Chapter 278 Jonathan's Consistency
Katherine said, "Miss Mitchell, shouldn't I be the one avoiding you? Every time I get involved with you, it ends badly for me!"
She suddenly pushed the door open and walked in, her face showing a lazy, tired, and sarcastic smile.
Seeing her return, Alex's dark eyebrows furrowed, his gaze clearly expressed dissatisfaction. He thought, 'What are you doing back here?'
Katherine glanced at his expression and got the message. She shrugged, conveying her stance with her eyes. She thought, 'I haven't done anything wrong, so why should I run away?'
Alex gave her a cold look and then ignored her.
Scarlett saw Katherine return, which was exactly what she wanted. Her eyes flashed with a plan, and she stepped forward to make peace.
She said, "Katherine, let's call it a day! Whether you admit your mistake or not, I'm willing to forgive you. As long as you don't harm my Charles again, I won't hold a grudge against you."
Seeing her approach, Katherine quickly stepped back with a disgusted expression, as if swatting away a bee, rejecting Scarlett's closeness.
Katherine answered, "No! Miss Mitchell, please don't forgive me, I don't need it! What I need now is to prove my innocence!"
"Katherine." Scarlett, portraying herself as a kind-hearted victim who wasn't appreciated, continued trying to persuade Katherine to reform. "Please don't be so stubborn. I really want to reconcile with you."
Katherine had seen enough of Scarlett's act and didn't respond. Instead, she looked at Bernard. "Mr. Mitchell, I just heard Mr. Melville say that the restaurant's surveillance might be repairable, so please take me and Miss Mitchell to retrieve the footage and clear my name!"
Before Bernard could say anything, Scarlett interjected, "Bernard, forget it. Let's not bother with her; let her go! I'm tired and don't want to fuss anymore. It's more important to take care of Charles!"
Katherine raised an eyebrow and asked, "Miss Mitchell, why do you seem so afraid of retrieving the footage? I'm the so-called 'culprit,' and I'm not afraid. What are you afraid of?"
Scarlett was momentarily speechless, feeling her guilt exposed by Katherine.
Seeing Katherine's firm and straightforward demeanor, Bernard's suspicion grew, and he began to believe she might be innocent, finding Scarlett's reaction odd.
Scarlett had insisted on seeking justice for Charles, but after Alex mentioned the surveillance could be repaired, she changed her attitude and wanted to let it go.
Could it be that Scarlett, to win Alex's heart and turn him against Katherine, falsely accused Katherine of harming Charles?
Thinking of this, Bernard's gaze towards his sister Scarlett became evasive. If Scarlett were lying, he would feel like he never truly knew her.
The Scarlett he knew had always been so kind and innocent, how could she be so scheming!
Scarlett sensed her brother's doubt. She panicked but managed to keep her composure.
The more she was suspected, the more she couldn't lose her cool. The matter wasn't concluded yet. She wouldn't admit defeat now!
Scarlett quickly thought it over and immediately put on an offended and angry expression, telling Katherine, "I'm not afraid. I'm just thinking of you. I don't want your outcome to be too miserable! Katherine, you must know that once the footage is retrieved, Bernard will definitely use it as evidence to sue you for intentional harm and vent his anger for Charles and me! And I'm only sparing you criminal charges because you once helped Alex deal with our elders, considering you an old friend! But why are you still unrepentant, insisting on a dead end?"
Her words were righteous and compassionate, giving the impression to those unaware of the truth think Scarlett was a kind-hearted, forgiving angel.
Katherine saw through her act and smiled indifferently. "Miss Mitchell, I appreciate your kindness, but I'm someone who dares to face the consequences. If the footage shows I did what you claim, I'll go to jail without a word, no matter how many years, I won't appeal!"
Scarlett glared at her, secretly gritting her teeth, but didn't forget to put on a tearful, aggrieved look.
She knew clearly that Katherine had cornered her! If she didn't support retrieving the footage, she would seem very guilty and suspicious. Even Bernard's gaze had turned doubtful.
"Fine! As you wish!" Scarlett, after putting on a show, now displayed a look of helplessness and frustration, taking a deep breath and saying, "Bernard, I originally wanted to spare Katherine, fearing you'd be too harsh on her after seeing the footage! But Katherine doesn't appreciate it, even implying I'm lying and afraid. This is too much! Since that's the case, I won't hold back anymore! Bernard, let's go to the restaurant and check the footage now!"
Seeing Scarlett's reaction becoming reasonable, Bernard's suspicion dissipated. "Alright, let's go!"
Charles's nanny had arrived at the hospital. Scarlett gave her a few instructions and felt at ease to leave.
Meanwhile, Katherine became wary of Scarlett's change in attitude.
Scarlett knew the footage would only prove she was lying, yet she suddenly wasn't afraid to retrieve it. There must be some trick.
After instructing the nanny, Bernard put his arm around Scarlett's shoulder and turned. His handsome eyes filled with hostility as he glanced at the deep-in-thought Katherine, his tone sarcastic and sharp. "What are you daydreaming about? Don't you want to prove your innocence? Then let's go!"
Katherine snapped out of it, nodded, and followed Bernard and Scarlett out.
Jonathan followed Katherine, asking in a low voice, "Katherine, where did you go?"
Katherine replied, "Nowhere, just wandered around to get some fresh air."
Jonathan said, "I see. I thought you left me alone!"
Katherine glanced at him sidelong. "Mr. Mostow, you're not a child. Why would I leave you? If you want to go, just go yourself! It's none of your business here!"
Jonathan smiled seductively. "No, we came together, so we should leave together. That's called seeing things through to the end!"
Seeing Katherine and Jonathan walking together, Alex narrowed his eyes coldly. Just then, he received a call from Leander reporting, "Mr. Melville, I've checked all the hospital's obstetrics and gynecology records. Ms. Galatea was indeed..."
