Chapter 95 An Electrifying Encounter with Alex
Katherine escaped from the warehouse, wandering alone in the pitch-black wilderness outside.
The kidnappers had thrown away her phone while she was unconscious. Now it was overcast, with thick clouds covering the night sky, leaving no trace of moonlight.
In the darkness, Katherine couldn't find her way and decided to find a hidden spot to stay until daylight.
This suburban wasteland was worse than the real wilderness.
In the wild, she could at least find a cave to hide in, but here it was, just a flat plain with nothing but thorns and weeds, not even a tree to provide cover!
Raindrops started to fall from the sky; it was raining.
With no place to take shelter, she had to let the rain drench her.
Suddenly, she heard footsteps behind her, trampling through the wild grass, accompanied by the sweeping beam of a flashlight.
‘In this lonely place, who else can it be but the kidnappers' accomplices?’ Katherine thought.
Katherine held her breath and immediately crouched into the grass to hide.
The footsteps came closer and closer. A tall figure stopped just a meter away from her, shining the flashlight directly at her, blindingly bright.
"Come out!" The man's voice was cold and hard, full of menace.
Katherine knew her hiding spot had been discovered. She grabbed a handful of dirt and sprang out, flinging it fiercely at the man's face, hoping to blind him!
The opponent might have a gun, and she was unarmed. Confrontation was not an option. Only by blinding him could she have a chance to escape.
But the man reacted quickly, dodging the dirt and grabbing her wrist tightly!
Katherine felt a sense of doom. She struggled to free her hand while raising the other to attack.
"It's me." The man's voice was steady and strong.
Now that they were closer, the familiar tone made Katherine pause.
Immediately, she was pulled into a broad, warm embrace and held tightly!
Alex's large hand gently cupped the back of her head, soothing her like a frightened animal. "It's okay. You're safe now."
Katherine gradually relaxed her guarded stance, and then she asked, "Alex, how did you..."
"Are you hurt?" he then asked urgently.
Alex seemed unusually unsettled, his deep voice tinged with rare concern. He held her shoulders and gently pushed her back to examine her under the dim flashlight.
Katherine shook her head, blinking in disbelief.
How did Alex get here?
Didn't Alex say he wouldn't care and let the kidnappers do as they pleased?
He hadn't even asked about the ransom before impatiently hanging up the phone.
The rain intensified.
Seeing no obvious injuries on her, Alex eased his tense expression slightly. He took off his coat, draped it over her, covering her head to shield her from the rain, and said softly, "Sorry I'm late!"
Katherine was not used to Alex's unusual attitude. In fact, he wasn't late at all. He was quite fast!
It seemed like less than half an hour had passed since the fat kidnapper called Alex for ransom.
Even if he had driven straight from the city after hanging up, it would have taken nearly two hours.
Yet he arrived in less than half an hour, incredibly fast! How did he do it?
"Mr. Melville!" Leander called out. He came running, out of breath, quickly opening an umbrella to cover Mr. Melville.
Seeing Katherine in Mr. Melville's arms, Leander also breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank goodness we found Ms. Galatea! Ms. Galatea, are you alright?"
Katherine shook her head slightly, then answered, "I'm fine."
"That's good!" Leander was relieved. If anything had happened to Ms. Galatea, Mr. Melville would have been furious.
Today's events made it clear to Leander that Mr. Melville's concern for Ms. Galatea far exceeded the boundaries of a contractual marriage. Mr. Melville cared about Ms. Galatea very, very much.
"Mr. Melville, there's a thunderstorm coming, and the helicopter can't take off! I've arranged for a car nearby. It's here now. It would help if you took Ms. Galatea to the car first," Leander advised.
Katherine suddenly understood. No wonder he arrived so quickly. He came by helicopter!
Alex grunted in acknowledgment and then ordered, "You stay here and wait for the police. Make sure they capture every one of those people. Don't let any of them escape!"
Leander nodded. "Yes, sir. Don't worry!"
After giving his instructions, Alex picked Katherine up in his arms and strode towards the car ahead.
Leander followed with the umbrella to shield them.
Katherine felt a bit awkward and said, "Alex, I'm not hurt. I can walk by myself."
She tried to get down as she spoke.
Alex tightened his strong arms, holding her firmly. He warned in a low voice, "Don't move! If you keep struggling, I'll throw you into the ditch!"
Katherine didn't dare move, rolling her eyes. His good mood never lasted more than three seconds!
Alex carefully placed Katherine in the passenger seat, then reached over to fasten her seatbelt himself.
Fastening the seatbelt brought them very close together. Katherine felt uncomfortable and instinctively tried to do it herself. She grabbed the seatbelt, inadvertently pulling the man leaning over her even closer.
Alex was pulled down further, his chin naturally resting on her collarbone. As he turned his head, his lips accidentally brushed against her pale neck. His pupils contracted, his throat burning and dry. He swallowed hard and released his grip, standing up.
The electrifying touch made Katherine shiver all over. She turned her face away awkwardly, blinking uneasily.
Alex stood by the car door, staring down at her for a moment, his gaze intense.
At this moment, Katherine looked inexplicably alluring.
Then, he closed the car door, irritably loosened his tie, and walked around to the driver's seat, getting in.
The rain poured down as the car drove along the rural road, the windshield wipers swinging back and forth.
Inside the car, the two remained silent, and the atmosphere felt strange.
Katherine cleared her throat and asked, "Alex, didn't you say you wouldn't care about me and let the kidnappers do whatever they wanted? Why did you come to find me?"
Alex glanced at her sideways and replied, "You heard that?"
Katherine rested her chin on her hand, looking out the window, pouting, "I didn't just hear it. I was a bit upset!"
Alex kept his eyes on the road, explaining in a deep voice, "If I had shown any intention of rescuing you, those people wouldn't have let their guard down. They would have used the most brutal methods to torture you and provoke me. This matter had to be handled discreetly without spreading the word. Otherwise, more people would try to kidnap you to threaten me in the future. Even after we end this relationship, your life won't be peaceful."
That made sense!
Alex's special status meant many people would want to exploit his weaknesses.
Katherine smirked sarcastically, lazily resting her chin on her hand, turning to look at him. "So Alex knows that your status can bring trouble to others, huh?"
As she spoke, her eyes sparkled with a bit of mischief. Her red lips opened, revealing her white teeth.
Alex suddenly tensed his face, his eyes reddening, his throat growing even drier and hotter. Just a glance at her stirred a strange restlessness within him, coursing through his body.
A grown man wouldn't fail to understand what this feeling meant.
Suddenly, he slammed on the brakes!
The inertia threw Katherine forward, then pulled back by the seatbelt, frowning in surprise, asking, "Alex, what are you doing?"
"Get out!" he growled coldly.
Katherine was stunned, looking utterly confused, and then questioned, "Why? It's raining outside! What did I do to upset you?"
