Chapter 895 An Old Acquaintance

Katherine took a sip of her coffee and said, "Then why?"

Nora replied, "Actually, I asked you here today to introduce someone to you."

Katherine raised an eyebrow curiously, "Who?"

Nora turned her head, intending to call Claire over from a distance to have an open conversation, but she found that the seat was already empty!

Where did she go?

Linda was also puzzled, "Mom, where's Ms. Ayers?"

Nora looked around but didn't see Claire.

Katherine found their behavior odd, cleared her throat, and put down her coffee cup. "Ma'am, who exactly are you trying to introduce to me?"

Nora snapped back to reality, looking very embarrassed. "The person I wanted to introduce is an old acquaintance of yours, but she had something come up and couldn't make it today. Katherine, let's reschedule for another time, and I'll bring her to meet you."

An old acquaintance? Katherine furrowed her brow. What old acquaintance would Linda and Nora need to introduce to her?

They both seemed a bit strange.

After a moment of silence, Katherine asked again, "Besides that, is there anything else you wanted to discuss with me, ma'am?"

Nora sighed, looking at Katherine with concern. "Katherine, what are your plans moving forward?"

Katherine asked back, "Which plans are you referring to, ma'am?"

Nora said, "Are you planning to take Trevor away from Sophia?"

The wariness in Katherine's eyes hadn't faded. Hearing this question, her brow furrowed even more. "Ma'am, if you asked me out to get information for Brent and Sophia, you can forget it! I'm not a fool; why would I reveal my plans to my adversaries?"

Nora's face stiffened, and she was at a loss for words. "I'm not."

She was genuinely worried about Katherine's current situation, partly because Katherine had once saved her life, and partly because she was the long-lost daughter of her best friend, Claire!

Nora knew Brent's temper well and was worried that he might harm Katherine to protect Sophia.

Linda defended her mother, "Katherine, you really misunderstood! My mom isn't trying to get information from you. We don't side with Sophia; we both think what she's doing is wrong! And right now, my mom is in the middle of a divorce with my dad! We're not on his side either!"

Katherine looked at Linda's serious expression, which didn't seem like a lie. Adults might lie for their own purposes, and children might too, but children often couldn't maintain their composure as well as adults.

Linda's face was full of sincerity and determination.

After staring at Linda for a while, Katherine turned her gaze to Nora. "Ma'am, are you divorcing Brent?"

Nora nodded with a gloomy expression. "Yes, we're currently separated."

Katherine was genuinely curious. "Why? I heard that you two have always had a good relationship."

Nora looked down at the table, appearing sad and powerless. "Our relationship was indeed good, but I don't want to be an accomplice anymore! He indulges Sophia's misdeeds without any principles. I can't stop it, and I've seen enough. I don't want to see it anymore!"

Katherine stared at Nora for a long time before saying, "If what you're saying is true, then I misunderstood you earlier."

Nora gave a bitter smile. "Katherine, I understand why you're cautious around me. I just wanted to warn you that Sophia is not a good person. She will do anything to keep Trevor by her side, and Brent will be manipulated by her pitiful act. You must be careful."

Katherine began to somewhat believe in Nora's good intentions and nodded. "Thank you for the warning. I'll be careful. Ma'am, is there anything else you need to say? If not, I should get back to the office; I have work to do."

As she spoke, Katherine raised her arm to check the time on her watch.

Seeing this, Nora didn't want to delay her work any further, but she instinctively glanced around the room again.

Still no sign of Claire.

She sighed helplessly. "Alright, Katherine, if you have work to do, go ahead. Next time, when you have time, I'll bring that old acquaintance to meet you."

Mentioning the old acquaintance again, Katherine squinted her eyes, curious but not very interested. She nodded slightly. "Alright, I'll be going then."

With that, she stood up, gave a polite smile, and turned to leave.

Linda waved reluctantly. "Katherine, goodbye!"

Without turning her head, Katherine raised her arm and waved back, then pushed open the door of the coffee shop and left.

Watching Katherine walk towards the Melville Group building across the street, Linda said in frustration, "Mom, wasn't it a waste to get Katherine here? We didn't tell her any useful information, and we don't even know where Ms. Ayers went!"

Nora, realizing this, also felt helpless and rubbed her forehead in frustration. "Let's go, Linda. Let's check the restroom for Claire."

She led Linda to the restroom.

The restroom was quiet, and there was no one at the sinks, but several stall doors were closed.

Nora tried calling out, "Come out! She's already gone!"

Linda blinked her big eyes, staring at the restroom stalls in surprise.

Sure enough, shortly after Nora spoke, one of the stall doors opened.

Claire walked out with a forlorn expression, her eyes red and teary.

Linda stepped forward and asked, "Ms. Ayers, what's going on? Weren't you supposed to meet Katherine? Why did you hide in here?"

Claire's voice was hoarse. "I didn't know how to face her. I feel guilty and ashamed."

Linda's big eyes sparkled. "Ms. Ayers, does this mean you're sure Katherine is your long-lost daughter?"

Claire choked up, covering her mouth to keep from crying in front of Linda, and nodded. "It's her. I don't need to ask her anything; I can tell at a glance! She's my daughter, Laura."

Linda was delighted. "That's great!"

Nora patted Claire on the shoulder to comfort her. "Isn't it good that it's her? Laura is still alive; you should be happy!"

Claire closed her eyes, swallowing her bitter tears. "I'm really happy that she's alive and well, but I also feel guilty. Why didn't I investigate properly back then and just believe what others said?"
