Chapter 605 Taking Off the Hat and Mask
Katherine flashed a grin at some of the employees and then started her solo tour.
The employee hall had these massive floor-to-ceiling windows. She stepped out to check it out, and the view was just as killer as she thought, giving her a sweet look over most of Janetrick.
But, no matter how dope the view was from these windows, it had nothing on the view from Alex's office.
From Alex's office, one could see the most stunning sight in Janetrick, Whispering Willow Lake. Catching the sunrise in the morning and the sunset in the evening, it was the perfect way to chill after a hectic day.
Thinking about it now, Katherine felt it was such a waste to let Alex have that prime office. She overheard some employees saying Alex wouldn't be around, so she got the bright idea to sneak a peek at his office.
Katherine slipped in while others were distracted.
The CEO's office was even more high-end than the rest, with a sleek vibe that screamed mature and steady.
Standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, Katherine gazed out at Whispering Willow Lake, sighing to herself. 'It's just as gorgeous as I imagined. But no matter how pretty the view is, this place isn't for hanging out long. I should bounce now. There's a client lounge in the employee hall outside. I'll wait there for the car Jonathan sent, and when it gets here, I'll head down.'
Katherine had barely been in the CEO's office for a minute when she decided to leave. But as soon as she opened the door, she bumped into a plump woman.
Seeing someone coming in as she opened the door, Katherine instinctively freaked out. Seeing it was a woman, she breathed a sigh of relief, thinking it was Alex.
Seeing a stranger coming out of Alex's office, Sophia looked suspicious and asked, "What are you doing? Who let you into the CEO's office?"
Actually, Katherine recognized Sophia right away, the woman in the photo Frank had shown her, Alex's legit wife.
Katherine didn't want to get into it with her. She just apologized and explained, "Sorry, I took a wrong turn."
After saying that, Katherine tried to sidestep her and leave.
Sophia frowned suspiciously but wasn't about to let it slide. "Hold up!"
Katherine didn't want to stop but had to, otherwise, it would look even sketchier. "Miss, is there something else you need?"
Sophia crossed her arms and walked up to Katherine, giving her the once-over and thinking, 'This chick is wearing a ton of clothes and a mask, super sketchy!'
She asked, "Are you an employee of the Melville Group?"
Katherine shook her head honestly. "Nope."
Sophia's brow furrowed. "If you're not an employee of the Melville Group, how'd you get in? This is the CEO's office, and you just waltz in?"
Katherine calmly explained, "I'm a guest here for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. I came upstairs to check things out and accidentally took a wrong turn looking for the restroom."
Sophia clearly wasn't buying it and gave her another once-over with a skeptical look. "You're a guest for the ribbon-cutting ceremony? Took a wrong turn looking for the restroom? Do you think I'm that gullible? How come I don't know there's someone like you among the ribbon-cutting guests?"
Katherine said, "I'm Moon, the designer of the Melville Group Tower. If you don't believe me, call the head honcho at Crescent Group, the contractor for the Melville Group Tower, to confirm. I really just took a wrong turn, and I've got urgent stuff to handle, so I'm out."
With that, Katherine flashed the badge she showed the employees earlier and handed it to Sophia before trying to slip past her.
Sophia glanced at the badge, which indeed said [Special Guest Moon]. But her gut was screaming that this heavily bundled-up woman was up to something.
After a moment of thinking, Sophia stopped her again.
Being stopped again, Katherine, with only her eyes peeking out above the mask, looked a bit ticked off. "Miss, is there something else you need?"
Sophia held up the badge Katherine had just handed her. "This is a legit Melville Group badge, but there's no photo on it. How do I know you didn't just snag it from downstairs?"
Katherine chuckled, "Miss, like I said, if you have any doubts, call the person in charge of the Crescent Group to confirm."
Sophia was dismissive. "How can I confirm? Even if I call, they can't describe what Moon looks like. Even if they do, I wouldn't know if you're Moon. Look at you, all bundled up with a hat, mask, and layers. How can I see what you look like? Unless you take off your hat and mask!"
Katherine refused, "Sorry, you don't have the right to ask that of me."
After saying this, Katherine tried to sidestep her again.
Sophia raised her arm to block her way. "If you don't take off your hat and mask to show me your face, don't blame me for not letting you go."
Katherine raised an eyebrow. "What right do you have to stop me?"
Sophia said, "Because you entered the CEO's office without permission! And you're wearing so many clothes, with a bulge around your stomach. I have a reasonable suspicion that you might have stolen something from the CEO's office and hidden it in your clothes."
The bulge in her clothes was her eight-month pregnant belly, but she didn't want to say that.
Katherine was annoyed. She regretted not resisting her curiosity and entering Alex's office. "If you suspect I stole something, you should check the office to see if anything is missing, not just suspect me based on a feeling."
Sophia spread her hands. "That's not my office. How could I remember everything in there? I can only suspect you based on my gut. But don't worry, I'm respectful. I won't search you. I'll call the cops and let them check your ID and see if you swiped anything."
'This woman is really difficult! I can't let her call the cops. If the police come, they'll definitely ask for my ID, and everyone will know who I am,' Katherine thought before she calmly looked at Sophia.
Katherine suggested, "Do you really have to suspect me? I am indeed a guest for today's ribbon-cutting ceremony. The media took photos of me downstairs during the ceremony. You can call them up to confirm if it's me."
Sophia said, "When I came up just now, I saw that the media had already left. No one can confirm it for you!.But if you take off your hat and mask, I can let you go."
