you didn't. At Tranquil Lily Cafe, I told you to get in the car, but you didn't. I save you, and you repay me by trying to hit me? If those guys had killed you, maybe in your next life, you'd learn to be more cautious!"

"I didn't know it was you!" Katherine frowned, then something clicked. "Wait, Mr. Melville, what do you mean by that? Did you know you knew someone was going to attack me?"

Alex didn't deny it. He just turned and started walking out of the alley.

Katherine, not getting an answer, followed him. "Do you know who the employer they mentioned is?"

Alex lit a cigarette, not looking at her, and grunted.

"Tell me, who is it?" Katherine was desperate to know who hated her enough to want her dead.

His voice was flat. "Your boss."

Katherine stopped, shocked. "Bernard? He hired someone to kill me? Why?"

Alex, walking slightly ahead, took a drag of his cigarette and exhaled slowly. "When Scarlett was in middle school, she was bullied by two classmates. Those two girls disappeared without a trace and have never been found."

Katherine was stunned.

Alex's words implied that Bernard, to avenge his sister Scarlett, had hired people to deal with those who bullied her.

So, at the hospital, Alex had already seen that Bernard had murderous intentions and tried to get her out of there.

At the cafe, he had anticipated what she might encounter and tried to get her into the car.

And she hadn't cooperated.

"Is Mr. Mitchell really that ruthless?" she asked.

Katherine didn't want to believe that her biological brother could be so heartless, even though she didn't acknowledge Bernard as her brother.

Alex glanced at her. "Did you think Bernard was a good person?"

Katherine was silent.

She didn't think Bernard was a good person, but she didn't expect him to be so extreme, willing to kill for Scarlett.

Alex added coldly, "And Jonathan, stay away from him too!"

What did this have to do with Jonathan? Katherine was puzzled. "Mr. Melville, do you think there's no good person in the world except you?"

Alex looked at her coldly, his tone indifferent. "I'm not a good person either."

Katherine chuckled lightly. "So you know that!"

Alex, holding a cigarette between his fingers, turned his head slightly, squinting at her through the smoke. "Whether I'm good or not depends on who I'm dealing with."

Katherine, who had been smiling, felt uncomfortable under his meaningful gaze, and her smile froze.

Alex didn't seem to expect her to understand; he snorted coldly, looked ahead, and continued smoking.

Katherine looked at his side profile as he smoked. He was indeed handsome, but she frowned. "Mr. Melville, you should smoke less. This is your 16th cigarette today!"

Alex paused, then turned to look at her, his deep eyes filled with ambiguity. "What did you say?"

Katherine realized her words were inappropriate, turned her head, and said, "I didn't say anything!"

She quickened her pace, trying to distance herself from Alex.

But Alex raised his arm to block her path, squinting his dark eyes, and asked again, "Ms. Galatea, why are you counting how many cigarettes I smoke? Are you concerned about me?"
