Chapter 160 What is Katherine's True Identity?

After leaving the hospital room, Scarlett's eyes scanned the hospital corridor, searching for the man who had just walked out.

In the long hospital corridor, she didn't see Alex. But they had only left a few minutes apart. Where did Alex go?

She saw the door to the stairwell ahead being pushed open, and Leander walking out with a serious expression.

Scarlett immediately walked over to greet Leander.

Leander nodded slightly and called out, "Scarlett."

Scarlett nodded back and asked, "Mr. Nelson, is Alex in there?"

Leander replied truthfully, "Yes, Mr. Melville is inside."

"Then I'll go in and see him," said she.

With that, Scarlett walked over and pushed open the stairwell door.

Leander did not stop her. He glanced back at Scarlett's figure as she walked into the stairwell, a hint of conflict flashing across his usually composed face, and then he quickly walked away.

He had to finish the tasks that Mr. Melville had just assigned.

Scarlett walked into the stairwell and saw Alex standing by the window, smoking. She walked over, coughing twice from the smoke. "Alex..."

Alex slowly exhaled a thin stream of smoke, squinting as he turned his head to look at her. "What's up?"

Scarlett looked worried and said, "Alex, are you mad because Katherine hurt me?"

Alex didn't say anything.

Scarlett sighed and continued, "Because you trusted her, and she betrayed your trust. You must be really upset, right? I can tell, Alex, you're angry."

Alex didn't deny it. After a brief silence, he said to her, "You should be able to leave the hospital today. Go home with Bernard."

Scarlett was taken aback, her eyes showing hurt, like a poor little deer being abandoned.

She shook her head. "Alex, I'm fine. I want to stay here with you."

Alex furrowed his brow slightly. "There are all kinds of germs in the hospital. Your immune system is weak. You don't want to catch something before your injuries are fully healed."

Scarlett's heart was moved, her eyes quickly welling up with tears. "Alex, so you still care about me. I thought you didn't care anymore."

He said, "Alright, go home first. Bernard is waiting for you."

Scarlett was stunned. She turned around and saw that Bernard had indeed pushed open the stairwell door and was looking at them with a serious expression.

She felt a bit helpless and turned back to look at the man with longing. "Alex, after I go home, will you come to see me?"

Alex remained silent, nodding slightly.

Scarlett's pale face turned a bit rosy. She tugged at his sleeve. "Can you walk me downstairs? I want you to see me off."

He was silent for a moment, then stubbed out his cigarette. "Let's go."

Scarlett's eyes filled with a touch of girlish affection. She nodded obediently and followed him out.

She said to Bernard, who was waiting at the stairwell door, "Bernard, let's go home!"

Bernard glanced sideways at his sister, pretending to be angry. "I told you to go home earlier, but you wouldn't listen. Now that Alex told you to go home, you listen right away?"

Scarlett blushed, shyly glancing at the man beside her, then stomped her foot and called out, "Bernard!"

"Alright, let's go," Bernard patted his sister's head, chuckling softly, then gave Alex a cool look. "Alex, thanks for convincing my sister to go home."

"No problem," Alex replied indifferently, his expression calm.

The three of them walked together, with Scarlett in the middle of the two men, drawing envious glances from onlookers.

On their way, they passed by Katherine's hospital room, which was still guarded by police officers.

A man carrying a briefcase was talking to the officers at the door, explaining his purpose.

From a distance, Bernard recognized the man and narrowed his eyes. "Is that David Hall?"

David Hall, a giant in the legal world, founder of Janetrick's top law firm, and currently the head of the legal department at Crescent Group.

David usually handled major economic cases. Why would he personally come for a minor attempted assault case today?

Scarlett also recognized Mr. Hall. She turned her head in disbelief to look at the man beside her, her brow furrowed with sadness. "Alex, do you still trust Katherine? Did you bring Mr. Hall to defend her?"

Alex's pupils contracted, his expression unreadable, and his deep voice devoid of warmth. "I didn't bring him."

What?

Scarlett was stunned, her eyes filled with surprise. Wasn't Mr. Hall brought by Alex?

Then how did Katherine manage to get Mr. Hall?

It was nearly impossible for an ordinary person to get Mr. Hall to personally take on a case, especially such a minor one.

Bernard cast a sarcastic glance at Alex, not believing that Katherine could have brought David on her own.

When David successfully negotiated with the officers and was about to enter the hospital room, he suddenly saw two familiar faces walking down the corridor. He stopped, turned, and nodded with a smile. "Mr. Melville, Mr. Mitchell, long time no see."

Alex nodded in return.

Bernard also smiled and nodded.

David politely added, "Sorry, I have work to attend to. Excuse me."

With that, David pushed the door open and entered Katherine's room.

Only then did Bernard believe that Mr. Hall might not have been brought by Alex. If Alex had hired him, David would have at least come over to chat for a bit out of professional courtesy, rather than maintaining such a distant and formal demeanor.

But how could Katherine have contacted David and convinced him to come?

The three people, who had come together, stopped and watched, not moving forward. They seemed to be in sync, but each had their own thoughts, all wanting to know something.

About ten minutes later, David came out of the room.

David, looking serious yet polite, said to the officers guarding the door, "My client Katherine has authorized me to represent her in this case fully. Sir, I need to go to the police station to meet the assailant who attacked Scarlett and understand the case details. Could someone accompany me?"

Before the officer could respond, Bernard spoke up from a distance, "Mr. Hall, I also need to go to the station to provide evidence and make a statement. Shall we go together?"

Bernard walked up gracefully, with a polite smile.

David smiled professionally and replied, "Mr. Mitchell, I am sorry, but as Katherine's attorney, it's inappropriate for me to have private contact with the victim or their family. I hope you understand."

Bernard smiled and said, "Of course, I understand."

Bernard was just curious and wanted to chat with Mr. Hall to understand how Katherine managed to get him involved.

After all, the Mitchell Group had previously tried to hire Mr. Hall for a case, offering a substantial fee, but failed.

Scarlett watched Bernard and David talk, then glanced at Katherine's room door, her brow furrowed and her face showing caution.

A girl like Katherine, with no roots or connections in Janetrick, could she have any connections besides Alex?

She then instinctively turned to look at the man beside her.

Alex's dark eyes were slightly narrowed, his expression unreadable, lost in thought.
