Chapter 984 Lying to Hellen

Christina looked at him, hesitating whether to get in the car.

It wasn't until someone honked that she hurriedly got in the car. "Sorry."

"You didn't do anything wrong, why apologize?" Ruben started the car as soon as she was seated. "I'll take you home. Where do you live? Did you move out with Bernard, or are you staying at the Mitchell mansion?"

Christina paused while adjusting her dress and gave an awkward smile. "We live at the Mitchell mansion. Just drop me off there."

The two didn't say much on the way until they reached outside the Mitchell mansion. Ruben stopped the car and spoke, "Christina, let's connect on social media! We're old classmates, so it would be great to catch up and hang out sometime!"

Christina hesitated for a moment, then nodded and took out her phone to add him as a friend.

Putting away his phone, Ruben smiled, "Christina, it was nice seeing you today. Goodbye."

After waving goodbye, Christina turned and walked towards the Mitchell mansion.

Watching Christina enter the Mitchell mansion, Ruben's eyes showed a hint of regret and complexity.

If he had come back earlier, would everything have been different?

Christina didn't know what Ruben was thinking. She just felt very tired from everything that happened that day. Her body was exhausted from wearing a dress and high heels, and her mind was even more tired from constantly thinking.

She had once fantasized about telling Ruben her feelings when she saw him again, but now, given her current situation, she couldn't say it and didn't deserve to be close to someone as excellent and gentle as him.

"Christina, you're back!"

Christina looked up at the sound and saw Hellen coming to greet her. She quickly gathered her thoughts and showed a sweet smile. "Grandma, why are you still up so late?"

"I was worried since you and Bernard hadn't come back yet. I wanted to wait for you." Hellen held her hand and looked at her clothes with a smile. "Christina, you look very beautiful today. Did you go out to eat with Bernard?"

Christina smiled and nodded. "Yes, Grandma, I went to a banquet with him!"

Hellen smiled, "Where's Bernard? Didn't he come back with you?"

"He... he had something to do and will come back later." Christina couldn't tell Hellen that Bernard went to take another woman home.

Hellen seemed to sense something, holding her hand and sitting down on the sofa. "Christina, tell me, did Bernard upset you? Otherwise, how could he let you come back alone?"

Christina was surprised by Hellen's sharpness, but she couldn't show it. She smiled and shook her head. "No, Grandma, don't overthink it. He really had something to do, so he let me come back first. He didn't upset me."

"Okay, as long as you're fine. Since Bernard wants you by his side, I believe you must be very special to him." Hellen gently patted her hand. "Don't worry too much. Bernard may seem cold on the outside, but he's warm on the inside. You'll see in time."

Christina knew that Hellen sincerely hoped she and Bernard could get along well.

Unfortunately, Hellen didn't know that Bernard had deceived her. This marriage was a sham from the start. She and Bernard had no real relationship now and would have none in the future.

Bernard probably had Virginia in his heart. They grew up together, and Bernard treated her differently.

Thinking about this made Christina feel stifled.

This wasn't her home. In a year, she would end this marriage and leave the Mitchell family forever.

"Christina, what are you thinking about so deeply?"

Hellen's words brought Christina back to reality. She smiled awkwardly. "Nothing, Grandma, I was just thinking about what to make for breakfast tomorrow!"

"I know you're good at cooking, but you don't have to do these things. Bernard brought you here to enjoy life, not to work hard." Hellen said earnestly.

Christina was a sensible child, but Hellen didn't want her to do these things. After all, they had hired help at home.

Christina knew that Hellen cared for her and didn't want her to work so hard, but she had been deceiving Hellen. Doing more for Hellen could lessen her guilt.

"By the way, Christina, did Bernard say what he had to do? It's so late, what could be so urgent?" Hellen asked again.

Christina suddenly became uneasy. If Hellen found out that Bernard took Virginia home, she would definitely discover their fake marriage.

Christina lowered her head, avoiding Hellen's sharp gaze. "He said there were some urgent matters at the company, so he went back to the office."

"The company is closed; what urgent matters could there possibly be? Even if there were, he should have brought you back first! How long could it really take?" Hellen grumbled unhappily.

Christina frowned slightly. She was not used to lying, especially not to someone who treated her well.

Hellen was so good to her, and Christina really didn't want to lie to her, feeling extremely guilty.

"Grandma, Bernard arranged for Billy to bring me back. He didn't leave me there alone."

Hellen looked at her furrowed brows and felt very sorry for her. "Christina, you silly child, still lying to cover for Bernard! I saw it just now; it wasn't Billy's car that brought you back!"

"Grandma, you saw it." Christina looked up suddenly, realizing that Hellen had seen Ruben bring her back.

Hellen knew Christina wouldn't lie on purpose, only to avoid worrying her, so she gently patted Christina's shoulder. "Christina, don't be nervous. I'm not blaming you. I just feel you're being wronged!"

"Grandma, I'm not wronged. I understand Bernard. It's normal for him to be busy managing such a big company!" Christina's eyes were full of sincerity.

"Alright, I understand. It's getting late now, you should go rest."

Christina wanted to say more but feared the more she said, the more unclear it would become. Hellen signaled her to go rest, and she had no choice but to go to her room. She closed the door and quickly called Bernard.

The phone rang for a long time without being answered, making Christina feel even more stifled and irritable.

Unable to reach him, she sent Bernard a message: [Grandma knows you didn't bring me home. I told her you went to the office to handle something. Don't let her find out when you get back.]

After sending the message, Christina put down her phone. She didn't know if Bernard would see the message before coming home, but she had done all she could.
