Chapter 354 I Trust Her Anyway

Katherine looked up calmly. "I'm innocent. What am I supposed to confess to?"

Bernard squinted. "If it wasn't you, why were you holding the murder weapon?"

Katherine held up the chisel. "This? Scarlett forced it on me, said it was for self-defense!"

Bernard frowned. "Katherine, do you realize how ridiculous that sounds?"

Katherine's gaze stayed steady. "I'm telling the truth. If you find it ridiculous, that's your problem, Bernard."

Bernard's face darkened, thinking her attitude was not just avoiding responsibility but also challenging the Mitchell family's authority.

"Katherine, I'll give you one last chance to confess. Either you take the fall alone, or your whole family will pay!"

Katherine looked at him calmly, feeling a mix of sarcasm and amusement.

Make her whole family pay?

Did he mean her blood relatives?

If so, Bernard would be the first to go!

If not, it didn't matter; she had no family to speak of.

Katherine replied, "Whatever!"

Her casual response left Bernard shocked and confused.

Didn't she care about her family?

Was there no one she cared about?

Scarlett, leveraging her brother's influence, choked up and questioned, "Katherine, are you saying I handed you the murder weapon to kill Charles?"

Katherine glanced at Scarlett. "You know exactly what I mean, Scarlett."

Scarlett cried out, "I don't understand! How could I know what you're talking about? Katherine, if you don't admit your crime, are you going to accuse me of being an accomplice? I'm Charles's mother; how could I help an outsider harm my child!"

Katherine looked at her disdainfully. "Scarlett, crying louder won't fool everyone! You handed me this chisel, saying you suspected Charles was in this storage room and couldn't open the door, asking me to help. I believed you and advised caution, worried it might provoke whoever wa inside and harm Charles. Then you handed me this chisel for self-defense because you couldn't hold it. Then, you suddenly opened the door you claimed couldn't be opened, and your son fell out, lying here. I never touched him. No one knows what really happened to your son better than you !"

Scarlett looked wronged and furious. "Katherine, don't you feel guilty lying like that? Doesn't your conscience bother you? When did I ever say that to you? Stop making things up!"

Katherine thought, 'Who's the real liar here? Whose conscience is really clear? It's like a thief crying, "Stop thief!"'

Katherine felt dirty just looking at Scarlett.

Scarlett hadn't finished her act, wiping her tears in a heartbroken manner. She turned to the man who had been silent for a long time.

"Alex, I know you've helped me all these years because I once saved your life. I'm not asking for repayment now. Please help us get justice for Charles. He can't just die in vain," Scarlett pleaded.

After she finished, Alex stood up, his demeanor cold and stern, and walked toward Katherine.

Scarlett's red eyes followed him, secretly hoping he'd slap Katherine hard.

Everyone watched, thinking Alex was about to stand up for Scarlett.

Alex did reach out his hand.

His rough hand gently brushed aside a few strands of hair covering Katherine's eyes, his deep voice carrying a hint of reproach. "Didn't I tell you not to wander off alone?"

Katherine frowned slightly. "Alright, I forgot."

He said nothing more, taking off his coat and draping it over her shoulders.

The kitchen window was open for ventilation, and the night wind blowing in could easily cause a cold.

Katherine felt the weight on her shoulders, glancing at the suit jacket draped over her.

At this moment, it wasn't just a suit jacket to keep her warm; it was also a sign of absolute trust and a firm stance on her side no matter what happened.

After a long pause, Katherine looked up at Alex again.

There wasn't a trace of doubt in his eyes.

She hadn't expected Alex to trust her so much, given Scarlett's convincing act and her status as his savior. She wouldn't have blamed him.

Yet, he wasn't swayed by his savior's act. It was touching!

She relaxed, feeling a bit tired as she leaned into his embrace. "Alex, I'm tired."

"Alright, let's go home and get some sleep." Alex comfortingly patted her head, then turned and led her away.

The way things went shocked everyone. Wasn't Alex openly protecting a murderer?

As Alex gently held Katherine and walked towards the kitchen door, Scarlett's face turned extremely ugly, her nails digging into her palms!

Charles was dead, and Alex was unmoved! He still trusted Katherine unwaveringly?

Why!

Why!

Did Katherine cast some spell on Alex?

"Stop! Who said you could leave after killing Charles?" Bernard shouted.

The servants formed a line, blocking their path completely!

Alex stopped, raising an eyebrow. "Do I need anyone's permission to leave?"

Bernard walked over, circling in front of him, his brows furrowed, looking at him with an incomprehensible gaze. "Alex, are you still protecting this evil woman? She's a murderer!"

Alex's expression remained unchanged. "Katherine just explained what happened. She didn't kill Charles. Didn't you hear?"

Bernard was momentarily stunned, then sternly said, "She says she didn't, so she didn't? Murderers in court never confess to their crimes! When did you become so foolish, Alex? Do you really think such a scheming woman would have any genuine feelings for you?"

Alex answered, "It doesn't matter. Whether she's sincere or not, I believe her."

Seeing the other party unmoved, Bernard decided not to hold back anymore. "Your belief doesn't matter because you're not the law!"

He then coldly ordered his men, "Call the police!"

Suddenly, the sound of something breaking came from the corner.

"Who? Who's hiding there?"
