Chapter 355 Scarlett is on the Brink of Victory

A servant yanked a maid out from behind the fridge and threw her in front of Bernard.

"Why were you hiding back there?" he demanded.

The maid, panicked, stammered, "Mr. Mitchell, I didn't do anything."

Bernard's cold eyes bore into her.

The servant pressed, "If you did nothing, why were you hiding?"

Terrified, the maid whispered, "I was afraid."

The servant was about to yell again, but Bernard raised his hand to stop him. He stepped forward and asked gently, "What are you afraid of?"

The maid, shaking, replied, "I saw everything."

Bernard squinted. "What did you see? Don't be afraid. Tell me."

Blushing, she looked at Bernard. "I saw Katherine kill Charles. She stabbed him with a chisel and then threatened Ms. Mitchell to stay away from Mr. Melville or she'd be next. I wanted to help, but I was too scared and hid. Then you came, just in time."

Bernard's eyes filled with cold anger as he glared at Katherine, waiting for her reaction. She just frowned, looking annoyed.

Disappointed, Bernard turned to Alex. "Do you still believe her now?"

Alex, calm, held the girl's shoulder. "This maid is from your family. Her testimony isn't reliable."

Bernard sneered. "You think she'd lie for no reason?"

Alex shrugged. "People can be unpredictable."

Bernard laughed mockingly. "If you know that, you should be wary of Katherine. Don't let her deceive you."

Alex's eyes darkened. "You don't need to worry about that."

Bernard glared at Katherine. "Anything to say?"

Katherine remained calm. "Nothing. Call the police."

The maid who testified against Katherine was the same one who had just brought her coffee in the living room. Katherine had followed her into the kitchen, but then the maid vanished. It seemed odd at first, but now it was clear: the maid had hidden behind the fridge, ready to give false testimony. She was part of Scarlett's trap.

Katherine had no way to defend herself. With witnesses and evidence against her, she could only rely on the police to uncover the truth.

When the police and forensic experts arrived, they'd determine the time and cause of death, revealing the real culprit. But Scarlett, confident in her setup, was already jealous of Alex's unwavering trust in Katherine.

Scarlett, frustrated in tears, hugged Charles and said, "Bernard, if Katherine won't admit it, let's call the police. We can't let Charles die unjustly!"

Bernard, showing no mercy, signaled his men to call the police.

Katherine yawned. "Alex, they've called the police. We should wait and cooperate."

Alex looked at her. "Didn't you say you were sleepy?"

Katherine shrugged. "Even if I'm sleepy, I have to cooperate. I want to be a law-abiding citizen."

Alex patted her head, feeling guilty for bringing her here and causing her trouble.

After calling the police, Katherine noticed a fleeting, provocative smile on Scarlett's face. Scarlett, holding her deceased son, could still smile. Only Katherine saw it; no one else noticed Scarlett's true nature.

Seeing Scarlett's confident smile, Katherine's heart sank. She realized Scarlett had planned everything meticulously, likely even involving the forensic experts and police.

Katherine had underestimated Scarlett, thinking she had some maternal instinct left. Now, she knew hoping for an unbiased investigation was futile.

While worrying, Katherine suddenly saw Charles's little finger move slightly. It wasn't an illusion—could he still be alive?

Her eyes widened as she quickly walked over and knelt down to check his pulse.
