Chapter 387 Opportunity

Alex saw the caller ID, frowned, but answered anyway.

Scarlett's anxious voice came through. "Alex, where are you?"

"Moonlight Manor," he replied.

"Are you busy?" she asked, sounding embarrassed.

"What's up?" Alex shot back.

"Charles just threw up and feels awful. He's calling for dad. Can you come over? He really needs you," Scarlett pleaded.

Alex glanced at Katherine beside him, paused for a couple of seconds, then asked, "What did the doctor say?"

Scarlett, choking up, said, "The doctor said it's just a normal reaction to the concussion, but Charles is scared and needs comfort. Can you come?"

Alex stayed silent.

Katherine chuckled. "Go ahead!"

She hadn't heard Scarlett but guessed it was her. Scarlett always used Charles as an excuse to call Alex.

Hearing Katherine, Alex hung up, turned to her, and fed her a piece of dessert. "Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere today."

Katherine was surprised. He usually never ignored Scarlett, given she was his lifesaver. But today, he refused.

She took a bite of the dessert, liked it, and reached for more, but Alex pulled it back. "It's too sweet. Don't eat too much."

Katherine frowned. "Even if I eat the whole thing, it's not that much! Give it to me!"

"No." Alex ate the piece himself to stop her from grabbing it.

Katherine pouted.

Bernard, unable to stand it, handed her another piece. "There are plenty. If you like it, I'll pack some for you."

Katherine looked at the identical dessert, didn't take it, and said, "Thanks, Mr. Mitchell, but I don't like it."

Bernard fell silent, awkwardly holding the dessert.

Alex, satisfied, patted Katherine's head. She didn't accept things from other men just because she was greedy.

Since finding out she was pregnant with his child, Alex learned that pregnant women should avoid too many sweets. No matter how much he wanted to spoil her, he couldn't let her eat too much.

Bernard sighed and put the dessert back. Katherine still ignored him, and he felt helpless.

He guessed the call was from Scarlett and understood the gist of it. Bernard pinched his brow, feeling a headache coming on.

Teresa suddenly stood up with a glass of wine. "Let's toast to Alex and Katherine! Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness!"

Alex and Katherine exchanged a glance, then raised their glasses to accept Teresa's blessing.

Teresa objected. "No! You two need to drink with your arms interwined! Right, everyone?"

Hilton Allen chimed in, "Yes!"

Alex didn't mind and looked at Katherine, raising an eyebrow for her opinion.

Katherine, a bit shy but not wanting to seem too reserved, hesitated for a moment before turning sideways and clinking her juice with Alex's.

Teresa was satisfied, downing her glass and leading the applause. The atmosphere heated up.

Hilton clapped. "Alex, Bernard has a special program for you and Katherine tonight. It'll be unforgettable!"

Alex looked at Bernard skeptically. Katherine was curious too.

Bernard had no good intentions for Alex, but he cared deeply for Katherine, his long-lost sister. He felt he owed her for the years she suffered and wanted to make amends, even if she didn't acknowledge him as her brother.

Before Hilton could spoil the surprise, fireworks exploded outside, casting a blue glow through the glass.

Hilton snapped his fingers. "Your special program is here! Let's check it out!"

Everyone followed Hilton to the terrace. The sky was filled with rare blue fireworks, creating a stunning scene.

Katherine, initially uninterested in Bernard's gift, was captivated by the beautiful display. Sharing this moment with someone she liked felt romantic and happy.

She turned to look at Alex, who was also looking at her. But then, his phone rang, disrupting the moment. He frowned and pressed reject, but the caller kept trying.

Alex sighed and patted her shoulder. "I'll take this call, see if it's urgent."

Katherine nodded. "Okay."

After Alex left, she looked up at the sky alone, her eyes showing a bit of complexity.

"So beautiful," Jonathan's voice said beside her.

Katherine smiled. "Yes, it is."

"I meant you," Jonathan replied.

Katherine was surprised. "Thanks for the compliment."

Jonathan smiled. "I've been busy with work. I wanted to come back and find you, but it seems I was a bit late."

"Not too late."

Jonathan's eyes lit up. "So, I still have a chance?"
