Chapter 239 Take Charles Home!
A ten-year mineral cooperation contract?
Arabia's mineral resources were a hot ticket, both locally and globally. Big companies were lining up for a piece of the action, so the Arabian negotiators were notoriously tough and arrogant.
The Mitchell Group aimed for a five-year deal with Arabia, but the crown prince only agreed to three, with terms to be renegotiated later, even securing a three-year deal had been challenging.
And Katherine had only been there for just an hour, and she managed to secure a ten-year deal?
Bernard was stunned, a flicker of surprise in his eyes. "She really speaks Arabic?"
Billy nodded confidently. "Yeah, and fluently. She even cracked jokes that had the Arabian negotiator laughing! And, Mr. Mitchell, she wants to know when she can start tomorrow."
Bernard squinted thoughtfully, "Have her come in tomorrow morning. If we sign that ten-year contract, she can start right away."
"Got it!" Billy replied.
Even Billy, who had initially doubted Katherine, now had no objections to her joining.
After hanging up, Bernard, usually calm, still looked a bit shocked.
Seeing this, Scarlett felt uneasy. "Bernard, who did you say is starting? You don't mean... you're really hiring Katherine as your secretary, do you?"
Bernard snapped out of it and nodded. "She seems skilled. If she's really talented, she can stay."
Given Katherine's success in securing the deal with Arabia, it was logical for her to oversee the follow-up to ensure smooth execution.
Scarlett hadn't expected Bernard to actually hire Katherine. A sense of unease crept in, though she managed to force a smile. "Bernard, Katherine is smart. She'll be a great help! But, I shouldn't meddle in company matters, but I have to say, Katherine has a bit of a temper. She's not exactly the compliant type you need in a secretary. Think it over, Bernard!"
Bernard patted Scarlett's head affectionately. "I know what I'm doing. Thanks for worrying, Scarlett!"
He knew what his sister was concerned about.
Katherine's presence made Scarlett, who already couldn't win Alex's heart, feel threatened.
For him, hiring Katherine was purely about her talent.
But keeping her close would also make it easier to keep an eye on her for Scarlett, preventing her from getting too close to Alex.
Seeing Bernard wasn't changing his mind, Scarlett kept up her fake smile. "Alright then."
Bernard sat up and took a sip of water. "Scarlett, how's that kid doing?"
Scarlett was caught off guard and felt guilty. "Wh-what kid?"
Bernard pretended to be stern as he asked about the adopted child. "The kid you and Alex adopted from abroad! How long were you planning to keep this from me?"
Scarlett knew she couldn't hide it any longer, and said in a pitiful tone, "Bernard, you knew?"
Bernard snorted, "You've been leaving early and coming back late every day for the past month. How could I not notice? I had Billy check up on you."
Fearing Bernard's reaction, Scarlett tearfully explained, "Bernard, you know my biggest dream has always been to marry the man I love, have lots of babies, and live happily ever after. But I... I can't have children. So, I wanted to adopt because I really want to be a mom."
Seeing Scarlett so upset, Bernard's heart ached. He couldn't blame her.
He sighed, hugged her shoulder, and gently said, "I get it. Bring the child home tomorrow. It's not right to keep him out there, and it's exhausting for you to run back and forth."
Scarlett looked up, surprised. "Bernard? Really? Won't Mom and Dad be mad? I'm scared."
Bernard wiped her tears with a tissue. "Don't be scared. Mom and Dad know about your situation. They just need time to accept it. You were impulsive to make such a big decision on your own, but bring the child home first. I'll handle Mom and Dad."
Scarlett, moved, threw herself into Bernard's arms. "Bernard, I knew you were the best! You'll always be on my side, right?"
Bernard didn't hesitate. "Of course."
Scarlett smiled. "Bernard, you know what? Charles has been growing so fast! I'll buy him some new clothes and dress him up cutely before bringing him home. Mom and Dad will love him!"
Scarlett couldn't stop talking about Charles, smiling and chatting endlessly with Bernard.
But inside, she was annoyed.
A few days ago, she had a friend in the media release a vague news piece suggesting she and Alex were about to get engaged, hoping to pressure Alex and their families.
She also wanted Katherine, wherever she was, to see the news and realize she had no chance with Alex.
But the news had no effect. Alex just had it taken down.
Judging by the situation, Bernard and Alex didn't have a smooth conversation.
Did Alex really not want to marry her?
Just because of Katherine, Alex wasn't as attentive to her as before.
Now, her biggest worry was that Katherine had come back.
Why come back now?
What was Katherine's plan, applying to be Bernard's secretary?
No matter what Katherine's intentions were, once she was at the Mitchell Group, she'd be under Scarlett's control.
Whatever Katherine experienced next at the Mitchell Group would be her own doing.
A hint of malice flashed in Scarlett's seemingly innocent eyes.
Scarlett thought o herself, 'Let's see what happens.'
The next morning, Katherine arrived at the Mitchell Group to start her job.
